6 ways effective leaders think like astronauts

I've served the NASA space program for many years as an adviser, research scientist, flight surgeon—and astronaut. My career has encompassed both in-flight and non-flight contributions to NASA, supporting space missions, space medicine, and research in advancing human space flight.
Space exploration encompasses a fair amount of uncertainty by nature. The space program's early days were fraught with a number of crew losses, including the Apollo 1 mission, and the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle missions. The challenges of space flight were on full display during the Apollo 13 crew's near-disastrous mission on the way to the moon in 1970. We all know those infamous words: 'Houston, we have a problem.' But the determination of a mission control team led by flight director Gene Kranz—marked by the phrase 'failure is not an option'—ended in a successful mission.
Anyone, though, can pick up smart leadership lessons from space travel, even if you're not headed to the moon yourself. Here's how the best leaders think like astronauts.
Recognize The Power of Vision
Every great leader starts with a vision. Whether you are leading a company, a team, or a personal endeavor, the ability to see beyond present circumstances and chart a course for the future is what separates extraordinary leaders from the rest.
When I first dreamed of becoming an astronaut, I had no road map. The road ahead was full of uncertainty, doubts, and obstacles. After determining that doctors were needed in the space program, my pathway was set. My goal was to become a physician with the knowledge and skills to work in space. But I learned early on that it's not about having all the answers—it's about having the courage to pursue a vision, adapt to challenges, and inspire others along the way. In business, just as in space exploration, those who succeed are the ones who remain focused on their mission despite adversity.
Turn the Vision into a Mission
The mark of a good leader is their ability to transform the vision into tangible goals and objectives for the mission. We accomplish this at NASA through extensive training and mission preparation. The flight crew and mission support team dedicate countless hours to training in simulators and facilities, preparing for every scenario, whether it's smooth sailing or unforeseen challenges. They focus on identifying the critical factors for success, then conduct 'nominal' training for ideal outcomes and 'off-nominal' training to tackle potential setbacks.
We have a saying in the Astronaut Corps: 'Fly as you train.' Training reflects conditions similar to those of the mission so we're best prepared for the unexpected. Once those conditions are clear, we set high expectations to drive high performance.
People and organizations can achieve amazing things when they know what's expected of them. The most successful leaders embrace challenges, set high expectations, remain adaptable, and focus on the greater impact of their work.
Let High Expectations Drive High Performance
Leaders who expect mediocrity will get just that, while those who challenge their teams to push beyond limits foster excellence.
On my second flight, STS–63 in February 1995, we had multiple challenges. During my spacewalk, my fellow crew member and I experienced unexpected extreme temperatures of -165°F at orbital night and +200°F during the day, which exceeded the temperature capability of the space suit. There were other malfunctions on the mission, like issues with critical equipment on the spacecraft that almost canceled our rendezvous with the Russian space station.
NASA's training program assumes that astronauts must be prepared for the unknown. The same principle applies in business. Leaders must prepare their teams for challenges that may not yet exist, setting expectations that encourage innovation, accountability, and excellence.
If you want to see growth in your organization, ask yourself: Are you setting high-enough expectations? Are you fostering a culture where your team is encouraged to reach beyond what they believe is possible? Success is often the result of leaders who challenge their teams to think bigger, work harder, and embrace bold ideas.
Buckle into Resilience in Challenging Times
One of the most valuable leadership lessons is understanding that failure is not the enemy—complacency is. Some of the best business leaders I have met share one trait: they're not afraid of failing. They see failure as feedback, as a necessary component of growth.
I also had moments of uncertainty during my first flight—STS-55 in April 1993. As we were about to launch, one of the three main engines of the Space Shuttle Columbia failed 2.5 seconds before liftoff. Fortunately, the safety system worked, cutting the fuel to the engine while simultaneously putting out the ensuing fire. This event certainly got my attention, as we say when things don't go well. I'm lucky to be here today.
During my astronaut training and missions, I faced countless setbacks. Physical demands of endless hours of spacewalk training underwater in the neutral buoyancy facility pushed me to my limits, technical challenges of microgravity simulation forced me to rethink strategies, and high-stakes flight simulations that exposed weaknesses I needed to improve. Had I let failure define me, rather than energize me, I would never have made it to space.
Resilience is just as crucial for leadership in life and business. Markets change, competitors arise, and setbacks occur. The best leaders are those who are resilient and thrive to adapt, learn, and continue forward with an unwavering commitment to their goals.
