Malaysia's Startup Asean platform aims to connect 10,000 firms regionwide by year-end, says Chang

Malay Mail25-06-2025
PUTRAJAYA, June 25 — Malaysia is targeting to onboard at least 10,000 startups by the end of this year under the newly launched Startup Asean platform.
The platform serves as a regional digital gateway to connect and empower startups, investors and talents across Southeast Asia.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Chang Lih Kang, said the platform currently hosts about 5,000 startups and is showing encouraging progress since becoming fully operational.
'We are targeting at least 10,000 startups by year-end, and we have already reached around half of that.
'This shows promising development, and we hope the platform will help the entire region to grow together. The benefits are not limited to a single country but extend to all Asean member states,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the platform here today.
Malaysia, as the Asean chair in 2025, is spearheading the initiative through MOSTI, with implementation by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd. The platform was developed in collaboration with all 10 Asean member states.
In his speech at the launch, Chang said the Startup Asean platform reflects Malaysia's commitment to lead with purpose, adding that it represents the first major deliverable under the Asean Startup Initiative.
'As chair of Asean in 2025, Malaysia has taken on a bold responsibility to shape a future-oriented startup ecosystem. Through this initiative, we are proud to introduce the Asean Technology Startup Ignite 2025,' he said.
Chang noted that Southeast Asia is home to more than 680 million people, with over half of the population aged below 35. The region has a combined gross domestic product of more than US$3.9 trillion, while its digital economy is projected to exceed US$1 trillion by 2030 (US$1=RM4.233).
The platform's launch today marks the second phase of a longer regional roadmap. The first phase, completed in 2024, focused on developing the platform and engaging stakeholders.
The third phase, expected in 2026, will see the establishment of the Asean Centre of Excellence for early-stage startups to further elevate the region's innovation ecosystem.
Asked how MOSTI will ensure inclusivity for startups in less developed Asean member states, Chang said the platform was designed to be borderless and accessible to all.
'This regional platform is one of the ways we can assist startups from less developed countries. As long as you have internet access, you can come on board. Your company can be seen by investors and talent from anywhere in the region. This is how we help increase their visibility and chances of success,' he said.
Tracking Impact and Regional Collaboration
Cradle group chief executive officer Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke said the platform comes with clear performance indicators, including startup participation, investment outcomes, and regional collaboration.
'In 2025, we aim to onboard 10,000 startups, 2,000 investors and 500 strategic partners. We are also planning to run five regional programmes through the platform. These efforts will support an ecosystem valued at around US$131.2 billion,' he said.
Vanhaecke said the platform is not just a database but a regional tool for inclusive impact.
'We will track the number of investments, the emergence of new startups, and collaborations between founders from different countries. Two regional programmes are already in place through our dialogue partners from Korea and China. These are open to all startups across Asean,' he said.
Vanhaecke said three more regional programmes will be introduced this year, with more to follow in the future.
'This is just the beginning. With strong participation from Asean countries, the platform has the potential to become a key enabler for innovation, growth and cross-border cooperation,' he said. — Bernama

Visits to Italy, France and Brazil achieved key objectives, says PM Anwar

RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Monday (July 7) that his official visits to Italy, France and Brazil have successfully met their intended objectives. Besides reinforcing bilateral ties, he said the visits also contributed to efforts to attract investments and boost Malaysia's trade relations. Speaking at a press conference at the conclusion of the three-nation visit which began in Italy on July 1, he said it also raised Malaysia's visibility in its capacity as Asean Chair for 2025. He underscored that the mission opened up wider networks for Malaysian companies to expand internationally. The visit to Italy alone generated over RM8bil in potential investments, while the engagements in France brought in RM4bil. Anwar was accompanied by five Cabinet ministers - Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir was also part of the delegation. The Prime Minister was also joined by a business delegation comprising representatives from leading Malaysian corporates and innovative enterprises, including Petronas, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Maybank, FGV, YTL Power and Sunway. Anwar's inaugural official visit to Italy came at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, aimed at deepening bilateral relations across a broad range of sectors. While investment and trade were key priorities, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the trip also provided an opportunity to address geopolitical issues. Anwar stressed that Malaysia's firm stance on humanitarian issues in the Middle East was conveyed clearly, especially on the situation in Gaza and attacks on Iran. He noted that Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva were aligned in their calls to end the violence in Gaza, which has reportedly claimed some 56,000 lives. "Macron has already issued his statement. As for Meloni, she agreed on the need to stop the attacks. She specifically mentioned Israeli aggression and supports peace efforts and the two-state solution, meaning she recognises Palestine as a state," said Anwar. Responding to claims that the visits benefited European nations more - particularly in relation to aircraft purchases - Anwar said the deals would yield long-term benefits for Malaysia. "These aircraft orders were made by airlines, including AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines, but the government also wants the country to benefit," he explained. Malaysia, he said, is seeking to position itself as a hub for aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus and Embraer, particularly in areas like maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), training, and supply chain activities. In Brazil, during the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, Malaysia drew attention when Anwar was invited to speak at the BRICS Business Forum attended by the Brazilian President. "The forum was opened with a keynote session by the President. Malaysia was given priority even though we are not a full member (of BRICS)," Anwar said. He said that he used the opportunity to stress the need for justice between developed and developing nations, and to raise concerns over the governance of artificial intelligence technologies. The visit to Brazil also allowed Anwar to meet with several world leaders and heads of international organisations. In Rio de Janeiro, the second biggest city in Brazil, the Prime Minister held discussions with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and three counterparts namely Narendra Modi (India), Pham Minh Chinh (Vietnam), and Mostafa Madbouly (Egypt). Following a meeting with New Development Bank President Dilma Rousseff, Anwar said Malaysia's potential membership in the bank would be considered after a detailed assessment by Bank Negara Malaysia. He added that several Malaysian companies, including Petronas and Yinson Production, have already made inroads into the Brazilian market. - Bernama

US hikes tariffs on Malaysian goods to 25% from August 1

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States has increased tariffs on all Malaysian products entering the country to 25%, up from the previously announced 24%. The new rate will take effect on August 1 this year. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and posted on his Truth Social account, US President Donald Trump stated, 'the 25 per cent number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity we have with your country.' However, the letter also mentioned an exemption for Malaysian companies that choose to manufacture within the US. Trump assured that Washington would expedite approvals for such investments, stating, 'we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely - in other words, in a matter of weeks.' The letter further warned that if Malaysia retaliates with its own tariff hikes, the US would add those rates to the existing 25%. Malaysia has been in negotiations with the US since April to lower the initial 24% tariff, with the latest talks held on June 18. The announcement precedes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN-US post-ministerial conference and related meetings under the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting.

After Trump warning, Tengku Zafrul reaffirms Malaysia's commitment to Brics cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Malaysia is committed to strengthening co-operation in economics, trade and investment with Brics countries, especially with the great potential of artificial intelligence (AI) which needs to be harnessed for inclusive development. 'With Asean's digital economy expected to reach US$2 trillion (US$1=RM4.231) by 2030, this is a golden opportunity that we cannot afford to waste,' said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz in a post on X today. Tengku Zafrul said the side meetings with Brics partner countries and business leaders opened up space for Malaysian companies to explore markets and investment opportunities in future-oriented sectors. He said Miti would continue to facilitate and support local companies to continue to boldly explore new markets. 'Malaysia's commitment is to strengthen a rules-based and inclusive trading system. 'Together, we build a more just and progressive global economic future,' he said. Tengku Zafrul was among the members of the delegation led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit hosted by Brazil. — Bernama
