The dangerous consequences of taking a cold shower on a hot day
Our body's optimal temperature is around 37°C. This temperatures ensures our body systems can function properly. But when the core gets too hot the temperature regulating centre of the brain starts sending nervous signals out to the blood vessels and muscles in or near the skin – telling them to start activating their cooling mechanisms.
If our core stays at high temperature for too long (around 39-40°C), this can lead to organ damage. So to ensure our temperature stays optimal, the body uses multiple techniques to cool itself down.
For instance, the body radiates heat into the surrounding environment by electromagnetic (thermal) radiation. Approximately 60% of our body heat is lost this way.
Sweating is another mechanism the body uses. Around 22% of our body heat is lost this way. But when the air temperature around us exceeds our body temperature, sweating becomes the dominant mechanism for reducing core temperature. Any remaining body heat is then lost through a mixture of convection into the air or liquid the body may be in contact with and conduction into solid objects that the body may be in contact with.
To support these mechanisms, our blood vessels change diameter. The ones closest to the skin dilate (widen) to allow more blood into them so they can get close to the relatively cooler surface of the skin.
The body then works to circulate the blood so that heat from inside the body can be moved to the periphery to cool off. Similarly on our skin, the hairs remain flat to allow air next to the body to cool and be replaced, helping to dissipate heat.
Of course, when the weather gets really hot outside, these mechanisms just don't feel like they cut it.
Although diving into a cold bath or shower straight after being out in the heat might feel nice on your skin, it isn't doing what is needed to reduce the core temperature of the body. It might also be risky for some people.
When exposed to cold, the blood vessels near to the skin constrict – reducing the blood flow into these areas.
So in the context of cooling the body down, jumping into a cold shower does the opposite of what needs to happen, as less blood is now flowing to the surface of the skin. This will hold the heat in and around your organs instead of getting rid of it. Basically, you're tricking your body that it doesn't need to cool down, but actually needs to conserve heat.
And, depending on how cold your water is, sudden exposure could even trigger dangerous consequences for some people.
Exposure to water that is 15°C can trigger the cold shock response. This causes the blood vessels in the skin (those in contact with the cold water) to constrict rapidly. This increases blood pressure as the heart is now pumping against increased resistance.
This response can be particularly dangerous in people with underlying heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease. The cold shock response can also lead to an irregular heartbeat and even death when going from very hot to cold.
Thankfully, these events are rare – and probably won't happen if you're just taking a cold shower or bath in your home. But you might want to skip the cold plunge or avoid taking an ice bath on a hot day for this reason.
Hot showers are also a bad idea on a warm day. Although it's sometimes said that a hot shower helps the body cool down faster, this unfortunately isn't true. Water that is warmer than the body is going to transfer energy in the form of heat into the body. This again prevents the body getting rid of heat – potentially increasing its core temperature.
On a hot day, a tepid or lukewarm bath or shower is the way to go, evidence suggests 26-27°C is most effective. This helps bring blood to the surface to cool, without being cold enough to cause the body to think it needs to conserve its heat.
Another reason to skip a cold shower on a hot day is that it might not help you get clean.
When we get hot, we sweat – and this sweat mixes with sebum, another skin product and the bacteria on our skin, which produces body odour. Cold water has been shown to be less effective at removing and breaking down sebum and other detritus on the skin, compared to warmer water, which means body odour will persist.
Cold water also causes the skin to tighten. This might potentially trap sebum and dirt within the pores. This can lead to blackheads, whiteheads and acne. But warm or lukewarm water can help dissolve and loosen material in the pores.
As you plan your escape and recovery from the heat this week, a lukewarm or cool shower or bath, rather than a cold shower, is a safer and more effective choice. This will allow your body to dissipate heat away from your core without harm.
Equally, if you do feel the need to go cooler, do it gradually so you aren't shocking the body's automatic temperature regulation system into action. Turning the temperature down gradually if you want to go cold, or slowly placing a limb in at a time can help with this process.

