Person dies after eating ready meal sold at Tesco and Aldi in bacteria outbreak
A person has died after eating a ready meal amid an listeriosis outbreak that has forced a company to recall dozens of meals. A person has died after eating a ready meal following a potentially deadly listeriosis outbreak affected products sold at major supermarkets, including Tesco and Aldi. Days after falling ill from eating a contaminated ready meal in Ireland, an adult has died. The death relates to a series of severe cases of listeriosis - a potentially deadly infection caused by the listeria bacteria, reports the Mirror. Amid growing concerns for public safety, supermarket bosses have scrambled to remove at risk dishes on supermarket shelves. A range of ready meals by the brand Ballymaguire Foods, who sell products at both Aldi and Tesco in Ireland, have been affected. It is not clear which ready meal the person ate before they tragically died. Dozens of products by the food company have been included in a long list of recalled items. The Health Service Executive confirmed this death is currently under investigation but further details cannot be shared due to patient privacy. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said it was investigating nine cases following an "extensive outbreak". Dozens of meals have been recalled including items from Clean Cut, Good Food, Signature Taste, SuperValu, and Tesco Meals. Some of the recalled meals include Tesco Meals Made Easy Beef Lasagne, Clean Cut Chicken Spice Bag, Clean Cut Butter Chicken, Good Food Locally Sourced Mac & Cheese and SuperValu Cottage Pie. In a statement, The HSE said: "A voluntary precautionary food recall of ready-to-heat meals is underway due to a link with the outbreak. "The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been notified of and is investigating the death of an adult with confirmed listeriosis. "To ensure medical confidentiality, no further information on this patient can be disclosed." Ballymaguire Foods has displayed point of sale notices in all retail stores that are selling these products - explaining why the products are being recalled and tell them what customers should do if they have bought the products. People who have bought these items have been advised to not eat them and instead return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. The Listeria infection is an illness that can be spread through food and particularly impact older, pregnant and vulnerable people and even death. The first symptoms of listeriosis can be similar to other gastro illnesses, including a high temperature, chills, aches and pains, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Pregnant women may feel their baby moving less than normal, or could develop a stomach ache. It can take between one and 70 days to develop symptoms of listeriosis after eating contaminated food, so it is not always obvious where the bacteria has been picked up. Last year there were seven reported listeriosis outbreaks investigated in England and Wales, linked to contaminated smoked fish, garlic sausage and pre-packed sandwiches. One killed in Listeria outbreak sparking urgent recall on supermarket ready meal
An 'extensive outbreak' of a deadly bacteria has killed one person in Ireland. There are nine confirmed cases of listeria as of yesterday, linked to a food recall affecting over 141 ready-to-heat meals. The 'voluntary precautionary recall' linked to the outbreak comes from one food manufacturer, Ballymaguire Foods, who provide for Tesco, Aldi, and others across Ireland. A range of chicken curries, lasagnes, bolognaises, pasta bakes, cottage pies, and chow mein dishes are all affected by the recall. The full list of recalled products can be viewed here. Consumers have been warned the ready meals may be contaminated with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis is an infection caused by the listeria monocytogenes, usually from eating contaminated food. Listeria monocytogenes infection, or listeriosis, can present as mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms. These include vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea. Severe infections can cause serious complications in rare cases. Pregnant women, babies, the elderly and people with weakened immune symptoms are more vulnerable to infections. It takes on average three weeks for symptoms to appear, but that can range from three to 70 days. The country's Food Safety Authority is investigating the outbreak. The Health Service Executive's Health Protection Surveillance Centre is also looking into the listeriosis death and is not releasing any more details about the patient. Ballymaguire Foods said in a statement they are recalling all the products produced at one of their facilities 'following the identification of listeria bacteria as part of a quality control check'. The company 'sincerely apologised' to customers and said they have suspended operations at the affected facility. They added: 'Incidents of this nature are extremely rare for us. We are treating it with the utmost seriousness and are working closely with all parties to manage the situation swiftly and responsibly.' Ready-meals which could be at risk include Tesco's Meals Made Easy, Irish Classics and Finest products. Tesco confirmed that the recall also impacts a small number of dishes in Northern Ireland. More Trending They added: 'We're sorry for any inconvenience caused and will issue a full refund to customers who have purchased these products when they return them to their local store.' Aldi's Specially Selected and Inspired Cuisine ranges are also being recalled, alongside a host of other products associated with Irish supermarket brands. Retailers have been instructed to take these implicated ready meals off the shelf, and display recall notices at the point of sale. The Food Safety Authority has also advised caterers not to use these products. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Person dies after 'extensive outbreak' of listeriosis as over 200 food products recalled
One person has died after an "extensive outbreak" of listeriosis, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has confirmed. It comes after the recall of 201 ready meal products produced by Ballymaguire Foods due to the possible presence of listeria bacteria. Advertisement A National Outbreak Control team has been deployed to investigate, and a voluntary precautionary recall of certain ready-to-heat meals is underway, due to a link with the outbreak of the bacterial infection. Nine confirmed cases of listeriosis have been identified, as of Tuesday. It has been confirmed the deceased is an adult, but no other details are being released, to ensure medical confidentiality. The ready meal products were being sold in Aldi, Tesco, Supervalu, Centra, and more. The symptoms of listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average three weeks but can range between three and 70 days. Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated products and are advised to check their freezers for the implicated products and dispose of them. Some of the over 200 products included in the recall include: Tesco Finest Chicken Parmigiano; Tesco Finest Chicken Breast in a Mushroom and Madeira Sauce; Tesco Baby Potatoes with a Garlic & Herb Butter Suervalu Freshly Prepared Beef Lasagne; Suervalu Freshly Prepared Korean style chicken with noodles; Centra Chicken Curry; Centra Freshly Prepared Burger Dinner; Supervalu and Centra Food To Go Mash Potato; Aldi Specially Selected Spaghetti Bolognese; Aldi Inspired Cuisine Irish Cottage Pie.
