Honda N-One e: Could this be the game changer for Honda in India?

India Today3 days ago
Honda has officially unveiled the N-One e, its smallest electric vehicle (EV) designed for urban commuters, blending retro-inspired styling in an electric avatar. The kei car, showcased as a prototype at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, made its production debut in Japan, with sales set to begin in September 2025.The N-One e adheres to Japan's kei car regulations, measuring under 3.4m in length with a single electric motor producing up to 63bhp. While full technical specifications are yet to be released, Honda claims the N-One e achieves a WLTP range of over 270km, surpassing the 245km range of the related N-Van e. The vehicle supports 50kW DC fast charging, allowing a full charge in approximately 30 minutes due to its compact battery.
advertisementA standout feature is the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, enabling the N-One e to power external devices or even homes during outages with an optional Honda Power Supply Connector. The interior prioritises simplicity and practicality, featuring physical controls, a one-pedal driving mode, and a 50:50 split folding rear seat for enhanced cargo space. Optional accessories include a 9-inch Honda Connect navigation system and a sporty cosmetic kit with Shelby-style stripes.
Available in five colours: Cheerful Green, Platinum White Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Fjord Mist Pearl, and Seabed Blue Pearl, the N-One e combines a boxy, high-roof design with a sleek, modern aesthetic. It also includes Honda Sensing safety features and Honda Connect for remote vehicle control.
While launching in Japan, the N-One e is slated for a European debut at the IAA Munich auto show. With its compact size, efficient range, and innovative features, the N-One e aims to compete in the electric kei car market, challenging rivals like the Nissan Sakura.Honda had earlier revealed plans to introduce an electric vehicle for the Indian market, initially stating it would be based on the recently launched Elevate. However, the company has now shifted direction, the upcoming EV will be an entirely new model, not derived from the Elevate. Although specific details are still under wraps, it is understood that Honda now sees the need to clearly distinguish its EV offerings from its internal combustion engine (ICE) models in order to succeed in India.
It remains to be if Honda will launch this small electric car in India or not. If it does, then Honda will create a new EV hatchback segment as the nearest competitor, as far as dimensions are concerned, happens to be the Tata Tiago.ev.advertisementSubscribe to Auto Today Magazine- Ends
