It's understood that several attempts were made to attack homes in the Fountain Estate before police intervened.
Videos posted to social media show crowds of youths shooting fireworks at officers in riot gear.
Derek Moore of the North West Cultural Partnership, which is based in the Fountain, said issues have been ongoing for six to eight weeks.
Meetings have been held with the PSNI, he said, with pressure applied on them and individuals with influence in the Bogside to engage with the young people responsible.
It appears to have continued since April, when two Catholic boys were attacked in the Nelson Drive area of the Waterside.
At the time that sparked what police described as tit-for-tat "sectarian hate crimes", including a paint bomb attack on a mural in the Fountain estate.
Mr Moore said the attacks in recent weeks have been 'low level but constant'.
Youths in the Bogside have gathered a large amount of bonfire material at Meenan Square, a short distance from the Fountain.
They congregate at the site and Mr Moore said this has then led to youths moving towards the Fountain or gathering on the Derry Walls which overlook the Fountain.
The PSNI has been made aware of ongoing incidents but Mr Moore said the police service has been reluctant to act until now.
The PSNI has been contacted for comment.

Fermanagh shooting: third person dies, another remains in hospital

A third person has died following a shooting in Co Fermanagh. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said they died in hospital this afternoon. A fourth individual remains in hospital, where their condition is described as serious. Police remain at the scene of the shooting at the Drummeer Road area of Maguiresbridge. READ MORE The PSNI said that all four individuals are from the same household. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it dispatched an emergency team after receiving a 999 call at 8.20am. Three emergency ambulances, one rapid response paramedic, two ambulance officers and an ambulance doctor were sent to the scene. The charity air ambulance was also dispatched. One of the injured was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, by air ambulance and another to South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, about 13 km from Maguiresbridge, by ambulance. Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill said she was 'absolutely heartbroken' by the news of the shooting in Maguiresbridge. 'My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the local community. I have no doubt that the people of Maguiresbridge will come together and support one another through this incredibly difficult time,' she said on social media website X. Sinn Féin MP Pat Cullen has expressed her deep shock following the reports of the shootings. The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP said her thoughts are 'with the victims and their families at this tragic time'. 'Police are currently at the scene of an incident outside Maguiresbridge and there are a number of road closures while they carry out their investigations. 'I would urge people to not speculate on the details of this tragic and shocking incident,' she said. Former DUP leader Arlene Foster, who is from nearby Brookeborough, said the news was 'just absolutely devastating' and the last thing you expect to hear from Maguiresbridge, which she described as 'a very sleepy little village in Fermanagh'. 'I just feel so sorry for everybody that has been impacted by what seems to be an absolutely horrific tragedy,' she told the News Letter. 'Obviously those involved will need a lot of support in the coming days and I am sure the community in Fermanagh will give that to them.' The former First Minister who represented Fermanagh locally, at Stormont and at Westminster said she knew wider family members linked to the situation. 'I send my deepest condolences love and support to them at this time,' she said. DUP MLA Deborah Erskine described a truly shocking incident which has 'stunned the entire community' as she expressed her condolences with those affected. 'The area of Maguiresbridge where this has happened is a rural, quiet area and everyone is deeply affected by what has happened this morning,' she said. - Additional reporting PA

Thug was on bail for naked rampage when he headbutted schoolgirl in street

'Completely naked?' the judge asked and the lawyer confirmed that yes, 'he became completely naked' An habitual offender who was on bail over a naked rampage in the middle of a street when he head butted a teenage girl, was yesterday jailed for seven months. Faced with two sets of offences committed by Stephen Lee Thompson, District Judge Nigel Broderick imposed sentences of three months and four months, ordering them to be served consecutively. 'I'm entirely satisfied that the custody threshold has been crossed because these offences are extremely serious,' said the Antrim Magistrates Court judge, sitting in Ballymena. At an earlier hearing 39-year-old Thompson, from Hillside in Antrim, entered guilty pleas to a total of five offences including three charges of common assault and single offences of disorderly behaviour and exposure. Taking the incident in chronological order, a prosecuting lawyer told the court it was just before 8pm on 7 May this year when police received a report of a naked male assaulting members of the public on the Station Road in Antrim. 'Completely naked?' the judge asked and the lawyer confirmed that yes, 'he became completely naked' as the incident progressed. 'At the start he was wearing trousers with no top but as the incident went on, he removed his bottom half,' she told the court. Lee Thompson stripped naked and tried to assault numerous members of the public during a rampage When police arrived, Thompson was standing on the road, 'behaving in an aggressive manner…completely naked and in an intoxicated state.' The first victim told police he had walked out of the bus station when the defendant ran up behind him and 'swung his arm around his neck and shoulders in an aggressive manner.' He was able to get into a woman's car to get away from Thompson and the court heard that as he ran up to the car, 'arms out by his side,' the driver feared she would be assaulted so she 'struck the defendant to the face.' Two other members of the public got into her car as well and they all drove off. Thompson was arrested at the time but released on police bail and the court heard it was almost two weeks later, on 20 May, when he assaulted a 15-year-old schoolgirl. The prosecutor told Judge Broderick it was around 20:35 when the 15-year-old 'confronted him for talking inappropriately' with her mates and he responded by head-butting the teenager. He was arrested a short distance away, outside Madden's Bar, and the court heard that he 'made admissions' during police interviews. Stephen Lee Thompson News in 90 Seconds - July 23rd Highlighting that Thompson 'has serious addiction issues,' defence counsel Grant Powles conceded that 'these are very serious matters obviously…but he is remorseful for his behaviour.' He told the court that in the latter offence, Thompson had been 'provoked in the sense of being called paedo by these young girls but he responded in the wrong way, he accepts that.' Mr Powles suggested 'there are sentencing options, apart from custody, that would assist him moving forward' but as Judge Broderick highlighted, such an approach would be acceptable 'if it's a one-off, but he has 113 previous convictions.' In addition to the jail sentences totalling seven months, the judge also ordered Thompson to sign the police sex offenders register for the next seven years.

