MYSURU: An annual award has been instituted in the name of the Dasara elephant Arjuna, who was martyred during a wild elephant capture operation near Yasaluru, Hassan. The first award will be presented to a mahout, an elephant handler, and a Kavadi, an assistant elephant handler, during Gajapayana at Nagarahole Tiger Forest on August 4.
Forest minister Eshwar B. Khandre will present the award to Bhima elephant's mahout, Gunda, and Kavadi Nanjundaswamy, who successfully participated in elephant and wildlife capture operations in places like Hassan, Sakleshpur, and Kodagu, informed Eshwar Khandre.
Khandre informed that HD Kote MLA Anil Kumar C suggested establishing an annual award in Arjuna's name. Honouring this suggestion, it has been decided to present the "Arjuna Elephant" award during the annual Gajapayana, a traditional journey of tamed elephants to Mysuru city from the woods.
The award will be presented regularly in recognition of the work of mahouts and Kavadis who actively participate in operations to prevent human-wildlife conflict, capture wild animals, successfully conduct these operations, and excel in training and caring for captured elephants.
Arjuna, who was captured during the Khedda operation in Kakanakote in 1968, participated in the Dasara celebrations 22 times and carried the 750 kg golden howdah 8 times. He won the appreciation of the nation for performing a highly demanding job elegantly. The award has been established to ensure Arjuna's name remains eternal, as he sacrificed his life to save forest staff.
The Dasara elephant selection committee selected the names of the duo for the first Arjuna Award.

Dasara: Elephants and staff insured for ₹2 crore

The elephants for Mysuru Dasara-2025, their mahouts, and kavadis have been insured for a sum of ₹2 crore. The Forest Department officials and the staff, who are associated with the management and training of elephants, are also covered under the insurance, in addition to all 14 elephants that are going to be part of the Dasara festivities, which will commence in September. In total, 43 have been given the insurance cover. Confirming this to The Hindu, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Prabhu Gowda said, 'A premium of ₹67,000 has been paid towards the insurance cover, which has been given by The New India Assurance Company Limited. The insurance policy provides coverage for damages to public as well as private properties.' Mr. Gowda said all nine elephants led by Abhimanyu arrived in the city on Monday around 6 p.m., and are camping at the Aranya Bhavan here. Earlier in the day, the Gajapayana of the elephants was held at Veeranahosahalli, and the jumbos were transported in trucks to Mysuru after a grand event.

‘Gajapayana' of Mysuru Dasara elephants flagged off

'Gajapayana', the traditional but symbolic march of the elephants from their forest camps to the city of palaces, was flagged off at Veeranahosahalli near the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve on Monday. After the traditional rituals and special worship of the jumbos, which were held between 12.34 p.m. and 12.59 p.m., the first batch of the caparisoned elephants led by tusker Abhimanyu began their journey to Mysuru. With 'Gajapayana', the countdown to the famous Dasara festivities has begun, setting the stage for the annual event witnessed by lakhs of people. This year's festivities are scheduled in the month of September. Of the 14 elephants selected to participate in the festivities, the first batch of nine elephants were ceremoniously flagged off, after the rituals conducted by a group of priests. Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment Eshwar Khandre, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture K. Venkatesh, G.D. Harish Gowda, Tanveer Sait, Ravishankar, MLAs, and senior officials from the Forest Department and elected representatives from the district took part in the grand 'Gajayapana'. A large number of people, including local residents, tribals, and some tourists, watched the colourful proceedings. The event came alive by vibrant cultural performances that added colour and charm. Abhimanyu, who led the first batch of elephants, will carry the 750-kg golden howdah on the day of Vijayadashami procession. Other elephants include, Dhananjaya, Bheema, Kanjan, Ekalayva, Prashanth, Mahendra, Kaveri, and Balle Lakshmi. The second batch of five elephants from other camps will join Abhimanyu's team later this month. After marching for a distance, the elephants were transported in trucks to Mysuru. On reaching Mysuru, the elephants will be camping at the Aranya Bhavan for a couple of days, before their traditional welcome into the Mysore palace on August 7. The district administration and the Mysuru Palace Board have made elaborate arrangements for the stay of elephants, mahouts, and their family members on the palace premises. Enclosures have been built for the jumbos and temporary shelters have been established for the mahouts. A dedicated team of forest officials headed by the Deputy Conservator of Forests will be in charge of the elephants. While veterinarians will oversee the health of the elephants, forest personnel will look after their needs until the festivities get over. Special diet will be provided to the elephants. Speaking after flagging off the event, Mr. Khandre emphasised the responsibility of the people in wildlife conservation. 'It is everybody's responsibility to protect wildlife even as we enjoy watching them in safaris and zoos and caparisoned elephants in Dasara procession.' The Minister expressed concern over the rising number of electrocution of elephants due to illegal electrification of fences and leopards dying in snares. Mr. Khandre mentioned about the shocking case of poisoning of five tigers in Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Chamarajanagar. On the occasion, a booklet and poster featuring details on Dasara elephants were released. The maiden awards, instituted in the name of Arjuna, the Dasara elephant, were presented on the occasion.

A new month always brings new energy, and in astrology, certain signs are naturally aligned for positive shifts. While every zodiac sign has the power to grow and succeed, astrologers have identified three signs that are especially fortunate this August: Leo, Cancer, and Virgo. Leo Leo natives may have experienced confusion or scattered thoughts recently, mainly due to Mercury retrograde affecting their sign through much of June. Although its lingering effects continue until August 11, clarity starts to return mid-month. Leos will notice stronger mental focus, better decision-making, and the release of old habits or emotional burdens. Letting go of what no longer serves you will open the door to exciting new opportunities. Toward the end of the month, on August 25, Venus moves into Leo, enhancing charm, attraction, and social connections. This is the time to connect with others, express your desires, and step confidently into the spotlight. The universe is ready to support your goals. Cancer Cancer is set to have an especially favorable month, possibly the luckiest of all signs.