As a dietitian, I'm not one to overhype any particular food for its nutritional benefits, but there is one humble pantry staple I'm personally trying to eat more often: beans. Let's discuss the science behind why I'm working to include them more often, and why you should Dietary Guidelines recommend that adults consume about 1.5 cups of legumes per week, which can be divided into a half-cup serving three times a week. That's not much, but most of us still fall short. Eating beans also helps increase fiber, plant-based protein, and nutrients like potassium and B vitamins. Additionally, nearly 9 out of 10 Americans fail to meet the recommended fiber intake, which is 25 grams per day for women and 38 grams for men. Beans happen to be one of the richest sources of both soluble and insoluble fiber. And eating enough fiber supports better digestive health, regulates your blood sugar, and keeps you feeling full. You can think of fiber like the 'broom' that comes in to sweep out your gut, clearing out toxins, binding waste, and helping excrete excess hormones and cholesterol. Plus, eating enough fiber helps digestion run smoothly and keeps you a dietitian, I already knew beans were good for you. But lately, I've been more intentional about eating them regularly, and here's why: One of the biggest reasons I've been reaching for more beans is their impressive fiber content in a serving, especially soluble fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract, which helps lower LDL ('bad') cholesterol, slows the absorption of sugar, and feeds beneficial gut bacteria. This can have a powerful impact on heart health, blood sugar control, and digestive regularity. A half-cup of black beans delivers around 7 to 8 grams of fiber, putting a major dent in the recommended 25 to 38 grams per day. Research shows that diets high in fiber are linked to lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer, yet most of us are still falling far short. Eating beans regularly is a simple and effective way to close that gap. Beans are also a fantastic source of plant-based protein, with 7 to 9 grams per half-cup cooked serving, depending on the variety. This makes them especially valuable for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone looking to reduce their intake of animal protein. But it's not just about protein quantity, it's also about the total impact on health. Studies have shown that replacing animal proteins with plant proteins like those found in legumes is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers. Plus, plant-based proteins tend to come bundled with beneficial nutrients like fiber and antioxidants, rather than the saturated fat or cholesterol found in some animal products. Beans can help you boost your protein intake while supporting your long-term health goals. Beans may not get the same spotlight as trendy superfoods, but they're nutrient-dense powerhouses. In addition to fiber and protein, they contain a wide range of essential nutrients many Americans don't get enough of—including folate, magnesium, potassium, iron, and B vitamins. They're also rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation. These nutrients play a key role in everything from energy metabolism and red blood cell formation to nerve function and muscle health. Potassium, for example, helps balance sodium and support healthy blood pressure. Yet it's one of the most commonly under-consumed nutrients in the U.S. In fact, it's been labeled a 'nutrient of concern' for Americans. Beans offer a budget-friendly, accessible way to fill those nutrient gaps and support whole-body you're not used to eating beans, start small. And if you're new to beans and concerned about bloating, try lentils or split peas first, and gradually increase your intake while drinking plenty of water. All legumes count here — some of the most common legumes you'll find at the store include black beans, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, pinto beans, and edamame. Here are a few easy, non-intimidating ways to get more into your meals: Toss them into salads or grain bowls for a satisfying boost. Blend into dips like hummus or white bean spread. Scientists transform pee into material fit for medical implants

Scientists have developed a method that can transform human urine into the hard mineral in bones and tooth enamel. The research, funded by the U.S. military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), uses yeast to break urine down into hydroxyapatite, a form of calcium used in bone and dental implants. And hydroxyapatite isn't useful only for implants — the researchers behind the study said the material could be used in archaeological restoration, as biodegradable alternatives to plastic, and as building materials for construction projects. They published their findings May 6 in the journal Nature Communications. "This process achieves two goals at the same time," study co-author David Kisailus, a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of California, Irvine, said in a statement. "On the one hand, it helps remove human urine from wastewater streams, mitigating environmental pollution and the buildup of unwanted nutrients; and on the other hand, it produces a material that can be commercially marketed for use in a variety of settings." Hydroxyapatite is a tough solid containing charged molecules of calcium, phosphate and hydroxide. It's naturally occurring, as it is the primary component in both bones and teeth. This makes it useful in medical implants because it's not likely to be rejected by the body and can stimulate further growth. However, synthesizing the mineral is expensive, and some methods of doing so produce toxic intermediate chemicals. In mammals such as humans, hydroxyapatite is secreted by specialized cells called osteoblasts that draw in calcium phosphate from body fluids. But these cells don't live very long or divide frequently, which makes harnessing them at industrial scales challenging. Related: Are cavities 'contagious'? Tooth-decay yeast can pass from moms to babies To find another way of producing hydroxyapatite, the researchers turned to Saccharomyces boulardii, a type of yeast. Found on the skins of tropical fruits like lychee, the yeast species is commonly used as a probiotic. Urea is a waste product formed when the body breaks down proteins, and it's then filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine. The process of transforming the urea produces a gram of hydroxyapatite for every liter of urine, the scientists reported. "This process to yield hydroxyapatite, or bone mineral, takes less than one day," Kisailus said. "The fact that it uses yeast as a chassis, which is inexpensive and can be placed in large vats at relatively low temperatures — think about beer that's made via fermentation processes and is well scaled — shows that this can be done easily without major infrastructural needs, and that has the added benefit of making it accessible to developing economies." With their method demonstrated, the scientists are now investigating ways to make it work at scale. They say that they hope to apply the process in order to 3D print hydroxyapatite-based materials for implants, plastics, construction and energy applications.

