Russia's Pacific coast was rocked by multiple earthquakes on Sunday, triggering a tsunami warning. The most powerful, a 7.4 magnitude quake, hit the North Pacific Ocean just 144 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on July 20, 2025. The USGS has indicated there is a potential risk of tsunamis following this earthquake. This earthquake hit underwater in the North Pacific Ocean, 82 kilometers (51 mi) off the coast of Russia, 144 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Kamchatka, according to earthquakelist.org. The center of the tremors had a very shallow depth of 20 km. Shallow earthquakes usually have a larger impact than earthquakes deep in the Earth.Meanwhile, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck near the coast of the Kamchatka region in the far east of Russia on Sunday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said, as reported by news agency Reuters. The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), GFZ said. It initially reported a magnitude of 6.2 for the earthquake. There were no immediate reports of casualties.According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones, as they are closer to the surface, according to Volcano Discovery. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports.A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 6.6 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.2.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy (pop. 181,200), located 125 km from the epicenter; Yelizovo (pop. 40,700), 141 km away; Vilyuchinsk (pop. 25,200), 141 km away; and Paratunka (pop. 1,800), 151 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a warning for Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula after the two quakes. The larger quake was at a depth of 20 kilometers and was 144 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000, according to the US Geological Survey. A few minutes earlier, a quake with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded nearby.Following a large earthquake on the east coast of Russia, a tsunami watch was issued for the State of Hawaiʻi on Saturday. 'Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive in coastal areas even far from the epicenter,' stated the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. 'An investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.'According to emergency officials, if tsunami waves impact Hawaiʻi, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave is 2:43 a.m. HST on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