Maintain Confidence in the Face of Adversity
Great leaders possess both confidence and humility. Confidence allows you to make bold decisions, take risks, and lead with conviction. But humility ensures that you remain open to new ideas, feedback, and growth.
In my career at NASA, in venture capital, and as an entrepreneur, I've worked with some of the most brilliant minds in science, engineering, and business. The leaders who stand out are those who strongly believe in their abilities yet understand they don't have all the answers. They surround themselves with talented individuals, listen more than they speak, and remain adaptable in the face of change.
In your leadership journey, have the confidence to make difficult decisions and the humility to recognize that leadership is a lifelong learning process.
Build a Legacy of Impact
After my time at NASA, I joined SpaceHab as an SVP and chief medical officer, contributing to one of the pioneering companies in commercial spaceflight. In 2002, I founded a venture capital firm focused on telemedicine and healthcare technologies. Later, I founded the Harris Foundation and Institute, which has been involved in math and science education for over 25 years.
Leadership is not just about personal success—it's about the impact you leave behind. For business leaders, this means looking beyond profit margins and quarterly results. It means fostering a culture where employees feel valued, innovation thrives, and measuring success by long-term impact rather than short-term gains.
Ask yourself: How do you envision the legacy you wish to leave as a leader? Are you investing in people? Are you creating a vision that extends beyond yourself?
Leadership lessons from space
Leadership is a journey of vision, mission, expectation, resilience, and confidence. The most successful leaders embrace challenges, set high expectations, remain adaptable, and focus on the greater impact of their work. As you lead your organization, your team, or even your own personal ambitions, remember that the key to success lies not in avoiding obstacles and uncertainty, but in using them as stepping stones to greater achievements.

The 'big, beautiful bill' recently signed into law enacted a number of tax, spending and regulatory measures. President Trump and his supporters regard the new law as a triumph. Trump's enemies not so much. NASA spending measures are tucked inside the bill that can best be described as ugly, or at the very least ill-advised. As Gizmodo reported, the Trump budget proposal phased out the Space Launch System heavy lift launcher and Orion spacecraft and cancelled the Lunar Gateway space station. After the Artemis III mission, the first crewed lunar landing in decades, NASA would opt for more commercial and sustainable alternatives to maintain a moon exploration campaign. The approach was favored by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and former NASA administrator nominee Jared Isaacman. Congress chose to ignore the administration's recommendations in favor of a more traditional approach. According to Gizmodo, '$2.6 billion would go toward fully funding Gateway, $4.1 billion would support [Space Launch System], and $20 million would go to the development of Orion.' At least until Artemis V, the return to the moon will follow the plan first set out during the first Trump presidency. The plan was proposed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), chair of the Senate Commerce Committee. There are two possible reasons for this divergence between the White House and Congress. The cynical explanation is that the Space Launch System, for all of its huge costs, provides a lot of jobs and money in key states and congressional districts. If the project goes away, the jobs and money go away. The less cynical possibility is that although Congress may be in favor of a commercial approach to the moon and Mars in theory, it is skeptical that it will happen in a timely fashion. The long time the Commercial Crew took to get off the ground may be informing this, as is the trouble SpaceX's Starship has been having not blowing up. Whatever the reason for preserving the Space Launch System, the Orion and the Lunar Gateway, — and it may be a combination of the two suggested reasons — it seems to be a step backward in the opening to human civilization of the moon, Mars and beyond. The Space Launch System is simply too expensive to be the centerpiece of an effective and sustainable program to send humans beyond low Earth orbit. Fortunately, the bill is not the end of the story where NASA funding is concerned. Congressional appropriators still have to round out the space agency's spending bill for the next fiscal year. Congress can not only restore some of the draconian cuts that the White House has proposed for NASA's science programs, but it can also start the end-to-end commercial lunar initiative first discussed in a recent piece in Ars Technica. Trump has two things on his plate that he should take care of sooner rather than later. First, he needs to reconstitute the National Space Council with Vice President JD Vance at its head. The Space Council will provide a central point for space policy going forward. Trump has named Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy as interim NASA administrator. Duffy is an able man with political experience and an expressed interest in space. However, he will be spread thin running both the Department of Transportation and the space agency. Trump has to nominate a permanent NASA