1. The big ticket Spanish spot
Legado, Shoreditch
Founder of Mayfair's turbo tapas joint Sabor, Nieves Barragán Mohacho, is set to open her second restaurant in league with the all-conquering JKS Restaurants. Legado – which translates to 'Legacy' – will serve up lesser-known regional Spanish dishes, and will also be home to La Taberna, an all-day bar and terrace where you can pick up pintxos, cava and sherry.

2. The return of an indie sleaze icon
The Macbeth, Hoxton
This pub will be extremely familiar to anyone who got drunk in London about 15 years ago. Formerly the site of grotty gigs, indie discos and nu-rave raves, the Macbeth is reopening as a Portuguese gastropub with Jamie Allan - formerly of Four Legs, who opened Finsbury Park's The Plimsoll and Tollington's – in charge alongside his good pal Patrick Nolan.
70 Hoxton Street, Hoxton, N1 6LP
Opening date: August 13
3. Pizza!
Bad Boy Pizzeria, Bethnal Green
Another day, another London pizza parlour opens. After years of shifting their award-winning slices at Bad Boy Pizza Society pop-ups at Seven Dials Market, Vinegar Yard and the Railway Tavern in Tulse HIll, they have finally found their forever home in Bethnal Green. You'll be able to score everything from single slices to full pies, from NY-style to Sicilian squares, as well as sides such as chicken vodka parms, and deep fried burrata in spicy marinara. The drinks menu will feature BBPS's brand new house lager as well as wines, local beers and shots.

4. The big brewery
40ft Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow
Say a jaunty little 'cheers!' to the Blackhorse Beer Mile's new arrival; Dalston's 40ft Brewery is opening up a brand new mega space. With 100 seats inside, and another 100 outside, the brewery will also have a dog park, food pop-ups and a regular roster of comedy nights, DJ sets and daytime events for kids. 40ft Blackhorse Road opens August 8 and a crowdfunder is running until the day before, which is offering a double money drinks credit to order to help support the new venue.
Unit 10, Lockwood Way, Walthamstow, E17 5RB

5. More pizza!
Berberè, Marylebone
Alright, this is getting silly. There's yet more new pizza in London, this time courtesy of Berberè, sourdough specialists who already have locations in Clapham, Kentish Town and on Tottenham Court Road, as well as a whole host of spots in Italy (which is how you know they're good). Founded in Bologna in 2010, they've been voted 'world's 6th best artisan pizzeria' by 50 Top Pizza. Booze comes from wine guys Passione Vino, and beer pros Signature Brew.
50 James Street, Marylebone, W1U 1HB
Opening date: August 4
6. The Michelin-star adjacent bar
The Clove Club, Shoreditch
Double Michelin star champ The Clove Club is getting into the holiday spirit by (re)launching its bar for the summer. You used to be able to swing by the front of the restaurant for snacky bits and drinks, so we're happy to see the return of this more affordable way to enjoy Isaac McHale's immaculate food, even if it is only for a few weeks. Expect warm crab dumplings, fish pakoras, chicken kebabs, Scottish tacos (pigs blood and buckwheat pancakes with pork jowl) and parmesan fries with Manjimup truffle.
Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, Shoreditch, EC1V 9LT
Opening date: Open now
7. Something for the weekend
Dante, Islington
A little bit French, a little bit Italian, Dante is a new Friday-to-Sunday pop-up kitchen from chef pals Louis Korovilas and Taylor Sessegnon-Shakespeare, who met while working at London's longest running Michelin star restaurant, Pied A Terre in Fitzrovia. The menu includes broadbean orzotto with glazed chicken wing, aubergine scarpece with clam bagna cauda and crispy palourde clams, beef carpaccio with oyster mayonnaise and baby artichokes and whole sucking pig belly for two.
Islington Arts Club, 235 Upper Street, N1 1RU
Opening date: August 1
8. Even more pizza!
Dough Hands x Toklas Bakery, Temple
Dough Hands makes the finest pizza in London and now you don't need to head to London Fields or Nunhead to try it. Toklas Bakery is hosting a two night pop-up collab with Dough Hands founder Hannah Drye on August 5 and 6, from 6pm until they sell out. There'll be white pie with Calabrian chilli and hot honey on offer, as well as pepperoni and pickled peppers, with wedge Caesar as well as tomato salad with tahini and salted ricotta on the side. Toklas will be providing passionfruit and coconut ice cream sandwiches for pudding. On August 7 Toklas Bakery will also see a pop-up visit from Stoke Newington's Sonora Taquería, with tacos, tortillas and tequila.

