DHAKA: At least 19 people were killed when a Bangladesh Air Force training plane crashed into a school and college campus in Dhaka on Monday, officials confirmed. More than 50 others, including children, suffered burns and were rushed to hospitals.
The incident took place at Milestone School and College in Uttara, a northern district of Dhaka. The military confirmed the aircraft involved was an F-7 BGI training jet that had taken off at 1:06 PM local time.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the plane crashed into the building, causing a massive fire and thick smoke. 'I heard an explosion and turned to see only fire and smoke,' said Masud Tarik, a teacher at the school.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze as emergency teams pulled victims from the wreckage. Hospital officials confirmed a third-grade student was among the dead, with others suffering severe burns.
Bangladesh's interim government leader Muhammad Yunus pledged a full investigation and support for victims. 'The loss is irreparable,' he said.
The crash follows another aviation tragedy last month in India, where an Air India flight crashed into a medical college, killing 260 people. - Reuters

Air India jet grounded after power generator catches fire in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Air India said on Tuesday it has grounded a passenger jet for checks after a power generator caught fire shortly after landing at India's capital city, New Delhi. The aircraft's auxillary power unit (APU) caught fire when its passengers were getting off the aircraft, and was automatically shut down, a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement. APU is an electrical power generator typically located at the rear of an aircraft. Its primary function is to start the main engines and power essential onboard systems while the airplane is parked at the airport. Passengers "disembarked normally" and are safe but the aircraft, which was flying from Hong Kong, suffered some damage, the airline said. It did not elaborate on the damages caused to the plane. The impacted flight is an Airbus A321, data from flightradar24 showed. Air India said it has notified the regulator of the incident. India's aviation regulator was not immediately available for comment. Air India has come under heightened scrutiny in the aftermath of one of its planes crashing fatally in the western Ahmedabad city in June, which killed 260 people.

Bangladesh mourns 27 dead in school jet crash tragedy

DHAKA: Families and teachers gathered in grief at a Bangladeshi school where a fighter jet crashed, killing 25 children and two others in the country's deadliest aviation disaster in years. The Chinese-made F-7 BJI aircraft struck Milestone School and College on Monday, just as pupils were leaving class. 'So far, 27 people have died. Among them, 25 are children and one is a pilot,' said Sayedur Rahman from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The earlier toll of 20 was revised as more victims were identified. 'Seventy-eight people are being treated in different hospitals,' Rahman added. The military confirmed over 170 injuries and is investigating the cause. The school, usually filled with noise, stood silent on Tuesday with classes suspended. 'Along with the children, the school has lost its life,' said teacher Shahadat Hossain, whose son narrowly escaped. 'There are two swings in front of the affected building. During lunch breaks and after school, children play there. Even yesterday, around the time the plane crashed, students were on those swings,' Hossain told AFP. Among the 7,000 enrolled students was Abul Bashar's sixth-grade son, who lost his best friend. 'He came out just two or three minutes before the accident occurred,' Bashar said. 'He couldn't sleep through the night and forced me to bring him to school this morning.' Authorities collected scattered belongings—bags, shoes, and ID cards—from the site. Senior police officer Pahn Chakma said armed forces were still securing the area before evidence collection begins. Air Force personnel removed jet wreckage overnight but continue searching for clues. School staff held prayers on campus Monday night as the nation reeled. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus declared a day of mourning, calling the loss 'irreparable.' The military stated the pilot, flight lieutenant Towkir Islam, faced mechanical failure during training and attempted to steer clear of populated areas before crashing. - AFP

Most of the victims were schoolchildren who had just been let out of class when the Chinese-made F-7 BJI aircraft slammed into the Milestone School and College on Monday. The crash, which is the country's deadliest aviation accident in decades, also left more than 170 people injured. "So far, 27 people have died. Among them, 25 are children and one is a pilot," Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the chief adviser for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said. "Seventy-eight people are being treated in different hospitals," Rahman added. The Bangladesh military on Monday had said the pilot, flight lieutenant Towkir Islam, was on a routine training mission when the jet "reportedly encountered a mechanical failure". "The exact cause remains under investigation," it said in a statement. The pilot tried to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas but, "despite his best efforts", crashed into the two-storey school building, the military added. The interim government of Muhammad Yunus declared that Tuesday would be a day of national mourning. Yunus expressed "deep grief and sorrow" over the incident in a post on X. "The loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others affected by this accident, is irreparable," he said.
