Amid Swachh success, most sanitation workers work without raincoats

Bhopal: In Bhopal, the jubilation of achieving second place nationally in the Swachh Survekshan 2025 has been dampened by concerns over inadequate provision of essential equipment to sanitation workers. The celebration amongst officials stands in stark contrast to the situation of the city's 8,000 sanitation workers, most of whom continue to work through heavy rains without proper protection. Despite the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) placing an order worth Rs 50 lakh for raincoats in July 2024, the implementation remains incomplete after a year. "I haven't received a raincoat in over a year," said Kalla, who works in Ward 47. In Ward 43, Gullu Soni shared that his raincoat quickly became unusable from grime and daily wear. Fellow worker Rakesh, also in Ward 43, reported that raincoats had reached the zone office, but were still "awaiting distribution." Meanwhile, Rahul from Ward 69 took pride in Bhopal's national honour but admitted he was still working without a raincoat. This situation highlights a significant disparity: while Bhopal achieves recognition for its sanitation standards, the essential workers responsible for this achievement lack basic protective equipment. In the areas that contributed to the city's high ranking, the reality of workers performing their duties without proper gear contradicts the celebratory atmosphere. Despite Bhopal's improved standing in official assessments, sanitation workers persist in their duties of maintaining drains and streets with limited resources. When contacted BMC officials were in Delhi and unreachable.

From City of Lakes to Clean City: Bhopal Ranked Second in Swachh Survey

Bhopal: India's fresh batch of clean cities has made its mark, with a new lineup emerging as top contenders in the 'Swachh Shehar' charts. The rankings this year was shaped by a key structural change—previous champions like Indore were shifted into a separate League, allowing other cities a chance to rise. Among these, Bhopal climbed to second place nationally, missing the top spot by just 12 points. Indore has held that position for seven straight years, the tag of India's cleanest city. Bhopal's performance this year proves it's not far behind. "This achievement is a result of the cooperation and awareness of the dedicated employees of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Safai Mitras, officials, and above all, the people of Bhopal," said Bhopal mayor Malti Rai. Out of maximum 12,500 score, Bhopal got 12067. Indore scored 12,080 points out of 12,500 in Swachh Survekshan 2025. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission , Bhopal has attained recognition as India's second cleanest city amongst municipalities with populations exceeding 10 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The award ceremony took place on Thursday at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the honour to MP Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai, and BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Bhopal secured a 7-Star ranking in the "Garbage-Free City" category while maintaining its status as India's cleanest state capital and Water+ city status. The assessment, conducted under the theme "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," saw Bhopal Municipal Corporation achieve 9,567 points out of 10,000 in Swachh Survekshan parameters, alongside a perfect 2,500 in certification, totalling 12,067 out of 12,500. This performance positioned Bhopal as second nationally and first in the state for cities exceeding 10 lakh population. BMC achieved this distinction through systematic implementation of cleanliness activities, emphasising waste reduction, infrastructure enhancement and waste processing. The previous year witnessed substantial improvements in garbage management systems, said a BMC press statement on Thursday. *** Urban Local Body: Bhopal Population Category: Million Plus Cities (>10 lakh population) State Rank: 1 (Top in Madhya Pradesh) National Rank: 2 (Second Cleanest City in India in its category) Performance Indicators Indicator Score Insights Door-to-Door Collection 100% Full coverage—reflects strong execution Source Segregation 95% High public participation in waste sorting Waste Processing 100% All collected waste is scientifically treated Garbage Free City (GFC) 7-Star Highest possible rating—shows systemic waste management success ODF Status Water+ Indicates advanced sanitation infrastructure, beyond basic ODF levels Summary Bhopal's profile reflects top-tier urban cleanliness and waste management: The city not only collects and processes 100% of its waste, but also demonstrates high segregation at source, a critical behavior-driven metric. Achieving 7-Star Garbage Free City status places Bhopal in an elite category, and the Water+ certification shows excellence in liquid waste and sanitation *** Bhopal's Swachh Survekshan Performance in last two surveys Bhopal has significantly improved its national ranking, moving from 5th to 2nd position in the category for cities with populations over 1 lakh, and has claimed the 1st position in Madhya Pradesh. The city maintained a perfect score of 100% in several key areas, including Door-to-Door Waste Collection, Waste Generation vs Processing, and the Cleanliness of Water Bodies. There was a notable drop in the remediation of dumpsites, where the score fell from 100% to 0%, despite improvements in the cleanliness of public toilets, which increased from 97% to 100%.

‘SATHEE' transforms coaching for govt students in Punjab

Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Govt of India, successfully implemented its flagship initiative SATHEE (Self-Assessment Test and Help for Entrance Exams) across 569 govt non–School of Eminence (non-SOE) institutions in Punjab during the last academic year. SATHEE is a free, technology-driven educational platform developed by IIT Kanpur to democratise access to quality coaching for entrance exams such as JEE and NEET. The initiative already demonstrated a significant academic impact in Punjab. The number of students qualifying for JEE Main increased from 49 in 2024 to 85 in 2025, while the number of NEET qualifiers rose from 335 in 2024 to 497 in 2025—a remarkable improvement within just one academic year. Teachers report that many students who earlier relied on private tuition are now fully dependent on SATHEE for structured coaching and mentorship. Prof Amey Karkare, project in-charge of SATHEE at IIT Kanpur, said, "Through this initiative, we are proving that when given the right tools and guidance, students from all backgrounds can rise to their fullest potential. The success in Punjab is a testimony to what focused, inclusive interventions can achieve." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Tailored for students from economically weaker backgrounds, SATHEE offers a full suite of academic resources—recorded and live lectures by expert faculty, daily practice problems, mock tests, and motivational sessions by mentors from IITs and AIIMS. Its core strength lies in its self-assessment tools, enabling students to evaluate their progress and prepare more effectively.