New Man Utd hero Ethan Williams following in footsteps of history-making uncle immortalised in mural by rivals Man City
His legendary uncle compared Ethan Williams to a former Premier League winger WILL I NEVER New Man Utd hero Ethan Williams following in footsteps of history-making uncle immortalised in mural by rivals Man City Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HIS famous uncle is a Manchester City legend who became the first black goalkeeper to play in the English top-flight. But Manchester United youngster Ethan Williams has no time to worry about torn family loyalties between the Red and Blue side of the city. 9 Ethan Williams is the new kid on the block at Manchester United Credit: Getty 9 The teenager was embraced by his team-mates after scoring his first Man Utd goal Credit: Getty 9 Ethan's uncle Alex Williams MBE has spent most of his life employed by Manchester City Credit: Getty 9 Williams is a Manchester hero, something Ethan will surely hope to become one day Credit: Getty Play Dream Team now! That's because the 19-year-old winger is too busy trying to break into Ruben Amorim's Premier League squad before their season opener against Arsenal on August 16. Local Manchester lad Ethan's "dreams came true" when he scored his first United goal during the club's 4-1 win over Bournemouth in Chicago on Wednesday. A minute after coming on, the academy graduate was on hand to pick up the ball from inside the box after new signing Diego Leon tripped over while driving towards goal. And before you knew it, Ethan, who is equally sharp with both feet, cut inside and unleashed a devastating right-foot finish into former Chelsea stopper Djordje Petrovic's near post. READ MORE MAN UTD MAN UTD FILES Amorim reckons Sesko is 'dynamite' who could help Hojlund explode into life Rarely does this United team score four goals. And rarely - if ever- does Amorim celebrate when they do hit the back of the net. In fact, fans will be hard pressed to remember a single time when the Portuguese gaffer joyfully jumped up and down the sideline. We've simply never seen it. On that, Amorim, 40, said: 'I celebrated that goal. 'It is not usually even during the season but I celebrated that goal because I really like to see the kids who work really well, who don't have a lot of space during training, but still they are there. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS 'They understand the idea, they press and fight. They controlled the game so I'm pleased.' Ethan had expected to spend much of this summer working with the Under-21s, only for Amorim to last week give him the nod for their pre-season tour to the United States. Amorim refuses to guarantee Hojlund Man Utd future amid Sesko transfer push But while Ethan dreams of Old Trafford glory, his uncle Alex, 63, is a true blue icon who would've been celebrating somewhere too. Alex made history when he became the first black goalkeeper to play in the old First Division in 1980, going on to made 125 appearances for City until 1985. He's also a celebrated figure for his incredible 33 years with City in the community, earning an MBE in 2002 - three years before Ethan was born - for his work with young people. He's destined to be a star, although it's a shame his favourite colour is red rather than blue. Alex Williams about Ethan And that saw Alex join club legends David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan in having a pitch at the training ground named after him. The local Moss Side ex-stopper is even included in a dazzling mural in Platt Lane, Fallowfield, Manchester - metres away from where he grew up close to City's old Maine Road Stadium. The proud uncle charted the highs and lows of his career in a 2023 autobiography that also touched upon a teenager making waves at Carrington. 9 Williams takes centre stage of a new Manchester City mural, alongside women's stars Chelsea Nightingale and Khiara Keating and Fallowfield-born Neil Young Credit: MEN Media 9 The 63-year-old became the first black goalkeeper to play in the old First Division in the 80s Credit: Alamy 9 Alex made more than 100 appearances for United's closest rivals City Credit: Shutterstock Editorial In his book 'You Saw Me Standing Alone', Alex wrote: 'Ethan is progressing well and has the potential to go all the way. 'He's the younger son of my brother Lloyd and is similar in style to former City winger Leroy Sane. "He's quick, has a terrific left foot and an eye for goal. He's destined to be a star, although it's a shame his favourite colour is red rather than blue. 'I just hope Ethan is as happy during his career as I was during mine.' Incidentally, Alex's final City appearance came during a 3-0 home defeat against Man Utd, where he gave away a penalty in 1985 - a year after lifting the Under-21 European Championships with England. 9 Ruben Amorim more or less celebrated for the first time after Ethan scored on Wednesday Credit: Getty After brief spells with Queen of the South and Port Vale, Alex hung up his gloves at the young age of 25 in 1987 due recurrent back injuries. Ethan joined United from Rochdale aged 14 and quickly settled in, later earning calls to join first team training under former boss Erik ten Hag. The tricky forward signed his first professional contract with United a year ago in July 2024, and was quickly shipped out on loan to gain experience at Cheltenham Town. He's just returned from a fruitful loan spell with the League Two side, where he netted twice in 17 appearances. And Ethan might be hoping for a mural of his own on the Trafford side of the city in the distant future.

The rundown Hollywood Premiere Motel just made history
Who says Hollywood is only about skin-deep appearances? Would a place that shallow be able to look beyond the crumbling exterior of the Hollywood Premiere Motel to see the good bones beneath and award it with an invitation to join L.A.'s Historic-Cultural Monument List? The designation came during the July 30 city council meeting, at which everyone seemed to have a one-liner locked and loaded for the first motel to ever make the list. 'It may have a 1.7-star Tripadvisor rating, but we don't judge our landmarks by thread count,' Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez said in a statement. Commission President Barry Milofsky was more skeptical, saying, 'My initial response, looking at the nomination, was, really?' But in a town that lives and dies by good reviews, the motel at 5333 Hollywood Boulevard proudly defied the odds with a unanimous vote to add it to the list. The Hollywood Premiere may be the first motel to land on the Historic-Cultural Monument list, but its architect, Joyce Miller, is only the third woman to have a building make the cut. Built in 1960, the Hollywood Premiere features 42 units and its now-iconic Googie-style neon sign. Like everything else in Los Angeles, it's served as a filming location for a wide variety of projects, including Twin Peaks, Season 3 of Fargo and the Justin Timberlake "Can't Stop the Feeling" music video. The Historic-Cultural Monument List includes a wide variety of Los Angeles buildings, from the obvious (Griffith Park Observatory) to the French restaurant Taix and, well, the Hollywood Premiere Motel. But inclusion on the list does not automatically protect a structure from demolition or renovation. Its designation merely requires the Office of Historic Resources to review permit applications before any alterations, while an environmental review is needed before demolition can move forward. But before you rush out to book a room at the first motel to make the Historic-Cultural Monument list, you may want to skim those TripAdvisor reviews—although, to be fair, the most recent review was written in 2018. "Looks like a snuff film set," one visitor wrote. Well, maybe what's on the outside really is all that matters. It is Hollywood, after all.
