A unit of the Defence Research & Development Organisation has "successfully" carried out field trials of a compact software defined radio (SDR) and a key communication system, reinforcing the commitment of the organisation in developing indigenous and mission critical communication solution for the national security, officials said. The trials were done by Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL), Dehradun in Joshimath area of Uttarakhand. "Both the systems demonstrated robust and reliable performance meeting the user defined operational benchmarks," the DRDO said in a post on X on Tuesday.
The trials were conducted in close coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs, central armed police forces (CAPFs) and other agencies, it said.
"DEAL, Dehradun successfully carried out the field trials of SDR Manpack and Compact Transhorizon Communication System (CTCS) in Joshimath, Uttarakhand. The trials were conducted in close coordination with MHA/CAPFs/DLIC user agencies and DEAL teams. Officers from various paramilitary force which includes ITBP, SSB, BSF, Assam Rifles, IB, NSG, CRPF, CISF and other agencies also participated in the trials," the DRDO post said.
The trials were conducted in varied terrain and operational environment, aiming to rigorously validate the performance of both the systems in real world conditions including "verification of key parameters as per QR & TDs," it added.
According to the DRDO website, an "SDR is a secure indigenous system with legacy communication support and secure digital voice/data communication for naval application with 3 channel (2V/UHF band and 1 HF band), 4-channel (2V/UHF band and 2L-band) for tactical communication and single channel operation in V/UHF (Manpack role) and UHF band (handheld role)".
And, CTCS is a "large hop terrestrial backhaul communication system" developed by DEAL, Dehradun, for ensuring high data rate connectivity to user station and remote locations. This system can be used in the remote locations where civil communication grid is not present, according to information available on the DRDO website.
"Both the systems demonstrated robust and reliable performance meeting the user defined operational benchmarks. The milestone reinforces the commitment of DRDO in developing indigenous and mission critical communication solution for national security," the DRDO said in its post and also shared some photos of the trial process.

Gujarat govt to roll out global-standard street design norms

Gandhinagar: As part of its 'Urban Development Year' initiative for 2025–26, the Gujarat government is set to revamp the way cities are planned and experienced by introducing international-level Street Design Regulations (SDR). Inspired by urban centres such as London, Paris, and Singapore, the move aims to create walkable, green, and people-friendly streets that double as public spaces for leisure, movement, and tourism. Sources in the state urban development department said a proposal to amend the existing General Development Control Rules (GDCR) has been drafted. This includes specific provisions for transforming roads into 'complete streets'—thoroughfares that prioritise pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport alongside vehicles. "In global cities, streets are vibrant public spaces and key tourist attractions. We want to create similar experiences in Gujarat's urban areas," said a senior govt official. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad The proposed changes will require all upcoming Development Plans (DPs), Town Planning Schemes (TPS), and Local Area Plans (LAPs) to explicitly include complete street designs. Basic street sections will be identified in DPs and later tailored during the drafting of TPS and LAPs. To legally anchor this approach, the state also plans to amend the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act (GTPUDA), making the integration of walkable streets mandatory in all statutory planning documents. In addition, the state will frame a comprehensive set of SDRs and publish official guidelines to direct the design and implementation of urban streets across diverse cityscapes. These guidelines will ensure that new street infrastructure is safe, accessible, and designed with the pedestrian in mind. To showcase the model, the state will also support pilot projects in key cities, developing selected roads as 'walkable, green and complete streets'. A dedicated Challenge Fund will be established to encourage cities to take up these pilots, which are expected to serve as templates for future expansion. Officials added that the initiative will also include changes in legislation and policy to strengthen street management and ensure smooth enforcement of the new norms. Pointers: From Roads to complete streets All streets within TPs and LAP are to be designed as complete streets The Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act (GTPUDA) will be amended to incorporate the changes A set of Street Design Regulations (SDR) will be developed to guarantee safe and comfortable streets State to identify and support cities to launch pilot projects for implementing complete streets Challenge Fund will be created to enable cities to develop pilot streets as walkable, green & complete streets

India has made huge leap in missile technology: Former DRDO chairman

Dr G Satheesh Reddy COIMBATORE: India has reduced its missile production turnaround time from 10-12 years to 2-3 years, making a huge leap in technology, said Dr G Satheesh Reddy, president of the Aeronautical Society of India and former secretary of Directorate of Defence Research & Development and chairman of DRDO . 'This enables us to stand on a par with developed countries like the US, Russia and China though these countries are one to two decades ahead of us," he told TOI on the sidelines of a programme in Coimbatore on Saturday. "India is a missile power. India is actively developing hypersonic missiles and air-to-ground-borne missiles like the BrahMos,' he said. He said India has 300-400 drone manufacturing companies with nearly 25,000 AI engineers in the southern region. They are capable of making the world use products made in India. "So far, India was working for others, getting their products. Now India has to make them get our products and also get them to work for us," he said. Earlier, addressing at the Academia-Industry Meet 2025 for Aerospace & Defence, hosted by the Kumaraguru Centre for Industrial Research & Innovation in association with the Aeronautical Society of India, he highlighted four key takeaways from Operation Sindoor. First, the Indian armed forces have gained confidence in indigenous technologies. Second, it boosted the morale of the country. Third, the industry has witnessed success, which will increase orders. Lastly, the world has seen India's capabilities, which is expected to increase export orders as well.

India making 12 types of hypersonic missiles, can attack Pakistan, China within...., missiles are developed by.... Project Vishnu: In recent years, India has not only strengthened its armed forces with high-tech weaponry but also established itself as one of the leading defence arms exporters in the world. As the country shares its borders with Pakistan and China, it has to increase its military prowess to safeguard itself from any threat. Taking a big leap in the hypersonic race, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on a project that has given sleepless nights to its neighbouring enemies. The most advanced hypersonic missile project of the country has been named Project Vishnu. The hypersonic missiles under this project are being developed with completely indigenous technology. It has the power to change the balance of power in all of Asia. Does Project Vishnu Have the Power to Change the Balance of Power Across Asia? DRDO, known for making lethal weapons for the Indian Armed Forces, is working on India's most advanced hypersonic missile project to date. The missiles being developed under Project Vishnu will be built using completely indigenous technology. Missiles such as ET-LDHCM being built under Project Vishnu is capable of touching the speed of Mach 8 (about 11,000 kmph). With this, India will join the elite group including US, China and Russia that can build hypersonic weapons on their own. Does Project Vishnu Include An Interceptor Missile? Under Project Vishnu, the DRDO will make not one but 12 different types of hypersonic missile systems simultaneously. These 12 hypersonic missiles will have attacking missiles as well as interceptor missiles to intercept and destroy the enemy's cruise or ballistic missiles. It means it also includes air defence. DRDO aims to develop hypersonic glide vehicles before 2030. With this capability, India will have the power to target any part of Pakistan at hypersonic speed. Because of the hypersonic speed It is almost impossible to stop these missiles. How Many Countries Have Hypersonic Missile Technology? So far only three countries in the world have hypersonic missile technology the are – United States, Russia and China. India will also join the league very soon. The missiles being developed under Project Vishnu are capable of carrying conventional or nuclear warheads weighing 1000 to 2000 kg. Can These Missiles Be Fired From Anywhere? The ET-LDHCM missile program has a powerful scramjet engine for hypersonic capabilities. It has undergone initial testing by DRDO. This missile system is designed for launch from mobile platforms such as trucks, aircraft, and naval vessels. Development of a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) missile is progressing rapidly. As per media reports, the missile will have a range of approx 2,000 km and has sophisticated navigation technology, making it almost impossible for even China's most advanced air defences to intercept it.
