Denis Arndt, Tony-nominated star of ‘Heisenberg' and veteran of David E. Kelley TV shows, dies
Arndt died 'peacefully in his bed' at his cabin home in Ashland, Oregon, his family announced in an obituary published March 26. It noted that he was born in 1939, the same year 'The Wizard of Oz' came out.
'That was like Dad's life,' it said. 'It started out in black and white and blossomed into a life of color, brilliance, daring adventure and passion. And it was also a little bit trippy, like Oz.'
Arndt was a Vietnam veteran helicopter pilot who twice was awarded the Purple Heart and later flew helicopters in Alaska. He turned to acting after moving to Seattle, spending multiple seasons at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and performing as an early member of the Intiman Theatre in Seattle.
His career began in the mid-1980s with roles on the TV shows 'Crime Story' and 'Wiseguy,' and he would spend the 1990s in TV and film, with a highlight being one of the cops interrogating Sharon Stone's character in Paul Verhoeven's 'Basic Instinct.'
Making his first and only Broadway appearance at age 77 opposite Mary-Louise Parker, Arndt received acclaim for his performance in 'Heisenberg,' which debuted off-Broadway in 2015 before hitting Broadway a year later.
In the play by Simon Stephens, babble-mouthed 42-year-old Georgie from New Jersey randomly meets a bored 75-year-old Irish butcher, Alex, in a London train station and the two begin a strange courtship.
The Associated Press was charmed by the performers and Stephens' play: 'He captures new love and old love at the same time, hope and fear, the new world and the old. He's turned the simplest of tales — boy meets girl — into an unexpectedly rich thing with just two chairs, two tables and two actors.'
On TV, Arndt was a frequent Kelly collaborator, starting with 'L.A. Law' and then as lawyer Franklin Dell on 'Picket Fences' over four seasons. He also had roles on 'Chicago Hope,' 'Ally McBeal,' 'The Practice,' 'Boston Public,' 'Boston Legal' and 'Mr. Mercedes.'
His other small-screen credits include 'Providence, 'The Wonder Years,' 'Murder, She Wrote,' 'Life Goes On,' 'Herman's Head,' 'Touched by an Angel,' 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'The Good Fight.'
He is survived by his wife, Magee, and his children, Scott, Tammy, Laurie, Kirsten, Bryce, McKenna and Tanner.

She'd just auditioned for a part in Fiddler on the Roof and it had gone excellently but if the directors had any doubts, she had already secured one fan. 6 6 'A fellow actor approached and told me that if I didn't get the part they were crazy,' Samantha, 38, recalls. 'He introduced himself as Jacob and we wished each other luck. ' Auditions were often cold and competitive environments, so it stuck out to me that he'd been so sweet.' Not long after Samantha received the news she was hoping for, she had secured the part and much to her delight so had Jacob. A month later they began rehearsals and Samantha and Jacob became fast friends. 'A few days into rehearsals, we went out for drinks with another cast member,' Samantha says. 'While they headed off after a couple of rounds, Jacob and I kept chatting till 4am, and he ended up sleeping on my sofa. 'From then on, we hung out whenever we could, grabbing dinner or going to the gym. 'Jacob told me he was gay, but that he wasn't out to his parents yet.' But while Samantha was secure in their friendship it seems others were less so. I'm much taller than my 5ft husband - people think he's my son and say he's not a 'real man' but we have the best sex ever 'Friends would ask if we were dating,' Samantha says. 'I knew we had something special but I wasn't sure what. 'Jacob and I never wanted to be apart from each other, even sleeping in the same bed after nights out. 'And something between us just didn't feel like a normal friendship but I just assumed I must have misinterpreted things.' After 18 months as best pals Samantha visited an energy healer for advice on her relationship with Jacob. 'She told me the two of us shared a 'spiritual umbilical cord',' Samantha says. 'With that, everything clicked into place for me. 'I didn't want to live with the uncertainty any more, and I was sure that, come what may, our friendship was strong enough to survive.' 6 6 Samantha plucked up the courage and sent Jacob a text asking whether he felt anything more than friendship for her. 'A few minutes later he replied telling me that of course he felt more than friendship and he was willing to see where this went,' Samantha says. 'I was as giddy as a teenager.' That weekend, Jacob and Samantha were both due to attend a friend's birthday party. 'When I saw him at the party, it wasn't awkward at all, and afterwards we headed back to my place,' she says. 'We were watching a film in bed, and he leant over and kissed me. 'It felt so natural and it made me wonder why we'd waited so long. 'We slept together that night and it was totally magical and romantic, like a Hollywood film.' From then on Jacob and Samantha were a couple. She says: 'None of our friends were surprised, and plenty of them asked what had taken us so long. 