Iraq unearths six mass graves in al-Anbar
The graves, located in the Al-Jam'iyah neighborhood of al-Saqlawiyah, contained dozens of victims killed under Saddam Hussein's regime, as well as during al-Qaeda and ISIS control in the area, the foundation stated, adding that DNA tests will be conducted using samples from families of the missing to confirm identities.
'Once verified, remains will be returned to relatives for burial.'
The foundation also confirmed that legal documents, including forensic reports and seizure records, will be submitted to Iraqi courts to trigger official investigations.
According to the Martyrs Foundation and UN reports, Iraq has identified more than 200 mass grave sites, many from the Baath era. These include graves from the 1988 Anfal campaign against Kurds, the 1991 Shaaban uprising, and crackdowns on political opponents in the 1980s.
After 2003, new waves of violence emerged, particularly by extremist groups such as al-Qaeda and ISIS. Among the most notorious incidents were the 2014 massacre of Yazidis in Sinjar and the execution of more than 1,700 Iraqi cadets at Camp Speicher.

'Both lawsuits were rejected by the Federal Supreme Court on the grounds that the issue is not within the jurisdiction of the court,' Omar Gulpi, one of the plaintiffs and a member of the opposition Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal), told Rudaw on Monday. His lawsuit was filed with the federal court against the Kurdistan parliament, calling for the annulment of the 2024 regional election results over its failure to convene. A similar lawsuit was filed by the head of the New Generation Movement's (NGM) bloc in the Iraqi parliament, Srwa Abdulwahid, and two other members of the party, calling for the dissolution of the Kurdish legislature. The NGM is the strongest opposition party in the Kurdistan Region. Komal leader Ali Bapir in June criticized the current Kurdish parliament as lacking legitimacy due to alleged electoral fraud. Despite this, he told Rudaw that convening it to form a new government would still serve the public interest. The Kurdistan Region held delayed parliamentary elections in October 2024, two years after the original date. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) won 39 out of 100 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) with 23. As no party achieved a majority, a governing coalition is required, as has been customary. Amid the impasse, lawmakers in the Kurdish parliament - who are seemingly awaiting the outcome of the government formation talks between the KDP and the PUK - have convened only once in December, without electing a speaker or deputies. Lambert was part of a delegation which included the outgoing commander of the coalition, Kevin Leahy, and Commander of US Central Command, Michael Kurilla. During the meeting, they discussed the cooperation between Iraq and the coalition, its development over time, and preparations to transition to bilateral security partnerships with individual coalition member states, according to a statement from Sudani's office. Sudani 'stressed the importance of maintaining stability, avoiding triggers that could escalate conflicts, and upholding the sovereignty of states in accordance with UN charters, international resolutions, dialogue, and mutual understanding. He emphasized the need to activate diplomatic efforts and cooperation to reinforce security and stability in the region,' the statement added. The US-led coalition was formed in 2014 after Iraq formally requested international assistance to counter ISIS's rapid territorial gains in Iraq and Syria. In September 2024, Iraq and the United States announced a joint agreement to end the coalition's mission in Iraq by September 2025. Baghdad has repeatedly stressed that Iraq's current security environment is vastly improved and that Iraqi forces are capable of maintaining internal stability.

Baghdad provincial council votes to retire governor, he calls decision illegal
Baghdad ( – The Baghdad Provincial Council voted during its latest session on Sunday (July 20, 2025) to stop the powers of Baghdad Governor, Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi, and refer him to retirement. This decision is part of a series of resolutions adopted by the council and officially documented with the signatures of its members, according to a source within the council. The source also indicated that during the same session, the council discussed the issue of audio leaks with a 'spyware nature' and voted to hold all those involved or negligent accountable. In response, Baghdad Governor Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi issued a clarification regarding the decision to refer him to retirement and the audio leaks. Al-Alawi stated that the Baghdad Provincial Council's decision to retire him was made during an extraordinary session, noting that this matter was not on the agenda nor was it voted on for inclusion. He emphasized that the council's internal regulations do not permit discussing any topics outside the agenda during extraordinary sessions, rendering the decision against him lacking formal and legal legitimacy. Al-Alawi highlighted that since assuming responsibility for Baghdad Governorate, he has faced repeated attempts to remove him through retirement, totaling ten attempts so far, all under the pretext of reaching the legal age. He clarified that he was elected Governor of Baghdad by a unanimous vote of the current 52 members of the Provincial Council in a session held in January 2024, at which point he was already retired.