Graduation marred as loyalist ‘assaults' student and threatens her dad over Palestine support

Student's father told his throat would be cut over Palestine support Police were called to a university graduation after a student's father was threatened with having his throat cut. The class of '25 were receiving their degrees in politics at a ceremony at Belfast's Waterfront Hall when a student unfurled a Palestinian flag moments after received his scroll. The display of solidarity with the people of Gaza drew thunderous applause and cheers from the audience. But it didn't meet with approval from several disgruntled guests. The Sunday World can reveal the ceremony was marred when a known loyalist with links to East Belfast UVF rounded on a father who was there to see his daughter get her degree, threatening to kill him. The proud father said he applauded the flag-carrying student 'as did most of the audience'. He said the man sitting directly in front him 'went into a rage.' 'He lost it, totally lost it, he turned round and shouted that he was going to kill me, he said he was going to slit my throat, it was full-on.' He said he refused to respond. 'I was aware of other people around me and what the day meant for everyone. I was there to see my daughter receive her degree, such a proud moment. 'I didn't want to take way from the occasion by getting into a row with this individual.' He said the incident escalated outside the main auditorium as attendees enjoyed refreshments. He said his tormentor barged into his daughter to confront him again. 'He assaulted my daughter, he absolutely assaulted her, shoving her out of the way in a really violent way,' he said. He paid tribute to the security staff who immediately intervened to prevent the situation getting out of control. 'They were great – they reacted very quickly,' he said. He said his daughter had registered a complaint with the PSNI. The PSNI confirmed they were informed of two incidents on July 10 but that no further action was being taken. 'Police received a report of an altercation in the Lanyon Place area of Belfast on Thursday, 10th of July at around midday. This matter was investigated and no offences were detected,' police told the Sunday World. 'A further report of an assault in the same area was made at around 7.30pm on Thursday, 10th of July. Enquiries were made and no complaint was received.' The Sunday World is aware of the identity of the man at the centre of the alleged assault. His social media shows him in paramilitary-style 'uniform' and posing at a UVF memorial in the east of the city. He is not thought to have any convictions. He is believed to have been at the Waterfront to support a family member who had graduated. Belfast's Waterfront Hall News in 90 Seconds - July 23rd In a separate development it has emerged that a video of the graduation ceremony posted on the University of Ulster website was initially taken down and then put back up with footage of the flag incident taken down. 'That was disappointing,' said the father who contacted the Sunday World. 'His gesture was greeted with support from the majority of the people at the Waterfront, and that is the feeling within the students and should not be edited out.' The University of Ulster confirmed a protest had taken place. 'Graduation is a significant milestone for Ulster University and our students, enjoyed in recent weeks by almost 5,000 graduates and their families across 19 ceremonies in Derry-Londonderry, Coleraine and Belfast. 'The university acknowledges that a peaceful expression of support occurred during one of these recent ceremonies. The university respects the right of freedom of expression. Alongside this, we take seriously our responsibility to maintain a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment, including at our graduation ceremonies where our primary focus is on celebrating the achievements of all our students during their time with Ulster University.' Pro-Palestine protests have become a familiar sight at graduation ceremonies across the UK this summer. This week graduates at Edinburgh University staged a mass walkout and protest. Graduates waved flags with slogans such as 'No universities in Gaza', 'Jews say divest', and 'Fund teaching not genocide' as they took to the stage. Videos on social media showed the event being interrupted as a student protester shouted from the crowd: 'How dare you? The UN has explicitly named the University of Edinburgh as one of the most significantly financially complicit universities in the Gaza genocide.' A large group of students were seen to rise, chanting, before walking out of the ceremony. The Edinburgh University Justice for Palestine Society posted other clips and reported that further protests had happened during ceremonies for biomedical sciences, engineering, chemistry, physics, and English Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur It came after a report by Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, named the University of Edinburgh as one of 'the most financially entangled' institutions in the UK to Israel. 'With both direct and indexed investments, the university ranks among the most financially entangled institutions in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,' Ms Albanese reported. Earlier in the summer a graduation ceremony at Cambridge was disrupted with pro-Palestine protesters accusing the university of being complicit in the genocide in Gaza.
