‘We've only half the job done' – Athlone's Shauna Brennan targets Champions League progression with tough four-day turnaround
A reward for Wednesday's 4-0 trouncing of Welsh side Cardiff City was another qualifier, also at home, against a more experienced Agram from Croatia, where the winners of that one-legged tie will move into the semi-final stage of the qualification rounds, where likes of Roma and Sparta Prague are already through with a bye. Athlone's players were all making their Champions League debuts against Cardiff and they are keen to extend their European season as far as possible. "It'll definitely be a different challenge on Saturday and we're expecting that. We know that we've only half the job done. Wednesday means nothing without Saturday so that's our focus,' says Athlone's Galway-born Shauna Brennan. "We know they're going to be a new challenge, they're going to be a good side. They've won the Croatian League but we'll look at their key players and we'll be ready for whatever comes at us.' Town's home ground was packed for the Cardiff game and another sell-out is expected for the visit of the Croatians as Brennan says that – despite the gloss of that 4-0 scoreline – the crowd did play a role. 'We haven't had a crowd like that before. It was a record crowd so it was great to see the support from everybody in Athlone to actually sell out the stadium. We were hoping it would be a sell out but obviously that depends on the fans and it was great to see them all come out and they're in blue and black,' she says. "I think it helped us in the first 10 minutes. We hit the ground running and I think the crowd really got behind us to do that and it helped us to win them tackles, the cheers from the crowd. They definitely did help us to get up for the game and be ready.' With a debate within the game overall about recovery and a mandated rest period between games, it's a big ask for the Athlone players – many of whom are part-time – to turn around and play two Champions League ties in four days. "It's tough,' says Brennan, who parked her Gaelic football career with Galway to focus on soccer with Athlone. 'We do have a lot of players that are full-time in Athlone but then there's the likes of myself and some of the other girls that are working or in college. "We stayed up on Wednesday night to get our recovery in and we'll do a light session on Friday night, a walkthrough probably and we'll be ready to go.'

Miyu Yamashita sets pace at Women's Open as Leona Maguire makes cut
IRELAND'S LEONA Maguire made the cut while Lottie Woad lost further ground at the AIG Women's Open after a triple bogey in her second-round score of 70 left her nine shots behind leader Miyu Yamashita on two under. The Cavan native is tied for 37th on one over par after a 73 on day two. The 30-year-old registered a birdie on the sixth hole, but bogeys on the 11th and 16th left her trailing Yamashita by 12 shots. Both Maguire and fellow Irish star Lauren Walsh began with even-par opening rounds of 72. Dubliner Walsh had a difficult day two as she finished just below the projected cut line on three over par. The 24-year-old struggled for consistency, registering four birdies and seven bogeys, resulting in a second-round score of 75 that left her tied for 71st. Woad, tournament favourite in just her second event as a professional after winning the Scottish Open last week, was on the charge after her sixth birdie of the day at the 14th before suffering a big setback at the par-four 16th. Advertisement Japan's Yamashita followed her first-round 68 with a bogey-free 65 to open up a three-shot lead over compatriot and joint overnight leader Rio Takeda, who carded a 69 on another blustery day at Royal Porthcawl. Switzerland's Chiara Tamburlini, Thailand's Pajaree Anannarukarn and American Lindy Duncan are all tied for third, four shots further back on four under. Another big group, including 2021 Women's Open winner Madelene Sagstrom and Germany's Laura Fuenfstueck – still out on the course having played 12 holes – are tied on three under. Woad, Wales' Darcey Harry and American world number one Nelly Korda are among another group of eight, are tied in 11th on two under. Surrey's Woad, who also won the Irish Open and finished tied for third at The Evian Championship in her final weeks as an amateur, began the day five shots behind the leaders after a first-round level-par 72. The 21-year-old parred the first five holes on Friday before birdies at the sixth and eighth took her to the turn on two under. Four more birdies and a bogey in the next five holes lifted her up to fifth on the leaderboard on five under, but after another par at the 15th, a penalty drop at the 16th, where she two-putted after chipping on to the green, saw her drop three shots. Woad told Sky Sports: 'It's probably playing the toughest hole of the day. I hit a good drive but pushed the three-wood a bit and it went in the one thick bit over there. 'I got a bit unlucky with that but then took my medicine afterwards and ended up making a seven. 'I'm happy with how I recovered after it. I was a bit angry after that but I just had to move on quickly.' Woad parred the final two holes – she missed a birdie putt on the 18th – to finish the second round alongside 22-year-old Harry as the highest-placed home nations players. Harry followed up her opening-round 70 with a 72, which could have been better but for double bogeys at the 10th and 15th. Mimi Rhodes, the leading Brit heading into the day after an opening-round 69, carded a 74 to sit in a big group tied in 19th place on one under, while Charley Hull is a shot further back, tied in 29th place, after she birdied the last for a 71. New Zealand's defending champion Lydia Ko slipped out of contention after posting a second successive 73 to sit two over, while American Lillia Vu, the 2023 Open champion, missed the cut after rounds of 74 and 77 left her seven over. West Ham's Lucas Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges
LUCAS PAQUETA HAS been cleared of misconduct charges related to alleged breaches of the English Football Association's betting rules, his club West Ham have announced. The Brazilian was charged with four alleged breaches of FA Rule E5.1 by the FA in May 2024 in relation to matches involving West Ham. It was alleged Paqueta directly sought to influence matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market, in order for one or more persons to profit from betting. He denied the charges and an independent regulatory commission found the charges not proven following a hearing. The English FA said two charges against Paqueta related to a failure to co-operate with its investigation had been found proven. The English FA said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches 'at the earliest opportunity'. Advertisement The games Paqueta had allegedly sought to influence were the Hammers' Premier League matches against Leicester on 12 November, 2022, Aston Villa on 12 March, 2023, Leeds on 21 May, 2023 and Bournemouth on 12 August, 2023. Paqueta said in quotes released via the club: 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.' West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady added: 'We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. 'He has maintained his innocence from the outset and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process. 'Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. 'It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout and he is now looking forward to drawing a line under this episode, as is everyone at West Ham United.' Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: 'Few cases carry the gravity of this one – professionally, personally and emotionally for our client. 'Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience. 'Level is delighted that we've been able to help demonstrate that Lucas' integrity as a player and a person is in no doubt. 'Now, he can finally get back to focusing on the things that matter most to him – playing football and being with his family.' The English FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time.
