Fickou to captain youthful France squad for tour of New Zealand
GAEL FICKOU WILL captain an inexperienced France squad for their tour of New Zealand this summer, the French rugby federation announced on Tuesday.
The reigning Six Nations champions will be missing many senior players for the tour, such as Gregory Alldritt.
Coach Fabien Galthie has called up 37 players for the three matches against New Zealand on 5, 12 and 19 July.
However, the list will likely grow by up to five additional players following Saturday's Top 14 final between Toulouse and Bordeaux-Begles.
Fickou skippered the side for the friendly victory over England last weekend, and, with 94 caps, the Racing 92 centre is the most experienced active French player.

For the tour of New Zealand, where France have not beaten the All Blacks since 2009, the 31-year-old will be tasked with bringing experience to a squad featuring 28 players with fewer than 10 caps.
Fickou will be joined by other international veterans including prop Rabah Slimani and second row Romain Taofifenua.
But a number of others are absent such as forwards Alldritt, Paul Boudehent and Jean-Baptiste Gros — either through injury or the decision to rest them.
The squad could be bolstered with the addition of the likes of Romain Ntamack, Thomas Ramos, Thibaud Flament, Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey from the two Top 14 finalists.
Some of these players could fly to the southern hemisphere after the final if they have not already used up the quota of 2,000 minutes played over the whole season set by the national team.
However, Galthie has been able to count on the players from defeated semi-finalists Bayonne and Toulon, notably Bayonne fly-half Joris Segonds, Toulon flanker Esteban Abadie and winger Gabin Villiere.

Joe McCarthy enjoying time with 'high-energy' Henry Pollock on Lions Tour
Joe McCarthy has struck up an unexpected friendship with Henry Pollock as the British and Irish Lions rookies step up their hunt for Test selection. The forwards delivered eye-catching performances in Saturday's 54-7 victory over Western Force in Perth, seizing their chances three weeks out from the series opener against Australia. McCarthy finished man of the match after embellishing a mighty shift in defence with some impactful attacking moments, while Pollock made up for flashes of indiscipline with the dynamism only he can bring to the back row. Off the field, Ireland enforcer McCarthy has found himself forming an unlikely bromance with the swaggering England flanker. "Henry's actually a good fella. "But I've played golf with Alex Mitchell and me and Tommy Freeman are doing 'thought for the day' on the bus, so it's interesting to hear Tommy's thoughts. "One I liked was 'today is the oldest you ever have been and the youngest you ever will be'." McCarthy admits he felt under pressure to deliver against the Force as he became the first second row to put his hand up for selection alongside captain Maro Itoje in the Lions engine room against the Wallabies on 19 July. The display was reminiscent of his night against France in last year's Six Nations when he first served notice of his potential, but consistency has been elusive for the 24-year-old. "It's hard to put your finger on it, sometimes things just happen for you. But then you might prepare super well for a game and things don't happen for you," McCarthy said. "Here it feels like a level up. During the week I was nervous and on edge about playing well but I'm probably at my best when I feel like my back's against the wall a little bit. "Andy Farrell wants us to be super physical, on the edge, but he also tells us 'don't be desperate, don't force things – earn the right to get off the line, make tackles and make turnovers'."

Ireland U20s overcome Georgia to kickstart World Cup campaign
World U20 Championship: Ireland 35 Georgia 28 Ireland got their U-20 World Rugby Championship campaign off to an encouraging start with a bonus point win over a strong Georgian side in Calvisano. Skipper Éanna McCarthy said the key thing was to get the win by a side which finished bottom of the Six Nations earlier this season. 'We knew Georgia was going to be a massive physical battle but we stood up and made a good performance out of it and finished key moments,' said the Cork native who is in the Connacht academy. Head coach Neil Doak will know there is plenty of room for improvement but after winning just one game in the Six Nations the win was all that mattered in stifling heat in northern Italy. They will hope to build on this when they take on the hosts Italy in Viadana next Friday and there were plenty of signs they can achieve a second win there and head into a winner-takes-all final pool showdown with New Zealand. Ireland led 18-14 at the break, having got off to the perfect start when Tullamore RFC product Paidi Farrell crowned his U-20 debut with a try in just over 70 seconds when the winger, who now plays with Old Wesley, scored in the right corner after a pressure blitz from the Irish from the start. When several surges were repelled, out-half Tom Wood went wide with Derry Moloney putting the other winger in for the opening score. Wood, a third generation Irish international following in the footsteps of dad Keith and grandfather Gordon, was off target with the conversion but stretched the lead with a ninth minute penalty and kept the Georgians penned back with some top class kicking from the hand. But the Georgians eventually got on top in the scrum and got back in contention when lock Gagui Margvelashvili was out through by his No.8 Mikheili Shioshvili to score a try converted by full-back Luka Takaishvili to make it 8-7 after 16 minutes. Ireland's wooden spoon finish in the Six Nations had a lot to do with slack defending and Georgia made them pay on the half hour when scrum-half Giorgi Spanderashvili escaped the clutches of five tackles to score from a tapped penalty outside the 22, with Takaishvili cutting the gap to 15-14 with the conversion. Ireland, who had 13 missed tackles to Georgia's three by the break, got their defence sorted and Wood extended the lead with a penalty before Irish tighthead Alex Mullan and Georgian loosehead Bachuki Baratashvili were binned by French referee Jeremy Rozier after repeated reset scrums. Ireland had a chance to extend the lead before the break but amid confusion among the officials over timekeeping, Wood's rushed effort missed the target and they had to settle for 18-14 at the break. Farrell started the second half the same as the first, scoring in the right corner after another good period of sustained pressure, but they were again caught napping at the other end as scrum-half Spanderashvili again tapped and scored from close range to cut the gap to 23-21. But Ireland refused to be rattled and Boyne RFC product Mahon Ronan displayed great strength for the lock to score beside the posts, with Wood's conversion making it 30-21 as Ireland secured the bonus point. Impressive full-back Charlie Molony made the game safe when he stepped inside down the left to score a fine try and make the game safe at 35-21 in the final quarter against a Georgian side who had ten of the side which stretched them all the way in last year's tournament in South Africa.
