
Is the universe halfway to its end? New theory predicts a Big Crunch in 33 billion years
That might sound far off, but in cosmic terms, it's uncomfortably soon.
Over the past year, astronomers working with the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) have spotted something intriguing: dark energy, the mysterious force causing the universe to expand faster and faster – might not be a constant after all. Instead, it could be changing over time. And if that's true, it's a big deal. It would challenge one of the core assumptions of modern physics: that dark energy is a stable, unchanging force.
Right now, the leading model of dark energy is the cosmological constant, a number Einstein introduced in his equations over a century ago. But the new observations suggest that this constant might not be enough to explain what's really going on.
A fresh, not-yet-peer-reviewed paper (The Lifespan of our Universe) from June proposes a more complex idea- that dark energy is made up of two components. The first is an axion- a strange, hypothetical particle so light and elusive that it hardly ever interacts with anything. Imagine these axions as a gentle energy mist, quietly stretching across the universe, fueling its current accelerated expansion.
The second is the cosmological constant, but in this model, it's negative. Unlike a positive constant that pushes space outward, a negative one would pull it back. Right now, the axions are doing most of the expanding work. But as time passes, the axions are expected to fade. And when they do, the negative cosmological constant will start to dominate- slowing down the expansion, then reversing it.
This would kickstart a dramatic new phase- the Big Crunch. Galaxies would crash into each other. Space would shrink. The universe would heat up and grow denser, spiraling into a final singularity, the opposite of the Big Bang.
According to the theorists, the 'beginning of the end' will start in about 10 billion years, which is less than the current age of the universe. After that, it'll take another 10 billion years for everything to collapse. The universe, then, would have a total lifetime of around 33 billion years- meaning it's already past the halfway mark.
Of course, this theory is still highly speculative.The DES and DESI findings are early results. They'll need to be confirmed by future observations. And even if the cosmological constant turns out to be inaccurate, it doesn't automatically prove this two-part axion model is right. Still, it opens the door to new questions about the ultimate fate of everything we know.

August sky guide: Shooting stars, visible planets, and Moon events you shouldn't miss
This August, the sky has a few stories to tell. From streaking meteors to planets pairing up with the moon, the night sky over India is full of quiet and breathtaking moments this month. Whether you're a casual sky-gazer or someone who's never spotted a shooting star before, August 2025 offers the perfect chance to slow down and reconnect with the cosmos. August 12–13: The Perseids Meteor Shower (Shooting Stars Galore) The Perseids are one of the best meteor showers of the year and they're happening right now. They've been going since late July and will continue lighting up the sky until August 24. But their peak, the night they're supposed to be the most active lands on August 12–13. At its best, the Perseids can produce up to 150 meteors per hour. That's like two or three shooting stars every minute. But here's the twist. This year, the full moon (August 9) is just a few days before the peak, so its bright light might wash out the faint meteors. That doesn't mean you won't see any, just that the show won't be as dramatic unless you find a really dark spot. If you're in India, the best time to catch the shower is after midnight until before sunrise on August 13. Try heading away from the city, somewhere like Spiti, Ladakh, Rann of Kutch or even rural parts of Karnataka or Uttarakhand. The darker the sky, the better the show. And if you miss the peak? Don't worry. You can still catch a few meteors in the days after especially around August 16–20, when the moonlight starts to fade and the skies darken again. Later in the month, something more poetic will grace our skies. On August 26, westward just after sunset, there will be a delicate crescent moon hanging low in the sky and sitting right next to it will be a small, reddish dot and that's Mars. They'll be visible around 8:15 PM, close to the horizon and will appear to hover next to each other for about an hour before they fade away with the twilight. You don't need binoculars – just a clear view of the western sky. Maybe even a rooftop or balcony will do. August 12 (early morning): Venus and Jupiter will rise together in the eastern sky, super close, just 1° apart. They'll look like two very bright stars next to each other. August 19: Mercury will be at its best for viewing, east before sunrise. It's tiny and easy to miss, so try using a stargazing app to help you spot it. August 23: It's a New Moon, which means no moonlight at all, perfect for spotting fainter stars and maybe even the Milky Way. You don't need to be an astronomy expert to enjoy what the sky has to offer- just a little time and a patch of open sky. Intervention by Indian team helped fix key issue before Axiom-4 launch: ISRO chief
