Environmental activists disrupt road widening work in Mysuru, seek assurance on tree park
The activists, who began their demonstration at around 10 a.m. on Thursday, thwarted the road widening works until 3 p.m., and demanded an assurance from the authorities that tree planting would be taken up on the roadside, apart from the establishment of a park comprising 400 trees.
Following the opposition, Mysore City Corporation (MCC) officials shared relevant documents and gave a written assurance to the activists that tree replanting on the road would be taken up within six months, according to Kamal Gopinath, president, Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Mysuru.
There were activists from nine organisations, including Mr. Gopinath, state president and general secretary of 'Parisarakkagi Naavu' A.T. Ramaswamy and Parashurame Gowda respectively, members of 'Parisara Balaga', Clean Mysore Foundation, and Dalit Panthers Association, among others.
The activists also demanded that traffic surveys and analyses, if undertaken for the widening and development of the road, be released. A PUCL release said the authorities have given a written assurance stating that the widening works would be completed within six months, and as many as 150 saplings will be planted on the right and left pathways, apart from the middle meridian of the new road.
The widening work is being undertaken at a cost of ₹20 crores, and a sum of ₹50 lakhs has already been released.
The MCC team also released the Traffic Survey and Analysis report, which was prepared before the trees were cut down in April. Senior forest department officials who apprised themselves of the demands of the activists, said that land for the proposed tree park was to be identified and provided by the MCC, though the latter claimed that it was the responsibility of the forest department. The activists said they would vigorously pursue the demand for a tree park with the government and the forest department in the days ahead.

The Supreme Court on Friday (July 4, 2025) refused a plea by a National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2025 exam candidate to 'correct' the final answer key in accordance with the authoritative National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) standards and declare results afresh. A Bench of Justices PS Narasimha and R. Mahadevan dismissed the plea made by Shivam Gandhi Raina, represented by senior advocate R. Balasubramanium and advocate Sriram Parakkat, for an interim stay on the commencement or continuation of the counselling process. Noting that a similar petition to stay the NEET-UG answer key and results had come up and been dismissed a few days back, the apex court said it would not 'interfere in an national exam, putting the lives and careers of thousands of students at risk'. When Mr. Balasubramanium pointed out that the top court had intervened in previous years when answer keys were found to be wrong in multiple choice questions, the Bench noted that a committee of experts had been constituted in the aftermath of such judicial interventions to reform the question system. 'We cannot tackle individual grievances like this,' Justice Narasimha remarked. The petition alleged the violation of Articles 14 and 21A due to errors in the answer key. It said both the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) had failed to 'rectify demonstrably incorrect answers in the provisional as well as the final answer key, despite the submission of well-founded objections supported by authoritative academic material, thereby resulting in a gross miscarriage of justice and an unconstitutional deprivation of marks that critically impact merit and career prospects of the petitioner'. The petition referred to how the provisional answer key had three errors, specifically in questions 52, 136 (Code 47), and 140 (Code 45). 'Without delay on June 4, the petitioner submitted detailed objections with supporting evidence, including NCERT Biology, conclusively establishing that the correct answers had been erroneously marked by the NTA and MCC. However, despite these well-founded objections, the final answer key is published and the result is declared on June 14, retaining the incorrect answer for Q.136 (Code 47),' the petition pointed out.

Devegowda assures drinking water supply to Mysuru villages and new layouts
Mysuru: Chamundeshwari MLA GT Devegowda on Thursday assured to ease the drinking water crisis by supplying water from the Cauvery River to villages and new layouts developed in Siddalingapura and Naganahalli on the outskirts of Mysuru. He was speaking after launching work for the construction of two overhead tanks with capacities of 1.8 lakh litres and 1.1 lakh litres at Belavadi village in Mysuru taluk, which is part of the Chamundeshwari segment. "The state govt has sanctioned Rs 30 crore for the project. Works will be completed soon," he said. "The two projects will ease the drinking woes of Siddalingapura, KR Mill, Belavetta, Old Kesare, Kamanakerehundi, Naganahalli, Shyadanahalli, Lakshmipura, Kalasthawadi villages, and the newly developed layouts in the area. Approval to ease drinking water problems of various villages in the Chamundeshwari assembly segment will be taken up at the next Mysuru Development Authority meeting," he stated. He said that the construction of underground drainage and other works have been taken up at a cost of Rs 8 crore at Belavetta. When local farmers complained about sewage water from stormwater drains from Old Kesare affecting agricultural activities, the MLA called MCC commissioner Syed Asif Tanveer and asked him to resolve the issue. He also assured the completion of skywalks and bus shelters at Belevatta by discussing with National Highways Authority of India officials.
