Sara Duterte urges alias Rene to file charges after recanting

GMA Network3 days ago
Vice President Sara Duterte has called on former Senate witness Michael Maurillo or alias Rene to file charges after he claimed that he was influenced to testify against her, former President Rodrigo Duterte, and detained pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
The Vice President made the remark Tuesday when asked in an interview in The Hague, Netherlands about her reaction that alias Rene took back his testimony against them.
"That is a very serious accusation and it should be answered clearly kung ano ba talaga ang nangyari (to get to the bottom of things)," Duterte said.
"Kung sa tingin ni alias Rene na dapat siya ay dapat mag-file din ng kaso, ay dapat na gawin niya din 'yun para nasasabi niya 'yung totoo sa loob ng korte at nakakasagot din ang maayos 'yung mga akusado sa loob din ng korte," she added.
(If alias Rene thinks that he should also file a case, then he should do that so that he can tell the truth in court and the accused can also answer the charges properly.)
Before his recantation, Rene testified before the Senate committee chaired by Senator Risa Hontiveros that he witnessed the Dutertes carrying firearms from Quiboloy's property.
Hontiveros on Wednesday filed separate cyber libel complaints with the Department of Justice (DOJ) against a lawyer, five social media personalities, and alias Rene.
This came Rene, in a video posted on Facebook, alleged that he was paid by Hontiveros to speak lies against Quiboloy and the Dutertes.
The senator, in return, called the video "fake news" and "witness tampering" as she asserted that the former Senate witness was not coerced to testify in the hearing.
Sara also alleged that Rene had interactions with supposed witnesses in the case of her father Rodrigo before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
"Nabasa ko na 'yung affidavit niya bago pa man siya lumabas publicly. In fact, mayroong mga nakalagay doon na nakasama niya ang mga witnesses kuno ng ICC doon sa isang bahay kung saan siya pinatira ni Senator Hontiveros," she said.
(I have read his affidavit even before he went public. In fact, there were some things written there, that he was put in a house with the supposed witnesses of the ICC, by Senator Hontiveros.)
She also said the alleged false testimony should be a cause of concern.
"In fact, sinabihan ko din ang lawyer ni President Duterte noon na mayroon nga gan'un na statement 'yung witness against Pastor Quiboloy na ngayon ay nagsasabi na hindi totoo 'yung mga sinabi niya. Sinabi niya na nakasama niya sa tirahan ang mga witnesses ng ICC," Duterte added.
(In fact, I also told President Duterte's lawyer that the witness against Pastor Quiboloy had made such a statement and now he is saying that what he said was not true. He said the ICC witnesses were with him in a house.)
Last week, Hontiveros filed a complaint with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against Rene and the Pagtanggol Valiente social media account, which posted his videos.
She also asked the NBI to investigate the individuals behind Pagtanggol Valiente, noting that it was created on the day after Maurillo's last message to the senator's camp asking for help, as well as other vloggers.
Curious Risa
Meanwhile, Hontiveros questioned how the Vice President got hold of Rene's affidavit before his video was published on social media.
"I am also very very curious kung paano nakuha ni VP Sara ang salaysay ni Michael ahead of his fake news video (I am also very very curious how VP Sara got a copy of Michael's ahead of his fake news video)," the senator said in a statement.
She also maintained her stance that the claims Rene made in a video were lies.
"I stand by the statements I made earlier na pawang kasinungalingan ang nasa video (I stand by statements I made earlier that everything claimed in the video is false). If Michael has executed a new affidavit containing lies about me and the victim survivors of Quiboloy, then in my opinion this opens him up to perjury in addition to the case I filed today," Hontiveros added. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Palace on Alan Cayetano's Duterte house arrest resolution: 'Noted'

''Noted.'' This was the response of Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro when asked for comment on the resolution filed by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano calling the Philippine government to push for the interim release of former president Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC). The senator also urged the administration to enter into an agreement to place Duterte under house arrest at the Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands. According to Castro, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin ''Boying'' Remulla already made a remark about the request for interim release. ''Nagsalita na po ang SOJ Boying Remulla patungkol po sa interim release. At kung may ganiyan pong mga suggestions mula kay Senator Alan Cayetano, noted,'' she said during Friday's briefing. Manila Representative Bienvenido Abante, who chaired the House committee on human rights in the 19th Congress, expressed no objection to the proposed Senate resolution saying it may have no impact at all. "The resolution does not have any bearing at all dahil 'yung resolution naman is asking the Philippine government, di ba? And the request should come from the Philippine government kung papagamit nila 'yung ating embassy sa Netherlands para 'yung ating dating Pangulo ay doon siya mag-stay," Abante told reporters in an online interview. "I believe that Sen. Allan would have the right to file any resolution. Yet sa akin, I don't think there is any bearing on that as far as the ICC is concerned," he added. The legislator said there is no assurance yet if the Philippine government will heed the resolution in case it is adopted by the Senate. But even if the government does, Abante, said, it is also unknown what action the International Criminal Court will take on the matter. "Well, it remains to be seen kung 'yan ay aprubahan ng ating pamahalaan. As far as I'm concerned, kahit na po siguro ang ating pamahalaan ay mag-request sa Netherlands about that, I do not know if the ICC would listen sapagkat palagay ko mukhang hindi na yata pinakinggan 'yung petition ng kampo ni dating pangulo na siya ay ilagay sa isang o itangkilik ng ibang bansa. So kung 'yan ang nangyari, I don't think that the ICC would also try to accommodate him on that," Abante explained. He reiterated that he has no objection to the resolution especially if it concerns the health of the former president. "I do not have any problem with that actually. If the government will be able to justify that resolution, baka maaari. Sa akin, medyo okay na rin kung, halimbawa, he'll be staying at the embassy ng Pilipinas for health consideration. Again, gusto ko lang sabihin na I do not know if the ICC would actually listen. But sa akin, walang problema yon," he said. "Siguro naman, I think the Philippine Embassy also has, perhaps, a mandate to help the Filipino abroad on that consideration. Palagay ko naman, titingnan din maigi ng ating embahada ang health condition ng ating dating Pangulo because that would be their concern," Abante added. ACT Teachers Party-list Rep Antonio Tinio, for his part, expressed belief that Cayetano's proposal cannot be implemented because the Philippines is no longer a party to the Rome Statute. "The proposal to have Duterte detained in the Philippine embassy in The Hague is a non-starter, since the ICC will only consider interim release to a member state. Too bad for him now, since Duterte himself caused the Philippines to withdraw from the ICC. Or does the senator expect special treatment for Duterte from the ICC? In which case it's not going to happen," Tinio said in a statement. "Yet another senator playing to the gallery, telling Duterte supporters what they want to hear to rally the faithful and keep them agitated," he added. Duterte was arrested in the Philippines by local authorities on March 11, based on a warrant of arrest issued by the ICC. He is currently detained in the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague. His daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, earlier said that the former president has lost a lot of weight since his detention in The Hague, describing him now as 'skin and bones.' She also said that her father has asked that his remains be cremated should he pass away while detained in The Hague.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Man arrested for sexual abuse of minor niece —NBI