Weeks before it finally took off, the Axiom-4 mission, which carried Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and three other astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), was nearly cleared for launch despite a perceived minor oxygen leak — until an ISRO team insisted on further checks that revealed a potentially dangerous crack in the rocket, ISRO Chairperson Dr V Narayanan told The Indian Express. The Axiom-4 mission took off for space from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 25 after a series of delays since the initial launch date of May 29. The first launch was deferred to June 8 due to an electrical issue in the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft — the module where the crew was seated. But on June 8, when the engines were test-fired on ground, an oxygen leak was observed in addition to an anomaly in one of the actuators, used in controlling the direction of the rocket's thrust. Dr Narayanan told The Indian Express that the oxygen leak was deemed minor and unlikely to affect the launch, but the Indian team — 18 scientists including the ISRO chairman and the director of the Human Space Flight Centre — embedded with the Axiom-4 and NASA teams felt something was amiss and pushed for further checks. 'Initially the team thought that there was a minor leak and the mission could proceed as planned. But, the Indian team insisted that proper checks be carried out even if it meant delaying the mission. And it was good that the tests were carried out because a crack was detected, allowing for repair. It was resolved before the mission took off,' Dr Narayanan said. The crack was in the oxidiser line, which carries liquid oxygen to power the rocket — a serious safety risk, especially for a crewed mission. The crack and other issues were fixed, but on June 12 NASA announced it was working with Russian space agency Roscosmos to evaluate a leak in the Zvezda module, the Russian-built service module of the ISS that houses key life-support and docking systems. This further delayed the mission until the final launch two weeks. During the mission, the Indian team was present at both Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral where launch operations took place and at mission control in Houston, Texas, where real-time flight operations are managed — from crew health monitoring and communications to emergency response. Dr Narayanan described the mission as a significant step forward for ISRO's human spaceflight programme, with astronaut training emerging as its single most valuable takeaway. He said Indian scientists got hands-on exposure to how crewed missions are run — from making real-time decisions and interpreting telemetry data to monitoring astronaut health and responding to in-flight contingencies. 'It was like a classroom where we learnt a lot by working with the other teams there,' he said. 'The experience was important for understanding how human space missions are run at an operational level… The training of the astronaut — especially with someone as experienced as the commander — was a big learning experience for the Indian team.' Axiom-4 commander Peggy Whitson, a veteran astronaut, holds the record for the most number of days spent in space by an American or a woman — 695 days across multiple missions. India plans to build a sustained human spaceflight programme, with a space station targeted by 2035 and a human Moon mission by 2040. This will require setting up a permanent astronaut corps and regularly training new astronauts, like NASA and Roscosmos do. In addition to the training, Dr Narayanan said Shukla's experience of living in microgravity, staying in an isolated environment and returning to Earth would be invaluable for India's own programme. ISRO has asked Shukla to document his entire experience in detail. 'This,' Dr Narayanan said, 'would become teaching material for his fellow astronauts as well as the other astronauts to come.' Shukla, who returned to Earth with a splashdown on July 15, is currently undergoing reconditioning in the United States. He is expected to remain in quarantine until the first week of August, after which he will participate in a debriefing with NASA and return home by mid-August.

Scientists discover ‘Sixth Sense' in our gut that may control appetite
What if your gut was doing more than just digesting food? What if it was actually talking to your brain in real time about when to stop eating? That's exactly what scientists at Duke University have uncovered in a fascinating new study that may redefine what we consider a 'sense.' At the centre of this discovery is flagellin, an ancient protein found in the whip-like tail of bacteria called flagella. Researchers found that special nerve-like cells in our gut known as neuropods can detect flagellin. These neuropods then send signals directly to the brain through the vagus nerve, the body's longest autonomic nerve. This breakthrough, published in the journal Nature, suggests that our gut isn't just a digestive organ, it could house a 'neurobiotic sense' that helps regulate eating behaviour. Some scientists are even calling it our sixth sense. Neuropods in the gut contain a receptor called TLR5 (short for Toll-Like Receptor 5). When researchers gave mice a dose of flagellin, their TLR5 receptors triggered an appetite-suppressing response, the mice ate less than usual. But mice without this receptor didn't get the same 'full' signal and quickly gained weight. This means that the bacteria living inside us aren't just bystanders. They can actually influence how we feel and behave. 'We were curious whether the body could sense microbial patterns in real time, not just as an immune response but as a neural response that guides behaviour,' Dr. Diego Bohórquez, senior author of the study, was quoted in a press statement. More than just food Beyond hunger, the findings could have broader implications. If microbial proteins can influence our brain activity, then understanding the gut-brain connection could help in treating conditions like obesity, depression and anxiety, all of which are linked to both appetite and gut health. Scientists now plan to explore how different diets impact the microbiome and how that, in turn, affects our brain. The human microbiome contains roughly 100 trillion microbial cells.
