Cemetery linked to Alluri's legacy faces fresh threats

Visakhapatnam: The archaeological site in Narsipatnam town in Anakapalli district has allegedly been encroached upon by a few individuals who are constructing commercial structures on the site, even though there is a court stay order for its protection.

The 46 cents of land was earmarked for a cemetery of British officers Scot Coward and Hyter, who were killed by the followers of revolutionary Alluri Sitarama Raju during the 1920s. However, the small piece of land remained untouched by the authorities until a decade ago, except for a few shops that came up on the land. Those shops were removed by the authorities when there was a proposal to widen the road.
Now, a few individuals have again started construction on the same land, prompting the Alluri Sitarama Raju Memorial Committee to file a petition with the legal services authority to protect the land.
Justice Shiaz Khan also visited the site 15 days ago and instructed the revenue, municipality, and archaeology departments to protect the land. However, the alleged apathy of the authorities has given room for the encroachers to raise the structures.
Interestingly, both British officers, Coward and Hyter, participated in World War I and were hailed by the British Army as fearless warriors. They were deployed to suppress the Manyam Pituri (tribal rebellion or Rampa rebellion) and were killed by the followers of Sitarama Raju at Damanapalli Ghat Road on September 24, 1922.
To bring their bodies to the Narsipatnam R and B Bungalow area, the then British collector Rutherford allegedly paid tax to Alluri Sitarama Raju, as there was no way to bring the bodies without the rebels' permission.
He cremated the bodies at the present site in survey no. 9, imposing a curfew in the entire 20 km area due to the decomposed state of the bodies and the fear of spreading plague.
The 100-year-old history lies in that cemetery, and the site is on one side of the main road in Narsipatnam town.

Now, the 46 cents of land have shrunk to only 19 cents due to encroachments and occupations. Even after the visit of Justice Khan, private individuals have started constructing shops, and municipal authorities have allegedly not taken any action to date.
The assistant director of the archeology department R Phalguna Rao, told TOI that he met with the district collector Vijaya Krishnan, who asked him to meet Narsipatnam RDO for further action.
"The graves of the British officers are part of the history of Alluri Sitarama Raju's fight against the British. The cemetery is a witness to Alluri's revolutionary movement in the area. Unfortunately, authorities are neglecting the history. The site should be handed over to the archaeology department to protect the century-old history," the Alluri Sitarama Raju Memorial Committee representative, PV Satyanarayana, told TOI.
"Now, the authorities are saying that only 19 cents out of 46 cents will be handed over to the archaeology department. Revenue officials should protect the govt lands, but they are saying this, which is improper on their part," he alleged.

2 drivers found dead in a parked car, CO poisoning suspected

Noida: Two cab drivers were found dead inside a parked car near National Institute of Biology in Sector 62 on Monday afternoon, with police suspecting carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death. The bodies of Sachin Sharma (27) and Lakshmi Shankar (50) — both residents of Khoda Colony in Ghaziabad — were discovered after family members broke the car's window. The families of the two drivers — friends for almost a decade — started looking for them after they did not return home on Sunday night. "They searched for them all night without success. Calls to Sachin's mobile phone went unanswered as well. Around 2pm on Monday, locals informed the family about Sachin's car parked near a private institution," a senior police officer told TOI. "After we broke the car's windows, we found both of them dead. There were no injury marks. We suspect they fell asleep with the AC running in the CNG car. When the fuel ran out, the AC would have switched off automatically, leading to carbon monoxide buildup inside the sealed vehicle," an investigating officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Fellow cab driver Ravi said both friends were known to drink heavily. "They probably consumed liquor inside the car with the AC on and fell into deep sleep. They might have tried to escape when the gas filled the car, but couldn't open the door," he said. A forensic team collected evidence from the scene, and sent both bodies for an autopsy. The families were yet to file any formal complaint till late on Monday evening. Police said they would wait for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death. "To piece together the sequence of events, we have started examining footage from CCTV cameras installed around the spot. We found they were good friends and their friendship was about a decade old. A lot of cab drivers park their cars along the roadside," an officer said. Amit Kakran, the SHO of Sector 58 police station, emphasised the dangers of sleeping in cars with the AC on. "This incident should serve as a warning. Sleeping in a closed car with AC running can be fatal due to carbon monoxide buildup. Always ensure proper ventilation, keep the windows slightly open, and use CO detectors if possible," he advised.

Seer forced to quit Chamarajanagar mutt over Muslim roots

Mysuru: A 22-year-old seer was forced to quit a mutt at Gundlupet taluka in Chamarajanagar district on Sunday after a section of villagers objected to his role, citing his religious status as a Muslim prior to taking Basava Deeksha. Nijalinga Swamiji, 22, had taken 'deeksha' five years ago and was named Nijalinga Swamiji. He had joined the year-old mutt as its new seer a-month-and-a-half ago. However, he was forced to quit after his status as a Muslim before taking Basava Deeksha came to light, with some devotees alleging that he had not informed them about his religion by birth during anointment. The seer in question, though, told TOI everyone knew about his pre- 'deeksha' religion as he never hid it. Chamarajanagar SP BT Kavita said no police complaint was registered in connection with the incident. The Swamiji, who hails from Kalaburagi district, is an ardent follower of 'vachanas' and 'sharanas'. After taking 'deeksha', he was involved in the propagation of 'vachanas' across the state. "One of the devotees at the mutt approached my guru to send a seer to the mutt, and in keeping with the Guru's wish, I joined. I was involved in spreading 'vachana's in the villages," the Swamiji said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More He further told TOI: "Recently, a boy came across my Aadhaar Card details, where my pre-Basava Deeksha name was mentioned. He informed the villagers about it and a section of villagers forced me to quit the mutt." "An ardent follower of Basavanna's principles, I was hurt by the incident as I took 'deeksha' to spread the 'vachana's that preach brotherhood. I am totally cut off from my pre- 'deeksha' religion," the Swamiji said, adding: "I was forced to quit the mutt on the ground that I didn't disclose my pre-Basava Deeksha religion, but everyone knows about my pre-Basava Deeksha religion. I never hid it."
