Helicopter crashes in northern India with 6 on board
GAURIKUND : A helicopter carrying six people crashed today in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, news agency ANI reported.
The aircraft had gone missing in the Gaurikund area of the state, ANI reported, citing an official.
Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in an X post that the state disaster response force (SDRF), local administration and other rescue teams were engaged in relief and rescue operations.
Broadcaster India Today cited officials as saying the helicopter lost course due to bad weather.

(AP pic) LOS ANGELES : Torrential rains triggered flash floods in New Mexico that killed at least three people yesterday, including two young children, and trapped dozens in homes and vehicles in the resort village of Ruidoso, a state emergency official and a village statement said. The children, aged four and seven years old, and a man were swept downstream and later found dead, the mountain resort village said late yesterday on its website, adding that rescue operations were underway. Dramatic video footage on social media and various news outlets showed an entire house, ripped from its foundations, careening downstream through the brown, muddy waters of the flood-engorged Rio Ruidoso, side-swiping trees as it went. 'I've seen the video. We don't know if anyone was in the house,' said Danielle Silva, a spokesman for the New Mexico department of homeland security and emergency management. Emergency teams organised by local law enforcement and the national guard conducted at least 85 swift-water rescues in and around Ruidoso, many of them people stranded in cars and homes by elevated flood waters, Silva said. Silva said the river had quickly risen by a provisional record of 6.2m at the peak of the flood, and as waters began to recede in the evening, authorities began searching for survivors in the debris. The latest floods come just four days after a deadly flash flood triggered by heavy rains along the Guadalupe River killed at least 109 people and left scores missing after ravaging a swathe of Texas Hill Country. In New Mexico, Silva said the severity of the debris flow was heightened by a flame-scarred landscape stripped of vegetation in a wildfire which was then followed by flooding that eroded the soil. Ruidoso, a popular summer retreat as well as ski resort nestled in the Sierra Blanca mountain range of south-central New Mexico, is located about 185km south of Albuquerque, the state's largest city.

A fresh spell of rains occured in the national capital on Monday morning with the India Meteorological Department forecast of moderate to heavy rainfall in the entire Delhi and NCR on July 14. 'As per the Indian Meteorological Department's forecast, Delhi is experiencing inclement weather conditions. Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free. Passengers are advised to consider alternative modes of transport, including Delhi Metro, to reach the airport and avoid potential delays,' the DIAL said in the travel advisory. Delhi, on Sunday, also witnessed heavy rainfall leading to waterlogging and traffic congestion in many parts of the national capital. A traffic jam was witnessed at Rajiv Chowk as vehicular movement slowed down, following heavy rainfall. Delhi has experienced incessant rainfall since Wednesday, causing waterlogging in several areas, including Bindapur in Uttam Nagar, where roads are submerged under water. Traffic also came to a standstill in many parts of the national capital following the heavy rainfall. (ANI)

Scores of people die each year during the rainy season due to flash floods and landslides across India, a country of 1.4 billion people. Rivers swollen by lashing rain – including the mighty Beas, which starts from the region's glacial peaks – disrupted several routes in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The 'cumulative damage' includes 69 people dead, and 110 others injured in different incidents over the past two weeks, the state's revenue department said in a statement. India's meteorological department yesterday issued a fresh alert for 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' in Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand, another picturesque Himalayan state popular with Indian tourists. India's annual monsoon season from June to September offers respite from the intense summer heat and is crucial for replenishing water supplies, but also brings widespread death and destruction.
