The best wellness retreat in the U.S. is located in the Catskills, says new ranking

Between the rapidly increasing rent prices, the city's relentless pace and the general, you know, garbage-fire state of the world, many New Yorkers can feel stuck in a perpetual state of anxiety. (Guilty!) That's where wellness retreats are a godsend, offering some much-welcome rest, relaxation and recentering in our never-endingly busy schedules. And according to a new ranking, New York State is, graciously, home to the best wellness retreat in the entire country.
Yes, USA Today has recently come out with its Readers' Choice Awards 2025 ranking of the 10 best wellness retreat centers in the United States, places "where tranquility meets transformation, where the serene beauty of nature blends with the nurturing care of wellness experts." And topping the peaceful list this year is New York's own Dharmakaya Center for Wellbeing at number one.
Located up in Cragsmoor, NY, Dharmakaya Center was praised by the outlet (each venue was nominated by an expert panel and voted on by readers) for its "range of Buddhish programs," its "residence halls surrounded by 90 acres of forest" and rates that include "three organic vegetarian meals daily." Wellness programming ranges from artistic activities (painting, dancing) to physical pursuits (wood walks, gentle yoga), all set against the stunning and serene surroundings of upstate New York.
And Dharmakaya Center isn't the only Empire State-based retreat highlighted by the ranking— Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, "a community-minded wellness retreat center in New York's Hudson Valley" (Rhinebeck, to be exact), came in at No. 7 on USA Today's list. "Simple accommodations have no phones or TV; you'll spend your days eating whole-food meals, hiking forest trails, kayaking, playing lawn games, enjoying the sports court, or attending yoga, tai chi, or meditation classes," per the ranking.

'You've worn your molars right down,' said my dentist, matter-of-factly, as she snapped the latex gloves from her hands. 'I can practically hear your jaw clicking.' I did my best not to feel offended. 'Sorry,' I mumbled, rubbing my aching massester muscles. I'm one of the 8 to 10% of the UK population that grinds their teeth in some way — and I'm betting, you are too. I'm not entirely sure when it started, but these days, I'm all-too-aware that I do it pretty much every night. I've woken myself up one-too-many times by accidentally biting down on my tongue (yes, it really hurts) and when my alarm goes off, I open my eyes with an aching jaw. The habit seeps into my waking hours too. I'll suddenly become aware that my jaw is clenched, as though that's its default position. I once heard (e.g. watched a TikTok video) that the three-finger test is a quick way to asses your jaw mobility. If you can fit three stacked fingers between your upper and lower reeth, you're in the normal range. I can only just about do it. But bruxism, the umbrella term for teeth-grinding or jaw clenching, does more than just make your jaw ache. In fact, it can cause a whole host of issues, from dental problems and headaches, to pain in the face, neck or shoulders, and TMJ disorders. To put it mildly, teeth grinding is no picnic — and it's even more annoying when you consider that you're most likely doing it subconciously. And while the current estimates would suggest that around 6.7 million Brits deal with condition, it seems to be on the rise. Post-pandemic, a USA-based 2021 survey among dentists found that 70% reported an increase in patients grinding and clenching their teeth. More recently, the hashtag #teethgrinding on TikTok has a staggering 262.9 million views, while #unclencyourjaw has 37.7 million. You can even buy tshirts and artwork on Etsy emblazoned with the phrase 'unclench your jaw'. And dentist Dr Sahil Patel, of London's Marylebone Smile Clinic, tells Metro that he's seeing an increasing number of patients displaying signs of bruxism. 'Well developed jaw muscles show as a squarer facial appearance or stronger jawline,' he explains. 'And, on the teeth themselves, bruxism causes accelerated tooth wear and breakage, making teeth look shorter, squarer and yellower. Tooth sensitivity and gum recession can also be a sign.' Why have we become a nation unable to relax our faces? While it's not always clear why people do it, stress and anxiety is a well-observed cause. 'Our patients are absoloutely more stressed than ever,' Dr Sahil says. 'They may not always disclose it to us, but we can sense when someone is stressed. We're seeing it more with younger people.' Mental Health UK's annual Burnout Report, released in January 2025, found that one in three adults either 'always or often' experience high or extreme levels of pressure or stress, while nine in 10 say they've experienced it at some point over the last year. Mind also found that women are more likely than men to experience common mental health problems (20.7% of women compared to 13.2% of men affected), with young women aged 16 to 24 at the highest risk. It's worth nothing that women are also more likely to experience bruxism, particularly when they're awake. Experts are pretty much in agreement that society is increasinly stressful. Chartered psychologist, Dr Manpreet Dhuffar-Pottiwal says we live an era of 'uncertainty and instability'. She tells Metro: 'Political unrest, economic fluctuations, and environmental crises result in an unpredictability which leaves people feeling out of control regarding their futures.' Our 'always-online' culture, particularly experienced by younger generations also doesn't help, as Dr Manpreet says we face 'technological overload.' 'Social media platforms promote curated representations of life, leading us to measure their worth against others. Additionally, urbanisation has contributed to a disconnection from nature. People confined to busy city lives miss out on the calming effects of the natural world.' Workplace pressures have changed too. 'The rise of remote work and gig economies has introduced ambiguity about job security and increased workloads,' says Dr Manpreet. 'Many young employees, striving for stability in uncertain times, experience burnout and chronic stress as they juggle multiple responsibilities. 'Rigid schedules and the lack of work-life balance lead many to neglect self-care practices.' And finally, as ever, the global pandemic plays a part. Dr Manpreet says: 'It heightened health-related anxieties, with individuals increasingly focused on personal safety. 