The world is on fire, and this summer's record-high temperatures prove it. And some experts say that when the heat index is high, water alone isn't enough to hydrate the body. 'In high temperatures, you need both fluids and minerals to regulate body temperature and muscle function. Electrolytes like sodium and potassium help your cells hold onto water, reducing dehydration,' said Dr. Nicole Tsang, clinician at Circle Medical. Experts like Tsang recommend consuming 0.5 to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. However, when temperatures rise, proper hydration equals vigilance plus increased intake. 'Prevention is key during a heatwave. By combining smart hydration with electrolyte-rich foods, you can stay well and protect your body from heat stress.' Proper hydration plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature, preventing infections, eliminating waste and enhancing nutrient absorption. It's also involved in optimizing sleep, cognition and mood, with studies suggesting that adequate hydration makes you a better person. On the flip side, a recent study found that not consuming enough water increases the risk of death in middle-aged folks by 20%. Tsang notes that as temperatures increase, so too does our sweat response, leading to a loss of electrolytes. 'Sweat depletes essential minerals. Without replacing them, your body struggles to maintain fluid balance,' she said. Below, she shared five doctor-approved foods to help the body stay balanced. As the name implies, watermelon is water-rich, at 92% H2O. In addition to helping hydrate, watermelon is an excellent source of cell-boosting lycopene. 'It's also high in potassium, which helps regulate fluid balance and supports muscle function,' said Tsang. Eaten chilled or blended, it's a refreshing way to replenish your energy. At 96% water, cucumbers have the highest H2O content of any solid food and contain anti-inflammatory compounds that can help reduce internal heat and promote hydration. Tsang suggests adding cucumbers to salads and chilled soups, or infusing water with them 'for a cooling twist.' For those looking for more ways to curate the cuke, TikTokker Logan Moffitt, lovingly nicknamed 'the cucumber guy,' has risen to produce popularity with his viral cucumber salad recipes. Dark leafy greens are rich in magnesium, 'a key electrolyte involved in hydration, nerve signaling and temperature regulation,' said Tsang. Kale and spinach are also excellent sources of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium. To get your greens, Tsang recommends adding kale or spinach to your smoothie or pairing them with citrus-based dressings. Yogurt contains calcium and potassium. Tsang notes that the high protein content in yogurt helps maintain stable energy levels during heat spikes, while probiotics support digestive health. Coconut water contains electrolytes that help with hydration, along with antioxidants that support immune health and help the body fight oxidative stress. 'Often called 'nature's sports drink,' coconut water naturally contains potassium, sodium, and magnesium, making it ideal for post-sweat rehydration,' said Tsang. You can drink it on its own, use it as a base for a smoothie, or try it in the viral 'cloud coffee' trend. How do you know when it's time to reup on H2O and hydrating foods? Tsang says symptoms of dehydration include: Dry mouth Dizziness or light-headedness Fatigue or irritability Dark urine or infrequent urination These symptoms can quickly escalate in hot weather, leading to more severe signs, such as confusion, a rapid heart rate or fainting. If you experience these symptoms, seek immediate medical care. To prevent dehydration during the summer months, Tsang recommends sipping water throughout the day and pairing it with hydrating foods to improve retention. She also advises people to limit salty snacks and avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, as these can increase fluid loss. Finally, keep summer meals light and fresh with an emphasis on fruits and veggies.
