Patrick Mahomes continues to be questioned over a single Super Bowl loss despite being an established NFL quarterback

With unprecedented postseason success, there are still those who question
Patrick Mahomes
' place atop the list of NFL quarterbacks. With three
Super Bowl
rings, three Super Bowl MVPs, and two regular-season MVP awards—all this before the age of 30.
But somehow, one Super Bowl loss in 2024, and the argument about Patrick Mahomes' supremacy has flared up again, with some wondering if he is still worthy of being considered the best quarterback in the league.
Paul Pierce
ranks Patrick Mahomes below
Josh Allen
and
Lamar Jackson
, sparking fresh controversy
NBA legend Paul Pierce stirred up trouble this week by putting Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson ahead of Patrick Mahomes in an analysis of quarterback play strictly based on 2024 season data.
"I know Mahomes got him to a Super Bowl.
But we know that this Kansas City Chiefs team was built around their defense... they don't get the credit for carrying them... through the regular season, but to the Super Bowl," Paul Pierce said.
Patrick Mahomes ranked second-best QB behind Josh Allen, is he losing his grip? | NFL | THE FACILITY
Paul Pierce doubled down by expressing that he wouldn't even rank Patrick Mahomes No. 2 on his list, but rather would have Allen first and Jackson second—a scalding hot take that received instant backlash from football fans and experts alike.

Despite a so-called "down year" numerically, Patrick Mahomes still did what Allen and Jackson haven't done yet: took his team to the Super Bowl.
Mahomes' detractors frequently reference recent regular-season statistics, but the
NFL
's elite are judged by what they accomplish in the postseason—and that's where Mahomes is alone:
• 4 Super Bowl appearances in 7 seasons
• 3 Super Bowl championships
• 11–3 playoff record as a starter
Compare that to Josh Allen, who holds an NFL record for most playoff starts (13) without reaching a Super Bowl, and Lamar Jackson, whose postseason track record has been far less consistent.
If there was ever a question about Mahomes' mindset, he put it to rest this week by taking a pass on celebrating Independence Day to concentrate on practice.

The case for Allen and Jackson stands—both are incredible players with explosive skill sets. But NFL greatness doesn't materialize on fantasy numbers or the hype of the media—it's constructed on championships. And that's where Mahomes still excels. Regardless of how many naysayers pour cold water on his legacy, Mahomes' career work says it all.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: 'There's a Gill. There's a way' - Shubman follows double hundred with imperious 161