'This ongoing concern can create a cycle of stress that affects various facets of life. 'It's no surprise that there's a growing prevalence of conditions like bruxism.' What are the options for treating jaw clenching? So, aside from taking an indefinite holiday to escape the stressors of daily life, what can we do to relieve all this tension? According to Dr Sahil, your dentist can help. 'We can't manage your stress, but we can do a few things to manage the symptoms,' he says. 'Night guards can cushion the contact between the teeth during the night, or reainers, which are thinner, are designed to keep the teeth in their position and protect from night grinding. 'They come in many different forms and materials, but the ballpark cost for these is between £250 and £500.' Alternatively, nurse prescriber and aesthetic trainer, Natalja Andrejeva, says that Botox is an 'emerging go-to solution' for teeth-grinding. 'Over the past few years, I've seen a noticeable rise in clicents seeking relief from bruxism using Botox, especially post-pandemic,' she tells Metro. 'Botox is injected into the masseter muscles to relax them. This reduces the intensity of clenching and grinding without affecting your ability to chew or speak.' The result? 'Less jaw tension, fewer headaches, and better sleep and quality of life. You'll also get a slightly slimmer jawline,' adds Natalja, founder of Face Code Aesthetic, where she offers the treatment, starting at £290. 'Typically, treatment would be required every three to six months, depending on muscle strength and individual response. 'But over time, some clients find they can space out treatments more as the habit and symptoms lessen.' Of course, the ultimate — and almost impossible solution — is to live a stress-free life. UN chief Antonio Guterres blasted the 'indifference and inaction' of global leaders over the Gaza slaughter, as children dying from hunger hit 122 since the war began. Keir Starmer vowed the UK will 'pull every lever' to get vital aid into the Strip and added: 'This humanitarian catastrophe must end.' ‌ Pitiful cries for help ring out from the depths of despair in Gaza, calling to a world that appears to have stood by and watched the hell of ­slaughter and starvation unfold. And as yet more horrific images of ­emaciated children on the brink of death emerge, the call for action to end the suffering of Palestinians in the face of relentless Israeli attacks and blockades grows. ‌ In one haunting image, Muhammed Zakariya Ayyub al-Matouk – a tragic sight of skin and bones – clings to his desperate mum in a tent in Gaza City where there is no access to milk, food, or basic necessities. The one-and-a-half-year-old is just one of an estimated 70,000 ­children said by medics to be in a state of starvation – and up to 28 are believed to be dying every day. Gaza's hospitals yesterday reported nine more deaths from hunger in 24 hours, bringing the total to 122 since the war started. In another harrowing picture, Yezen Abu Ful, two, lies helpless at the Al-Shati Refugee Camp, waiting for food many know may never come until it is too late. ‌ UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the world not to ignore the crisis. He said: 'I cannot explain the level of indifference and inaction we see by too many in the ­international community. The lack of compassion, the lack of truth, the lack of humanity.' Gaza-based journalist Noor al-Shana told how desperate Palestinians are 'tired of empty expressions of solidarity' – as the death toll in the strip hit 59,587. She said: 'We don't want just words, we want actions. There are thousands of ­children dying now and no one is doing anything. The world is saying 'Free Palestine'. We don't want words, we want solutions.' ‌ World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Israel 's actions in Gaza were causing 'man-made mass starvation'. Parents are going without food themselves for days in a bid to save their stricken children. Unicef and other agencies warned Gaza will run out of the therapeutic food needed to save the lives of severely malnourished children by mid-August unless aid is restored. ‌ The disturbing scenes came as 221 cross-party MPs demanded Keir Starmer ­recognise Palestine as a state. But the PM resisted and, writing in the Mirror today, insisted such a move must be part of a wider 'pathway to peace'. But amid the misery, there was a tiny glimmer of hope, as triplets born in April continue to grow. Mum Alaa, 31, and 36-year-old husband Louay feared she would miscarry the tots due to the stress of Israeli airstrikes. The couple, who also have ­children Alma, seven, and ­two-year-old Ahmed, had to move three times due to the attacks or military orders – once while she was heavily ­pregnant. Alaa said: 'We ran in silence. I prayed my babies wouldn't slip away while I escaped death.' With help from an Islamic Relief project, their little girls Israa, Ayla and Aylol were born underweight but alive. Alaa added: 'They are my miracle. My proof that even in war, life insists on being born.' But the babies and their mother could still face problems if they need any more medical care, ­equipment and drugs fast running out due to the Israeli blockade. ‌ Pregnant women are now too malnourished to stand, and even doctors are facing starvation. The women are having ­operations without anaesthetics. Nurses have to squeeze three or four babies into a single incubator. Doctors have reported a huge increase in miscarriages. Medics at hospitals such as Al Awda in northern Gaza are risking their lives to keep services going. More than 1,500 health workers have been killed while half of all hospitals have had to shut down. Aid workers, too, are suffering from a lack of food. The UN claims at least 100,000 Palestinians are starving. President Emmanuel Macron said France will recognise Palestine as a state immediately, piling pressure on Mr Starmer. A third of MPs in the Commons signed the letter to the PM demanding he follow suit. Charities have demanded Israel allow the UN to distribute aid, which they said is sitting outside Gaza. They called for the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which is responsible for what little aid is getting through, to be shut down amid deaths at food queues. GHF insists those tragedies never happened at its site and the Israeli military said troops have not fired on civilians. Ceasefire talks appear to have stalled amid differing demands from Israel and Hamas, which sparked the war with its October 7 attack that killed 1, 200 people. The group also kidnapped 251, some of whom are still in captivity.