'I'd met his parents before, and when Jacob called his mum to tell her we were dating, she was so happy she cried.' The couple moved in immediately and began building their life together. 'Jacob was such a care-taker, always bringing me coffee or cooking us dinner,' Samantha says. 'But as the honeymoon period faded, we both began to worry whether the relationship would work long-term. 'I worried I was trapping him or taking him away from a man but he always assured me he wasn't missing out. 'Yet he was still feeling anger and frustration from not having fully come out to his parents.' One afternoon when Samantha was visiting her family she had a call from Jacob. He explained that he had come out to his dad but was still in a relationship with Samantha. 'His dad was confused but accepting and Jacob said it was a huge relief,' she says. 'He explained that living a seemingly 'straight' life, without being fully open about his sexuality, had been driving him crazy.' From then on it was smoother sailing for the pair, who began seeing a couples' therapist together. Samantha says: 'To our surprise she told us she was also in a mixed-orientation relationship – she considered herself straight, but was married to a woman. 'It was a revelation to realise our situation wasn't totally unique. 'Jacob told me he wasn't bisexual and was solely attracted to men, and that's important to his identity. 'But he explained that I was his soulmate and that's its own star in another galaxy.' While friends worried that her relationship might make her feel less physically desirable Samantha said it was quite the opposite. 'He doesn't just see me as body parts but as a whole,' she says. 'Jacob told me that he'd initially been concerned about whether the physical aspect of the relationship would work, but in the moment it had felt completely right.' After six years together, the couple went ring shopping. Then, just a few months later, Jacob proposed to Samantha on a red carpet outside the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. 'Both of us had our own ideas for the wedding – from Jacob's Phantom of the Opera entrance music, to my Titanic-themed wedding cake,' she says. There were 35 guests in attendance, including both of their families. After the marriage ceremony, the couple posted a selection of photographs online. 'I'm marrying a gay man at the court house! I captioned it, cheekily,' Samantha says. 'We were flooded with questions – with people even saying our relationship was a tax dodge. 'Loads of commenters wanted to know whether we slept together.' Samantha made a TikTok video in a bid to clear things up. 'We have a great sex life, and we have sex the traditional way,' she explained to her followers. 'If you need us to tell you about the birds and the bees, then that's not our problem.' "We don't have an open marriage either - we're 100% monogamous to each other." The couple received messages from others in mixed-orientation relationships too. 'It just shows it's more common than you'd think,' she says. 'Now we've been married for six months, and we're trying for a baby. 'My husband may be gay, but I'm 100 per cent sure he's the man for me.' 6

Guilsfield Singers' concert 'uplifting and joyful'
A choir concert has been described as uplifting, joyful and passionate. The Guilsfield Singers performed to a full house at Guilsfield Community Centre on July 19, delivering a diverse and moving programme under the direction of James Llewelyn Jones and Sarah Garrett. The concert, titled Broadway & Beyond, featured powerful renditions of African Prayer and World in Union, alongside gentler pieces such as Tears in Heaven and For the Beauty of the Earth. Associate musical director James Llewelyn Jones said: "I can't tell you how proud I am of what we have achieved together in just 10 weeks. "The choir's enthusiasm and willingness to be open-minded enough to try so many different tools and techniques to literally transform their singing has been incredible to witness. "It's truly remarkable." Guest soloist Grace Farrell was praised for her performances of songs from Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, Carousel, Jesus Christ Superstar and Show Boat. A highlight of the evening was an extended Rodgers & Hammerstein medley, bookended by Ms Farrell's performances of The Sound of Music and You'll Never Walk Alone. Audience members described the concert as "a great evening", "very professional", and "wonderful singing", with many saying they were already "looking forward to the next one." Teresa Jones, chairman of the choir, said: "Talking to audience members afterwards was a complete joy. "They loved every minute of the concert and could not believe the beauty of our singing." The following day, the choir performed at the Mayor's Service at St Mary's Church, supporting tenors Mayor Phil Owen and Deputy Mayor Bill Rowell. The choir's next event is an A to Z Choral Day, open to all, on Saturday, September 13 at Guilsfield Community Centre. The event will run from 10.30am to 4pm and will feature choral works from Ave Verum Corpus to Zadok the Priest. Entry is £10, with free admission for students.

