The Hindu16-07-2025
The High Grounds police on Wednesday arrested a 57-year-old gem merchant from Hyderabad for stealing valuables from foreign delegates in star hotels in the city.
The accused, Chintakindi Srinivasulu, was a gemstone trader who resided in an apartment in Hyderabad. Srinivasulu would gather details about conferences held in star hotels from the media and attend them, posing as a delegate.
The accused would target foreign delegates and steal their valuables, especially foreign currency, Hakay Akshay Machindra, DCP (Central Division), said. With his arrest, the police have recovered $270 USD, $2,900 TWD (Taiwanese currency), $2,000 AUD (Australian currency), and 10,000 LAK (Lao currency) from him.
The accused had attended a conference at the Shangri-La Hotel in June this year and stole $300 USD and $ 3,000 TWD from a delegate identified as Roger Ninepo Sheng. Based on a complaint, the police tracked down the accused through technical evidence found at the scene of the crime. The accused is involved in two such cases, including one within the Sadashiva Nagar police station limits this year. The police are further investigating to ascertain his criminal background.

‘Same man, same conclusion': Australian state MP found guilty of raping, sexually assaulting 2 men 2 years apart

An Australian state MP has been found guilty of raping a man and sexually assaulting another in separate incidents that happened two years apart. Gareth Ward, 44, the independent MP for Kiama in New South Wales, was convicted by a jury on Friday at the Downing Centre District Court. He was found guilty of three counts of indecent assault against an 18-year-old man in 2013 and one count of sexual intercourse without consent involving a 24-year-old man in 2015. Prosecutors said the two men did not know each other but gave very similar accounts of what happened. 'Similar behaviour, similar setting, same man, same conclusion. This is not a coincidence,' Crown prosecutor Monika Knowles told the jury, The Independent reported. Ward denied all charges. He claimed the 2015 incident did not happen and said the 2013 incident was being misremembered by the complainant. The defence argued the allegations were false. Earlier, the court heard that in 2013, Ward invited the teenager, who had been drinking, to his South Coast home and assaulted him three times despite his efforts to resist. In 2015, Ward raped a staff member who was intoxicated after an event at the NSW Parliament House. Ward has been granted bail and is living at one of his two homes. A court will consider whether to detain him next Wednesday, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. He first entered the state parliament as a Liberal MP in 2011 and was made a minister after the 2019 election. He left the Liberal Party in 2021 after revealing that he was being investigated by police. He continued as an independent and was re-elected in 2023. Mark Speakman, leader of the opposition in the NSW parliament, said he respected the jury's decision. 'What any victim of sexual abuse endures is appalling and their strength in coming forward can't be overstated,' he said, as quoted by The Independent. 'There is no excuse for the criminal behaviour which the jury has found occurred beyond reasonable doubt — a complete abuse of power which has no place anywhere, let alone by those entrusted by the public to represent them.'

Man held for posing as gangster to extort Rs 1 crore from Delhi businessman

New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly posing as gangster Naveen Bali and demanding Rs 1 crore from a Delhi-based businessman, police said on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Bhisham Singh said, 'On July 24, the complainant approached the Adarsh Nagar police station and reported that he had received a threatening phone call earlier this month. In his complaint, the businessman said he received a call on July 3 from an unknown number." The caller, identified as gangster Naveen Bali, demanded Rs 1 crore, warning of dire consequences if the demand was not fulfilled within four days, he added. Initially dismissing the call as a prank, the complainant ignored it. However, on July 20 at around 8:28 pm, he received another call from the same number, during which the demand was repeated, the DCP said. Alarmed by the persistent threats, the complainant finally approached the police. A case under section 308(4) (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered, and an investigation was initiated, the DCP added. During the investigation, police noted that the caller spoke in a distinct Haryanvi accent. Through technical surveillance and manual intelligence, the team zeroed in on Sanjay as a suspect. A trap was laid, and he was arrested, police said. 'During his interrogation, Sanjay confessed to impersonating gangster Naveen Bali to demand money from the businessman. He revealed that he had earlier worked in several private offices in Delhi, but had left due to dissatisfaction with the salary," DCP Singh said. The accused, identified as Sanjay (50), conspired with Rahul Rathi, the victim's associate, who was familiar with his business operations, police said. During the arrest, the police recovered a handwritten slip with the targeted businessman's phone number. No previous criminal involvement has been found against Sanjay so far, police added. Further investigation into the matter is underway. PTI SSJ SMV HIG view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 18:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Delhi: Gang stealing SUVs busted; vehicles worth over Rs 1 cr recovered

Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing SUVs in Delhi and selling them across multiple states, the police said on Saturday, adding that vehicles worth over Rs 1 crore were recovered. The accused were identified as Ashraf Sultan, a habitual offender, and Irshad alias Baba, who operated a garage that doubled as a hub for dismantling and modifying stolen cars, the police said. 'The gang operated using master keys to gain access to vehicles, and then affixed fake registration plates to avoid detection. They targeted luxury vehicles due to their high resale value in under-regulated second-hand markets," Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania said. The police also recovered a pistol, multiple master keys, fake number plates, and five stolen SUVs in a series of raids across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, he noted. 'Based on specific intelligence about Ashraf Sultan, who had recently resumed vehicle thefts after being released from jail, he was apprehended during a raid near Nala Road in Ghazipur. He was found carrying a loaded pistol and failed to produce ownership documents for the car he was driving," the DCP added. The police later verified the engine and chassis number of the vehicle and found that it had been reported stolen. A fresh case under the Arms Act was registered at the Ghazipur Police Station. During interrogation, Ashraf revealed that he was part of an organised syndicate that stole vehicles in Delhi and transported them to Meerut and other regions in the country. The stolen vehicles were given fake number plates and sold in states such as Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Kolkata, the DCP explained. Ashraf also mentioned Irshad, who operated a garage in Bilaspur, which was used for storing and modifying stolen vehicles. Based on his disclosures, a police team raided the garage and recovered an SUV and a dismantled car engine, both of which were later confirmed to have been stolen from Hauz Khas and Vivek Vihar in Delhi. Further raids were conducted near Noor Nagar Colony in Murad Nagar, Ghaziabad, where two more stolen SUVs were recovered. These vehicles were linked to motor vehicle theft cases from Pandav Nagar and Mandawali, according to the police. Ashraf has a history of arrests, with 16 previous criminal cases, including those under the Arms Act and multiple vehicle thefts. Irshad has been linked to at least two past cases involving receiving stolen property and destroying evidence, the police said. Police believe the gang is part of a larger network of accomplices, and efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining suspects, identified as Sakir alias Gaddu, Ujair, and Rashid alias Kala.
