Naseeruddin Shah is considered one of the most versatile and talented actors that Indian cinema has ever produced. In 2024, the actor introduced his autobiography titled 'And Then One Day' and revealed several interesting anecdotes from his personal and professional life. He also opened up about an incident where he was stabbed by an actor friend Jaspal and Om Puri then interfered to rescue him.
During the shooting of his 1977 film Bhoomika, Naseeruddin and Om had gone to have a dinner at a restaurant. Just then, his friend Jaspal, with whom the actor shared a strained relationship arrived at the place.
Naseeruddin Shah shared, 'We ignored each other but, eyes fixed on me, he passed to sit on another table behind me, so I thought. After a while, I was reminded of his presence by what felt like a short sharp punch in the middle of my back. I started to rise, wearily preparing myself for another free-for-all. Before I could move, Om with a strangled cry lunged at something behind me. I turned to see Jaspal holding a small knife, its point dripping blood, his hand raised to strike again, and Om and two others grappling to subdue him.'
The senior actor than narrated further, 'Om returned to inform me that Jaspal had been taken to the kitchen and was being given the treatment. He wanted to take me to a doctor but was thwarted by the restaurant staff refusing to let us move till the police arrived. When the ambulance came, Om made the cardinal error of climbing in as well without permission and managed to rile the boss-man, thereby asking the cops to be gentle with me. He was ordered to get off and after considerable pleading with the goon in charge was allowed to stay. Neither of us had an idea where we were headed but I prayed it was not the police station.'
Naseeruddin Shah was then rushed to the Cooper hospital and later to Jaslok hospital as he was bleeding excessively from his injury. 'The bleeding had not seized, the pain was getting intense and these cops obviously had not quite understood the situation. After a few cursory questions to us, and some garbled transmissions over the radio in Marathi, we arrived at Cooper Hospital in Juhu,' he wrote.
The actor also mentioned in his autobiography that Jaspal, after the incident, had arrived to meet him at his home. Rather than apologising, he said that whatever happened wasn't 'personal.'

She further revealed that the veteran filmmaker was undergoing treatment at Guru Nanak Hospital under Dr Manish Shetty. He had also been admitted to Jaslok Hospital earlier. Barot was born and raised in Tanzania. After working at a bank, he decided to move to India and, under the mentorship of Manoj Kumar, joined the film industry. Chandra not only gave Indian cinema the cult classic Don but also worked as an assistant director on films like Purab Aur Pashchim, Yaadgaar, Shor, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. Marking a major turning point, Barot and his associates decided to produce Don, bringing on board acclaimed writers Salim–Javed, who provided a script that had been rejected by leading filmmakers like Dev Anand, Dharmendra, and Jeetendra. After Don, Barot directed the Bengali film Aashrita (1989) and Pyar Bhara Dil (1991), but many of his subsequent projects, including Boss and Neil Ko Pakadna… Impossible, remained unfinished or unreleased. Meanwhile, his Don franchise became so popular that it developed its own universe. Shah Rukh Khan starred in the 2006 film of the same title but with a different storyline—an ode to Chandra's work. Later, Shah Rukh made a prequel to his Don, and now Farhan Akhtar is directing the third part in the franchise with Ranveer Singh playing the hero and Kriti Sanon starring as the female lead. At the time of his passing, Chandra Barot had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for several years and was undergoing treatment in Mumbai. Salman Khan will star in "Battle of Galwan," directed by Apoorva Lakhia, about the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Filming starts in August in Mumbai, then Ladakh. After the release of Sikandar, Salman Khan is gearing up for his next major project titled Battle of Galwan. The war drama, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, will depict the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops which was one of the most intense military confrontations in recent years. According to a new report now, the filming is expected to begin in early August. Sources close to the production revealed to Mid-Day that the shoot will start in Mumbai before moving to Ladakh. A large set is currently being constructed at Mehboob Studio, which is expected to be ready by the end of July. 'The Mehboob Studio schedule is crucial as [the team] has to shoot some of the early character-building moments there before the team heads to Ladakh for the high-octane action. The art and production design team has been working round the clock to recreate the textures inside the studio. It's a detailed set that will add authenticity to the story," a source shared, confirming that Salman will be present from the first day of shoot. The next leg of filming will shift to Ladakh, where the team is preparing for more physically demanding sequences. 'Salman has been in prep mode for the role since May," another insider told the publication. The Ladakh schedule reportedly involves night shoots, combat training, and full-scale battle sequences. Speaking earlier about his preparation for the role, Salman admitted it has been tough on his body. 'It's physically intense. With each passing year, month, and day, it becomes more challenging. I have to invest a lot more time now. Earlier, I could get into shape in just a week or two, but this time I'm running, kicking, punching — doing it all," he said.