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday announced the arrest of an individual over the sexual abuse of his minor niece in Rizal. Agent-in-charge Atty. Czar Eric Niqui said the subject had been sexually abusing the victim since she was 7 years old. The victim is now 14 years old. 'Meron pong instances kasi na nag-umpisa ito nung namatay 'yung tatay nung ating complainant and it so happened na 'yung ating subject ay naatasang mag-alaga sa mga bata na anak nitong complainant,' he said in a media briefing. (There were instances because this started when the father of our complainant died, and it so happened that our subject was assigned to take care of the children of this complainant.) 'At doon sa pagkakataon na iyon ay kanyang inumpisahang gahasain at gawan ng mali at malaswa itong bata,' he added. (At that point, he started sexually abusing and doing bad things to this child.) He said the man would threaten the victim that he would kill their family if she told anyone what was happening. However, the victim opened up to her mother about what was being done to her when the mother told the victim that she will be brought to her grandmother. 'This prompted the victim na sumigaw at sabihin na may nangyayari sa kanya doon sa bahay ng kanyang lola. At doon na nalaman ng complainant kung paano nag umpisa at nag tuloy 'yung panggagahasa sa kanyang anak,' Niqui said. (This prompted the victim to scream and tell her what was happening at the house of her grandmother. It was then that the complainant found out how the sexual abuse started and continued.) Niqui said the man underwent inquest proceedings for violation of Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, as amended. The NBI also referred to the inquest prosecutor to conduct a preliminary investigation on the past incidents of sexual abuse against the victim.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Comelec faces complaint for ‘system interference' in 2025 polls

A group of religious, former officials, and civil society organizations on Thursday filed a complaint against Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairperson George Garcia and other officials over their alleged interference with the software used in the 2025 Philippine elections. Among the 16 complainants were lawyer Alex Lacson, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, Kidapawan Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, former Comelec Commissioner Augusto Lagman, former Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines president Franklin Ysaac, and Isabela Vice Mayor Harold Respicio. Aside from Garcia, six Comelec commissioners and three other people were named respondents. They face 110,000 counts of system interference, representing the 110,000 ACMs used in the 2025 elections. They were also charged with another 55,874,700 counts of system interference, representing the 55,874,700 votes they consolidated in Data Center 3. The complainants said the respondents allegedly violated Paragraph 4, Section 4 of the Cybercrime Prevention Act. This states that system interference is the 'intentional alteration or reckless hindering or interference with the functioning of a computer or computer network, by inputting, transmitting, deleting, deteriorating, altering, or suppressing computer data or program, electronic document, or electronic data message, without right or authority.' The complaint filed before the National Bureau of Investigation alleged that Comelec substituted the certified and audited software program in the Automated Counting Machines (ACMs) used in the 2025 polls from version 3.4.0 to version 3.5.0. The respondents also allegedly allowed the election results to pass through Data Center 3, which the complainants noted as an 'illegal, unauthorized server.' The complaint also flagged Comelec's move to delete around 5 million votes of vote discrepancy without the participation of the five transparency groups, namely: Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections, the media, the dominant majority political party, and the dominant minority political party. In a statement, Garcia said Comelec is open to any investigation surrounding the 2025 polls, noting that the agency observed an orderly, honest, transparent, peaceful, and credible election. 'Pinagkakatiwalaan po ng sambayanan ang NBI at ganun din po kami sa Komisyon. Lahat po ng mga binabanggit nila ay matagal at paulit-ulit na po naming nasagot at pinabulaanan,' Garcia said. 'Ang mga ganitong hindi pagsang-ayon o salungat ng paninindigan ay atin pong inaasahan bilang isang larawan ng malusog na demokrasya,' he added. (The public trusts the NBI, and we at the Commission do as well. All the issues they've raised have long been addressed and repeatedly denied. We expect these kinds of disagreements or opposing views as a reflection of a healthy democracy.) The national and local elections were held on May 12, 2025.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
