Report: Boston Celtics vet Al Horford to sign with Golden State Warriors 'eventually'

USA Today06-07-2025
The Boston Celtics may need to get used to a future without veteran forward Al Horford sooner than they would likely want to, according to recent reporting from the Stein Line reporter Jake Fischer. Per multiple reports, Horford has been mulling a number of possible paths as an unrestricted free agent.
Those paths include of course returning to the Celtics, but could also see the University of Florida alum retire from the sport as a player, or join the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, or Golden State Warriors. That last team in particular has been the belle of the ball for Horford's camp if the rumbles Stein has been hearing are correct (keep in mind, much negotiation through the media takes place at this point in the league calendar).
"All signs, for the record, continue to point to Al Horford landing with Golden State … eventually," wrote Fischer on Sunday morning.
For now, fans of Horford and the Celtics can only wait for further details about the Dominican big man's future with the team.

How does Payton Pritchard feel about the Celtics' busy offseason?

Boston Celtics point guard Payton Pritchard is in a stable place at the moment. He's on a relatively cheap contract and cemented how valuable he is to the C's after winning Sixth Man of the Year last season. And while the 27-year-old stayed put this offseason, that wasn't the case for many of his teammates. Celtics starters Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis were traded away this summer, while backup center Luke Kornet walked in free agency. Veteran big man Al Horford is also expected to leave the C's in the coming weeks, casting plenty of uncertainty around Pritchard and company for the 2025-26 season. In spite of this, the sixth-year Celtic didn't sound too worried during a conversation with NBC Sports Boston's Chris Forsberg. He discussed the recent roster changes, a new NBA rule that he helped create, and more on the Celtics Talk Podcast. Why Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe is watching highlights from Celtics' Derrick White

The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers have one of the oldest rivalries in the NBA, but that doesn't mean they can't learn from each other. In fact, Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe is already studying the Celtics, viewing highlights of guard Derrick White to see how he can thrive as a two way player. The Big 12 Freshman of the Year is the same position as White and nearly the same height, generating some easy comparisons. Edgecombe joined Sixers teammate Paul George on the "Podcast P" show and discussed how White, ex-Celtic Jrue Holiday, and 2025 NBA champion Lu Dort are influencing his defensive game. "I watch defensive clips," he said. "I'm watching Jrue Holiday, Derrick Dort. I'm watching them. Just trying to learn both ends of the floor. They're the main people I watch." It's no secret that the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft has two-way potential. Edgecombe's athleticism helps him on both sides of the floor, as he averaged 15 points per game during his freshman year while recording 68 steals, the most of any frosh in the history of Baylor basketball. White, who was the second-to-last pick of the first round back in 2017, wasn't as highly regarded as Edgecombe in college. However, the former D-II hooper developed into a two-way stud and helped the Celtics win it all in 2024. The injured 2025-26 Celtics are far from that title team at the moment, leaving the Sixers with the more palpable championship aspirations. But, Philadelphia isn't completely healthy either due to center Joel Embiid's lurking knee issues and Paul George's summer surgery. As a result, White and Edgecombe will be asked to step up for their respective squads next season. And since the Celtics and Sixers both inhabit the Atlantic Division, White and Edgecombe are destined for an on-court battle in the coming months.