Hacks star Jean Smart, 73, walks with a cane after knee surgery following a scary fall in NYC
Jean Smart was seen struggling as she walked with a cane in New York City on Tuesday morning. The 73-year-old Hacks actress had on a white-and-black striped blazer with a cream-colored camisole and white slacks with blue sneakers. There was a long blue ombre scarf over her yellow curlers as she added prescription glasses while wearing minimal makeup. Two handlers were with her to guide the acting stalwart to the sidewalk. This comes just a week after she revealed that she suffered a painful knee injury that kept her from her stage play for two weeks. Smart hurt herself on the 4th of July while walking around New York City with her sons. The Designing Woman star told People she 'went down like a ton of bricks' when she tripped over a 'hockey-puck-sized' base of a barrier on the ground, which she said, 'keep cars from cutting the corners too close, I think.' It is an apparently common occurrence in New York City. Smart explained, 'As I was sitting there in the street waiting for the ambulance, a guy came along and tripped over the same thing.' When she arrived at the small hospital which first treated her, Smart's assumption was conferred with the health worker told her, 'Oh, I, I know exactly what you're talking about. We get one a day.' The actress, who has been nominated for another Emmy for her role as comedienne Debra Vance in Hacks, has been wowing audiences in her one-woman show Call Me Izzy on Broadway. 'And that's in a tiny little hospital. I said, "Well, how come nobody's screaming bloody murder about it?"' Her conclusion was 'People in New York, they put up with a lot. They just kinda shrug and go, "Eh, what are you gonna do?"' The Big Mouth actress was later transferred to another hospital where a 'really wonderful surgeon' operated on her knee July 8, the same day the Call Me Izzy Instagram page announced her absence. The production joyfully announced Smart's return in its Instagram Stories on Tuesday. 'Tonight! Welcome Back Jean' was written over a promotional video for the show. The plan was for Smart to return to the stage wearing a leg brace. 'I won't be doing as much as I was physically, although it's a one-person show — it's not like I was doing big tap numbers and somersaulting across the stage,' she told the outlet. 'Some one-person shows they just sort of sit and talk. So hopefully the audience won't be disappointed. I don't think they will be. It's such an amazing story.' The plot follows Isabell, a Louisiana woman trapped in an abusive marriage. She hopes her gift for writing poetry might be her way out. Tony winner Johanna Day stepped in to cover for Smart during her medical leave. The actress will have to wear her knee-brace on stage, but hopes the audience will 'see it for two seconds, they won't notice it, and they'll just enjoy the story.' During a run-through ahead of Tuesday's performance Smart revealed having the brace added something new to her performance. 'It added an interesting element to the feeling of the character feeling trapped,' she explained. 'So that was kind of an interesting thing to notice,' Smart said of the experience. 'And because I can't really act from my head to my toes like I usually do, I almost felt like — because I'm now acting mostly from the waist up — it actually seemed to energize me vocally.' As she works to recover from her injury she admitted, 'I'm not sure what kind of strength I'll have in that leg, and bending will be a slow process, but hopefully by the time we close, I'll be skipping around.'