India's captain Shubman Gill celebrates after scoring a century during day four of the second cricket test match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England, Saturday, July 5, 2025. (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Birmingham: Shubman Gill played his first false shot of the day about an hour and a half before stumps on Day Four. Shoaib Bashir's delivery gripped and kicked off the surface and got big on Gill, who got the leading edge and offered a simple catch back to the bowler. By then he had plundered 161 off 162 balls, run the England team ragged and ensured that India had all but batted the hosts out of the game. In doing so, Gill finished the Edgbaston Test with 430 runs off 549 balls in 752 minutes of exquisite batting across two innings. Gill has been branded as a 'prince' in India cricket and he confirmed his status as batting royalty in contemporary Test cricket. The partisan Edgbaston crowd gave him a raucous applause as he headed to the dressing room. But in a matter of seconds, it started booing as Nitish Kumar Reddy jogged out to bat with India already 591 runs ahead in the second Test. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The crowd had already started chanting 'borrriiinng, borrriiing' when Gill carried on batting even after bringing up his 150. It went on till the time India declared at 427/6, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar unbeaten on 69 and 12 respectively, leaving the English batting 608 runs to chase with an hour and an entire day's play to go. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo The extra time taken to bat England out of the game appeared not to matter as pacers Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep got into the act immediately, taking out Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Joe Root late in the day. England ended at 72/3 at stumps and are staring down the barrel in this Test. The crowd's reaction at the back end of Gill's innings could be interpreted as a reflection of the mindset of the English team — exhausted and frustrated. The hosts had endured classical Test batting in testing conditions by overnight batters KL Rahul and Karun Nair, the imperious presence of Gill, Rishabh Pant's manic 65 off 58 and Jadeja's comfortable two hours of batting. By the end of the innings, almost all fielders at the boundary were struggling to pick the ball and were running in wrong directions. 'Siraj puts his heart on his sleeve': Morkel lauds pacers as India close in on win Dense clouds and blustery winds welcomed both teams at the start of the day. The overhead conditions, preceded by persistent overnight drizzle, offered the most challenging conditions yet for batters in this Test. India may have been 244 ahead with nine wickets in hand going into the fourth day, but Rahul and Nair had to deal with the moving ball for an hour. The Indian dressing room, having endured a brutal English run chase in the first Test, could not breathe easy even after Rahul fell for a pleasant 55 after Nair's indifferent 26. Out came Pant and the game moved at a blink-and miss rate. With his outrageous hitting and Gill's sublime strokeplay at the other end, they pinned England down. Bizarre field settings and bowling tactics were matched by outlandish batting by both Pant and Gill. Pant walked out to bat with a license to kill. It may never be established if the team management issued it to him. He was dead set on depositing the ball into the crowd. After a boundary and six to get off the mark, he drilled Stokes to Crawley at mid-off only to be put down. Such was the pressure exerted by Pant in his knock, which had three thunderous sixes and eight boundaries, that Stokes started setting funny fields to even Gill. Gill was in a zone where he could pick any spot in the field and reach the boundary. In a passage of play that could be best described as street cricket, with England resorting to setting a 6:3 field on the leg side, Gill moved around the crease like a bully and accessed different parts of the field. Once Pant was dismissed in a bizarre way, the bat flying to mid-wicket as he mistimed Bashir to long-off, conventional cricket returned. Flood emergency unfolds in Kerr County and beyond as rescue efforts intensify Torrential rainfall across the Texas Hill Country has led to life-threatening flooding, with rivers like the Guadalupe overflowing and sweeping away roads, homes, and campsites. Emergency responders have rescued hundreds, and evacuation orders remain in place in affected counties. IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: 'They've outbatted and outbowled England' - Nasser Hussain, Stuart Broad say India deserve to win at Edgbaston

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - JULY 05: India bowler Akash Deep celebrates with team mates after bowling England batsman Joe Root during day four of the Second Test Match between England and India at Edgbaston on July 05, 2025 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by) Former England cricketers Nasser Hussain and Stuart Broad strongly believe that India deserve to win at Edgbaston after having dominated England with the bat and with the ball throughout the Test match. "If you look at the nine days of the Test series, they've probably won more, in fact they've definitely won more sessions than England, yet they find themselves one nil down," Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "That's why they needed this evening and that's why they need tomorrow, because they've played so much good cricket in two Test matches now, they feel that they should go to Lord's 1-1. Excellent, excellent with the bat and then the ball. "It's a real worry that their seamers got more out of this pitch with the new ball than England did. That new ball burst from Akash Deep was absolutely wonderful." Stuart Broad explained why India have generated more swing than the England pacers and lauded Akash Deep for his splendid spell. Poll Who do you think deserves to win the Test match at Edgbaston? India England Neither Too close to call "I think when surfaces do dry up a little bit, the new ball can nip off the sort of cracks or the drier surfaces," said Broad. "That was just an outstanding spell from Akash Deep today, bringing the stumps into play. I think he's slightly shorter than Carse and Tongue, so he can bowl a slightly different length to hit the stumps. 'Siraj puts his heart on his sleeve': Morkel lauds pacers as India close in on win "I think India, we have to be honest, India have outbowled England in this Test match and outbatted them and that's why they're 536 runs ahead with a whole day to go, needing seven wickets to win the Test match," he said. Broad admitted that after England chased down 371 runs on the final day of the Headingley Test, he thought the series would be one-way traffic. "They've been superb this week and I must admit, I thought after that day five at Headingley, I thought this series could be gone when you concede that many to lose a Test match when you've controlled the Test match like they did. How do you pick yourself up? And they've done it superbly," said Broad. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
