Tony Gilroy on Giving ‘Andor' a ‘Hopeful' End, Bringing Back K-2SO, and Episode 10's Revealing Backstory
While on this week's episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Gilroy talked about fighting against the need to incorporate one final big decision or turning point in wrapping up the series heading into 'Rogue One.'

'Episode 12 is really its own thing where we didn't put a lot of pressure to jack anything up,' said Gilroy on the podcast. 'This is kind of a 'deliver the pizza' episode, and the pizza is emotional, and everybody settled into it, and we took the pressure off ourselves.'
Gilroy specifically wanted to go out on a hopeful note. 'Andor' Season 2 was about the personal sacrifices and impossible choices characters faced in taking on the cause of the nascent rebellion, and the series creator felt as if 'Andor' had earned the right to end with a measured note of optimism.
'We're really putting the audience through some amazingly difficult journeys [of] what time does to people that hopefully you care about, and [what] time, under these really extreme circumstances and these extreme adventures that they're on, does to them,' said Gilroy. 'So there's a lot of attrition at the end. There's a lot of sadness at the end. But really, in the end, this is the beginning of 'A New Hope.' What's going to come out of this is the phoenix of the Rebellion.'
The last three-episode cycle 'Andor' also saw K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk) back into the fold, returning to the prominent supporting role that the modified KX-series security droid plays in 'Rogue One.' It's a move Gilroy purposefully delayed and left to the series end. As Gilroy explained on the podcast, his initial involvement with 'Andor' was as a friend to the franchise, giving notes to Lucasfilm on its initial plans for a 'Rogue One' prequel series. In addition to his advice to take a 'back-to-the-studs' approach to Cassian Andor's (Diego Luna) arc, which would become the basis of his own series, he highly recommended they abandon their ambitious plans for K-2SO.
'I was saying, I don't think you can have K-2 all the way through this show, which they kept wanting to try to do because that was the, 'Let's have a Butch and Sundance' show,' said Gilroy of the initial plans to have Cassian and the droid go on 40-episodes worth of missions together — a proposal that reminded the 'Rogue One' writer of his own story struggles with K-2. 'He's the worst piece of luggage in the world. He's not a spy, you can't take him undercover, he's seven feet tall. KX units are so inhibiting. If you watch 'Rogue' with that in mind, how many times is he is not allowed to get out of the ship, or 'I have to wait here and do something.''
In a series which, at its core, is about supplying an emotional understanding of what brings characters of all stripes to fight a fascist Empire, Episode 10 is arguably the holy grail of 'Why We Fight' Rebellion backstories: Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) and Kleya (Elizabeth Dulau). Gilroy said very early on he knew he would explore Luthen's backstory, and was saving it for a key storyline of the stealthy underground leader for near the end of 'Andor.'
'I had a variety of backstories that Stellan and I spoke about early in the first season,' said Gilory. 'The one thing he didn't want was he didn't want revenge. He said, 'I don't want it to be a revenge story. I see that in some of the other characters, and I think that's the one I don't want.'
The ultimate Episode 210 storyline, and the incorporation of Kleya, as an almost adopted daughter, into Luthen's backstory, was motivated and inspired by the talents of Dulau. Gilroy and Skarsgård had both been impressed by the previously unknown actress's talents, and wanted to give her and the character the opportunity to spread their wings before saying goodbye.
'Elizabeth Dulau, who plays Kleya, was such an incredible surprise. It's her first job. She came right out of RADA, and we had a couple of actresses who were signed up for that part, who got offered other things along the way, and we let them go. And suddenly we have this young actress [who we don't really know,' said Gilroy. '[Her] audition's very good, and her scenes are very good, but how good is she? And oh my God, you start to realize what someone can do. She's a Meryl Streep. I mean, she's just astonishing.'

