WITH JERA'S NEW LNG AGREEMENTS, ALL EYES TURN TO TOKYO AS JAPAN ENERGY SUMMIT & EXHIBITION 2025 APPROACHES
JERA's Global CEO and Chair, Mr. Yukio Kani, and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will both address these developments live at the events' Opening Ceremony on 18 June at 10:00. Their remarks will underscore the strategic relevance of long-term LNG supply agreements, and the indispensable role LNG continues to play in Japan's energy resilience.
In a show of institutional alignment, the 14th LNG Producer-Consumer Conference, co-hosted by METI and the International Energy Agency (IEA), will be co-located with the Japan Energy Summit & Exhibition on 20 June for the first time, reinforcing the event's growing prominence as a market-moving platform.
The exhibition floor will feature major players including JERA, Tokyo Gas, Chevron, Aramco, Cheniere, JOGMEC and TotalEnergies. Attendees can explore market-ready solutions spanning LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, AI-driven optimisation, renewables, and next-generation infrastructure. JERA will host daily live knowledge-sharing sessions at their booth, offering insights into their Digital Power Plant initiative and AI-enabled operations.
Beyond the exhibition, the Strategic Summit will feature a powerhouse line-up of speakers, including Wael Sawan, CEO of Shell; Sanjiv Lamba, CEO of Linde; and Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. Discussions will centre on energy diversification, LNG certification, Scope 3 decarbonisation, and the role of clean fuels in industrial growth.
The Climatetech Theatre will offer free-to-attend sessions each afternoon, including the highly anticipated panel on fusion energy innovation and the final pitch round of the Energy Innovators Challenge, spotlighting next-generation startups and ideas. Side events, such as the Women in Energy Networking Reception, Future Leaders Breakfast, and a Private Networking event hosted by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), round out a packed programme of strategic engagements.

Trump announces US-Japan LNG joint venture in Alaska
TOKYO: US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Japan would form a joint venture with the US to develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska. However, a Japanese government official overseeing resource development said they were unaware of any such agreement. Trump made the announcement while addressing lawmakers at the White House, where he discussed trade relations with Japan. 'We concluded the one deal ... and now we're going to conclude another one because they're forming a joint venture with us at, in Alaska, as you know, for the LNG,' he said. 'They're all set to make that deal now.' It remains unclear whether Trump was referring specifically to the proposed $44 billion Alaska LNG project, which includes an 800-mile pipeline and a liquefaction plant for exports. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) official stated they were working to verify Trump's remarks. Japanese firms, including major LNG buyers JERA and Tokyo Gas, have previously shown interest in the Alaska LNG project but emphasized the need to evaluate costs and other conditions before committing. A JERA spokesperson could not confirm the joint venture mentioned by Trump, while Tokyo Gas declined to comment, stating they were not involved in any such agreement. Other potential buyers, such as Thailand's PTT and India's GAIL, have also expressed interest in the project.

Prof's AI tools take top honours
Beaming: Prof Lim (centre) celebrating his double gold win with Ai3D PLT collaborators Phang (left) and Haiwei Zuo (right). IN every problem lies an opportunity to solve it. True to this spirit of invention, Prof Garenth Lim King Hann devised solutions to two problems he identified in sports training and elderly healthcare. What followed were innovations with the potential to transform both fields – earning him recognition at the recent International Invention, Innovation, Technology Competition & Exhibition (ITEX 2025). Prof Lim – a lecturer at Curtin University Malaysia's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – won two gold medals for 'Ai3D-CAMS' and 'AMEND (Assessment of Memory and Eye Movements for Neurodegenerative Diseases)'. Both innovations were developed through the varsity's artificial intelligence (AI) spin-off, Ai3D PLT – a company Prof Lim co-founded with Dr Jonathan Phang Then Sien and Dr Basil Andy Lease. Ai3D-CAMS is a portable, AI-driven 3D motion capture system designed for precision sports like archery. Unlike traditional systems, it requires no physical markers and offers real-time, voice-controlled motion analysis – empowering athletes to train independently while giving coaches instant insights into micro-movements, posture and technique. 'Its portability and ease of use make Ai3D-CAMS a game-changer – not just for elite athletes, but also for schools, community clubs and national teams,' said Prof Lim in a press release. AMEND is a mixed reality-based tool that turns cognitive testing into a simple, non-invasive game. Using eye-tracking and interactive tasks, it helps detect early signs of memory loss or attention deficits, potentially identifying Alzheimer's before symptoms become critical. 'We are turning complex screenings into engaging experiences that can be done in any clinic or care home. 'AMEND could significantly advance early diagnosis and improve outcomes in elderly care,' Prof Lim explained. Both inventions are part of Ai3D PLT's mission to drive industrial innovation using AI and 3D technology across sectors like sports, healthcare and energy. 'We are not just inventing – we are solving real-world problems and making advanced technology accessible,' said Prof Lim. ITEX 2025, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from May 29 to 31, showcased over 900 innovations from 15 countries. Themed 'The Power of STEAM and AI', the event celebrated forward-thinking technologies that merge science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) with AI.
