Berjaya Land to start planting durian in Perlis
The selected durian variety is Blackthorn, renowned for its rich flavour and strong market demand, with plans to cater to both local and international markets.
Meanwhile, the fast-growing, high-yield Napier grass will be cultivated to support livestock farming and contribute to Malaysia's wider food security efforts.
In a statement, Berjaya Land said the project forms part of its commitment to sustainable agriculture, supporting the cattle and dairy industries and promoting agro-based economic growth.
To advance the effort, the company signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Impianan Utara Sdn Bhd to jointly develop the plantation and explore mining opportunities for rare earth elements and other minerals in Perlis. Both initiatives will be carried out in partnership with Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) Perlis, the state's investment arm.
Impianan Utara, through its collaboration with MBI, has already secured the necessary state-level approvals. The mining component aligns with Malaysia's ambition to become a leading, environmentally responsible player in the global rare earth industry.
Berjaya Land said the dual projects are expected to deliver wide-ranging benefits for Perlis, including new revenue streams, job creation, and increased economic activity. Revenue from the plantation will be shared with the state through MBI's arrangement with Impianan Utara, with additional contributions through annual lease payments.
Beyond income generation, the plantation is also poised to stimulate downstream agro-processing industries and enhance Perlis' export potential.
Berjaya Land group chief executive officer Syed Ali Shahul Hameed said the initiative is about more than just new revenue streams.
"We see value not just in the projects themselves, but in the positive ripple effects they can bring from creating jobs and attracting investments, to uplifting surrounding communities and promoting knowledge exchange."
The partners also plan to explore future collaborations in areas such as border city development and tourism, leveraging Perlis' strategic location to further elevate the state's economic profile.

RM4.3mil in Mayu Global's frozen bank accounts released, RM6.4mil still held
KUALA LUMPUR: Mayu Global Group Bhd has disclosed that RM4.3 million previously frozen in the bank accounts of its 80 per cent-owned subsidiary, Sunrise Manner Sdn Bhd, has been released by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). This follows letters received from Bukit Aman notifying the cancellation of the freeze order, issued under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Mayu Global said the affected accounts were held at RHB Bank Bhd, Hong Leong Bank Bhd, Malayan Banking Bhd, Maybank Islamic Bhd and CIMB Bank Bhd. "Following the release of RM4.3 million from the above-mentioned bank accounts, the remaining amount still frozen by PDRM in the group's bank accounts stands at RM6.4 million," it said. This marks a partial easing of restrictions first disclosed in April, when the company revealed that bank accounts linked to Mayu Global and its subsidiaries had been frozen as part of an ongoing investigation involving one of its directors. The investigation also led to the seizure of company vehicles and changes in boardroom composition. The company said it would continue to monitor the matter closely. "The board of directors will continue to monitor the situation closely and will make further announcements as and when there are material developments," it said. In April, PDRM froze RM10.67 million across the bank accounts of Mayu Global and several subsidiaries under anti-money laundering laws. Mayu Global's executive director Tan Kim Hee was detained on April 2 to assist with the investigation and released on April 7 without any charges filed. The probe was reportedly linked to the long-running MBI pyramid scheme, with Tan identified as the brother-in-law of MBI founder Tedy Teow and a substantial shareholder of Mayu Global. The affected accounts included Sunrise Manner, Sungguh Gemilang Development Sdn Bhd, Progerex Sdn Bhd, SMPC Industries Sdn Bhd and others.

MBPJ delays Aug 1 private parking rollout
THE ROLLOUT of the Selangor Intelligent Parking System (SIPS) in Petaling Jaya has been postponed, says Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. 'For now, three local councils have agreed and will go ahead first. 'However, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has postponed implementation in its area,' he said after launching the Interim Report of the 2024 Agriculture Census for Selangor in Klang. The councils that will proceed with the implementation on Aug 1 are Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS). Amirudin had previously said the state government continued to engage with local councils to standardise digital parking collection, adding that only MBPJ had raised objections to the initiative. It was also reported that MBPJ had not given their consent for the implementation yet as there were still a few terms that needed to be ironed out. The privatisation comes under SIPS, a state-led initiative to digitalise and centralise public parking. The initiative is spearheaded by Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) and implemented through a private concessionaire in collaboration with local councils. Under the SIPS model, parking revenue is split 50% to the concessionaire, 40% to the local council and 10% to MBI to support state initiatives. The system, to be operated by Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, is aimed at improving efficiency and boosting state revenue.

Johor allocates RM2 million to boost durian industry
JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has allocated RM2 million this year to strengthen the state's durian industry, aiming to support small- and medium-scale growers and boost fruit production for both local and export markets. The allocation, jointly provided with the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, is expected to benefit 341 durian farmers and cover approximately 650 hectares of cultivated land. The initiative is part of Johor's broader plan to upscale tropical fruit farming, with a target of producing more than 900,000 metric tonnes annually by 2027, including major crops such as coconut, pineapple, jackfruit, guava, watermelon, papaya, and banana. State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said the durian sector continues to show strong potential, especially with growing global demand for Malaysian varieties. "The durian season may be ending, but our commitment to the industry is only beginning. This RM2 million investment reflects our focus on empowering local farmers and scaling Johor's tropical fruit industry sustainably," he said in a statement today. Zahari added that while premium varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn draw international attention, kampung durians still command a loyal following and steady demand. Kampung durian refers to non-clonal, seed-grown durian trees typically found in rural orchards, smallholdings, or naturally propagated farms across the country. "The fruit industry remains a key contributor to Johor's agro-economy, and the state plans to continue leveraging its fertile land and established farming networks to elevate export value. "More funding and technical support are expected to be channelled to fruit cooperatives, research, and infrastructure development over the next two years," he said.