Lollapalooza 2025: What we saw — and heard — at the 4-day music festival at Grant Park
Lollapalooza 2025 is now over at Grant Park. This year's festival showcased an impressive blend of breakthrough acts and established favorites, with headliners like Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter and Tyler, the Creator. It was an exciting year for artists who've found their creative stride, from Grammy-nominated R&B powerhouse Durand Bernarr to genre-defying sensation Amaarae to mega breakout rapper Doechii, a hip hop superstar in the making. Here's what we saw — and heard. Day 4 opened in Grant Park under sunny skies, lower air quality alerts and a final lineup of music across the festival's seven main stages. Headliners were Sabrina Carpenter, making a day-closing stand for Lolla's strong female lineup on the T-Mobile stage, and New York rapper A$AP Rocky on the Bud Light. It's been nearly 10 years since A$AP Rocky last played Lollapalooza. Other notable artists for the day included Finneas, the singer first famous in 2016 for teaming with sister Billie Eilish; Dominic Fike; a second Lolla for the Latin and jazz-infused indie band The Marías; and two concerts by Rebecca Black, the first a DJ set on the Perry's stage. Headliners for Lollapalooza Day 3 were more of a trio, with Australian electronic group Rüfüs Du Sol closing the day on the T-Mobile stage, K-pop girl group TWICE on the Bud Light and singer commanding his own strong following for his Saturday-capping set on the smaller Grove stage. Other artists Saturday included indie-pop singer Clairo, Young Miko, Two Friends, Marina, Doechii and JPEGMAFIA. The Chicago Youth Symphony closed the Tito's Handmade Vodka stage Saturday evening. Plus there was the surprise addition of Chance the Rapper with a 15-minute set on the Perry's stage at 5:50 p.m. Chance has a new album, 'Star Line,' due out on Aug. 15. TWICE, the first-ever K-pop girl group to anchor the festival, drew K-pop fans sporting trademark accessories inspired by their favorite idols — bright colors, fur armwarmers, hair tinsel and baseball card-sized photos of their TWICE favorites. 'You can definitely tell when someone's here for a certain singer,' said Bridget Sikorski, 20. Read more here. Friday was Olivia Rodrigo day at Lollapalooza as the festival opened for Day 2 in Chicago's lakefront Grant Park. Rodrigo is the T-Mobile mainstage headliner to close out the night, on the opposite end from metal band Korn on the Bud Light stage. There was a sea of Rodrigo's signature purple at the T-Mobile by noon on Friday. Some of her most dedicated fans, many wearing purple cowboy hats, made it a point to line up early to get the best view. Read more here. Lollapalooza opened Thursday in Grant Park for its annual four days of crowds and music, with a lineup through Sunday heavy on female artists — Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter are both end-of-day headliners, with Gracie Abrams and Clairo also among the early crowd favorites. Official headliners for Day 1 were Tyler, the Creator and Luke Combs, who closed out the night on the T-Mobile and Bud Light stages, respectively. Combs made Lollapalooza history as the Chicago festival's first-ever country music festival closer. At the main gates at Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive, concertgoers got up with the sun to be first in the entrance chutes before the festival opened at 11 a.m. Siblings Jacob Fuentes and Sofia Pogue traveled from Texas; this was the first concert ever for Sofia, 13, they said. Tyler, the Creator is her favorite artist. 'I like a lot of music but I feel like I like (Tyler's) the most,' she said. Read more here. Lollapalooza can be seen as a safe haven — a place where music lovers go to catch all their favorite artists in one place. But along with that excitement comes crowds that can swell to outsized numbers for more popular artists, at a time when crowd safety has taken on a new sense of importance. Some of that awareness this summer is due to the documentary 'Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy,' which was released on Netflix in June and quickly became popular. The documentary details the events leading up to the crowd crush that killed 10 people at rapper Travis Scott's Astroworld music festival in Houston in November 2021. Read more here. For the second year in a row, Lollapalooza will power its largest stage with a hybrid battery system, marking a growing trend of big-name music festivals transitioning away from diesel-based generators. When the Chicago staple introduced its hybrid battery-powered stage in 2024, it became the first major U.S. festival to power its main stage with a battery system, which supplements the stage's generators with energy stored from the electric grid. This system reduced the stage's fuel consumption by 67%, and avoided 26 metric tons of carbon emissions, according to data from festival organizers. Liam Neeson Rips Into His STAR WARS Death Scene: 'Oh, Please. Hardly a Master Jedi' — GeekTyrant
Liam Neeson didn't hold back when recnetly critiquing his own Star Wars legacy. While promoting his upcoming comedy The Naked Gun , Neeson sat down with GQ to reflect on some of his most iconic roles, and when it came time to talk about Star Wars: The Phantom Menace , the actor criticized how his Jedi Master went out. During the video, Neeson looked back on playing Qui-Gon Jinn, and called out what he felt was a lackluster demise at the hands of Darth Maul. Neeson said: 'I'm supposed to be a master Jedi, you know. My character fell for that 'Oh! I'm going for your face! No I'm not. I'm going for your stomach.' [makes death noises] 'Oh, you got me!' Like, oh please. Hardly a master Jedi. But still, [making the film] was great.' To be fair, Qui-Gon's death has always sparked debate among fans. While Maul was undeniably a fearsome and highly trained Sith apprentice, Neeson makes a valid point. A Jedi Master who had easily dispatched battle droids throughout the film probably shouldn't have gone down so quickly. Especially when he was supposed to be one of the Order's most powerful and wise warriors, and crucially, the one meant to guide Anakin Skywalker's future. After The Phantom Menace , Neeson did return to the galaxy far, far away for a brief cameo as Qui-Gon's Force ghost in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi , and also lent his voice to the animated series Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi . His son, Micheál Richardson, even voiced a younger version of Qui-Gon in the show. But as far as doing anything more in the Star Wars universe, Neeson isn't feeling it. 'It's diluting it to me, and it's taken away the mystery and magic in a weird way.' He makes it pretty clear he's not eager to return again. The number of spinoffs and prequels might be chipping away at the specialness that made Star Wars so beloved in the first place. Sure, Maul was a beast in combat, trained by none other than Darth Sidious himself, and Qui-Gon had just come off an exhausting lightsaber duel earlier in the movie. But it still feels like his character deserved more of a legendary send-off. Unlike Obi-Wan's noble sacrifice in A New Hope , Qui-Gon was actively trying to survive and fulfill his purpose. He wasn't giving up — he was taken out. Maybe Neeson's criticism isn't just about his character's death being too easy, but more about how it undermined Qui-Gon's importance and capability. For a Jedi Master who was meant to be pivotal in Anakin's journey, getting stabbed after a simple feint feels like a weak exit. What do you think?