administrator. The deep-sixing of his previous nomination of billionaire private space traveler Jared Isaacman was an incredible act of self-sabotage that has hurt NASA and Trump's own space policy. Unfortunately, Trump doubled down with an attack on Isaacman in a social media rant against Musk, who had recommended him. Without using Isaacman's name, Trump wrote that Musk 'asked that one of his close friends run NASA.' He said he initially thought the friend was 'very good,' but 'was surprised to learn that he was a blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before.' He added, 'I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon's corporate life.' As Space News notes, Isaacman is a moderate Republican who donated to both parties, a common practice for businessmen (including Trump when he was in the private sector). His ties to Musk derive from the fact that SpaceX is the only company that can provide private crewed spaceflight services. Why Trump would post such claims is open to speculation. Likely he is being lied to by staffers who dislike Musk. If the president cannot bring himself to rectify his mistake of withdrawing Isaacman's nomination, he needs to name a suitable replacement, and the sooner the better. Then Congress should fast track that person's confirmation so that he or she can start to revitalize NASA as a world-class space agency. America's future as a space power depends on it. Mark R. Firefly Aerospace has filed for an initial public offering on the Nasdaq under the ticker 'FLY,' aiming to turn its recent momentum into capital for expansion. The Texas-based space and defense company made headlines in March 2025 with the successful lunar landing of its Blue Ghost lander. The mission, part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, marked the first time a commercial vehicle landed and operated on the Moon for over 14 days. Sound Financials and Rising Revenue The company's revenue jumped 6x to $55.9 million in the most recent year. More importantly, Firefly holds a $1.1 billion contract backlog across launch and lunar services. That includes work with NASA, Lockheed Martin (LMT), and Northrop Grumman (NOC), giving it a level of revenue visibility that many early-stage aerospace firms lack. Firefly's main launch vehicle, the Alpha rocket, has experienced a few hiccups since its debut in 2021. The rocket reached operational status in 2023 and has since completed missions for NASA and other commercial customers. Alpha's design features carbon composite materials and proprietary engine technology. It can carry up to 1,030 kg to low Earth orbit. As of April 2025, Alpha has six launches under its belt, with four experiencing partial or full failure. Despite that, Firefly is increasing production to support rideshare and dedicated launches. The company is also developing a medium-lift rocket called Eclipse in partnership with Northrop Grumman, which invested $50 million in May 2025. Eclipse is expected to carry 16,300 kg to low Earth orbit and 3,200 kg to geosynchronous transfer orbit. It uses upgraded versions of Alpha's propulsion systems and components from Northrop's Antares program. The first launch is targeted for 2026. Not Competing Directly with SpaceX Firefly operates in the small to medium payload segment, a part of the market that remains less crowded than heavy-lift. Its backlog suggests strong demand, while the Blue Ghost mission demonstrated its ability to deliver complex government payloads on time. Firefly is not directly competing with larger players like SpaceX in the mega-constellation or heavy-lift categories. Still, it does offer bundled services including launch, lunar delivery, and orbital support. The FLY IPO will be one to watch for investors looking for exposure to commercial space firms with real revenue, government contracts, and a proven track record in both launch and lunar missions. By most measures, osteopathic medicine is a profession in its prime. The number of doctors of osteopathic medicine, or D.O.s, has grown 70 percent in the last decade and is expected to continue expanding. More than a quarter of all medical students in the United States are training to become D.O.s, thanks in part to limited slots in traditional medical schools and ever-growing openings at osteopathic schools (14 campuses have opened in the last five years). And in recent years, the field has gained prestige as its doctors have risen to the highest medical posts in the country: leading top medical systems, overseeing NASA's medical team, running the most followed medical page on social media and, during the last three administrations, overseeing the medical care of the president of the United States. 'I do think we are — I don't want to say infiltrating — but we are everywhere,' said Dr. Teresa A. Hubka, the president of the American Osteopathic Association. Yet the changing face of medicine has largely been invisible to the public. Beyond vague notions that D.O.s are more holistic, or stereotypes that they were rejected from traditional medical schools, very few patients know how a D.O.'s training might shape their health care. One of the most commonly searched questions on Google about D.O.s, who have had full rights to practice medicine in the United States since 1973, is whether they are physicians. Over the course of Dr. Christina Weaver's career as an osteopathic doctor, she has been mistaken for a 'bone doctor' (orthopedist), a homeopath (an alternative healer with no medical degree) and a chiropractor (also no medical degree).
