Ahmedabad: What happens when you score consistently above the 99th percentile, receive call letters from almost all IIMs, but fail to convert it into admission to your dream IIM? Some may move on or accept what's on offer, but not Vyom Vasavada.
This Rajkot lad set his eyes on IIM Bangalore (IIM-B) as his dream destination and held on to his dream. In the third attempt, he again scored marks that put him into the 99.93rd percentile and got him on the first merit list!
"It was always the dream. The kind of leadership culture, academic excellence, and peer learning it fosters, I knew I wanted to be part of this environment," Vyom told TOI from the IIM-B campus.
Vyom completed his BTech in mechanical engineering from Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) in Gandhinagar.
He later pursued an MTech in aerospace engineering from IIT Bombay. After completing the course in 2021, he joined HCL Technologies and later worked with a leading multinational brand in Bengaluru.

It was this stint that fuelled his aspiration to be in a leadership role. "I was vying to lead, innovate, and make strategic decisions that shape the future. I thus gravitated towards an MBA," said Vyom.
He appeared in the Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2022 when he was among the students who scored in the 99.85th percentile.

Despite the impressive score, he could not make it to the top. Undeterred, he prepared for CAT again in 2023 and secured a position in the 99.94th percentile. On the waitlist for IIM-B, he missed out by just seven positions. But the third time was the charm when he made it to his dream B-school.
Satish Kumar, Vyom's mentor in his journey for CAT, said that IIM-B not only rewards 2-3 years of work experience but also gives a multiplier score ranging from 0.25 to 2 based on the quality of work experience that helped Vyom secure the seat.
"It can be seen as a combination of his perseverance, academic profile, and professional background," he added.
Satish Kumar, Vyom's mentor added that for the category Vyom belonged to – general, engineering, male, popularly known as GEM – the competition is stiff. Securing a spot for GEM at top IIMs is an uphill task given the volume of high-performing aspirants and limited seats, he added.
"I always believed I could do it—it was just a matter of when," said Vyom, adding that his two attempts also helped him prepare better. "I would tell other aspirants not to lose heart and prepare with much more conviction and always learn from mistakes."
He wishes to work for a few years after graduation before branching out on his own to fulfil his entrepreneurial ambitions.

₹93.5 crore flood work set to begin along Madurai's Panthalkudi Channel

Madurai: To mitigate flooding during the monsoon, the water resources department (WRD) is set to launch ₹93.5 crore worth of flood control work along the Panthalkudi Channel and surrounding areas. The project includes constructing reinforced cement concrete (RCC) retaining walls on both sides of the canal and upgrading existing culverts to improve water flow and prevent breaches during heavy rainfall. WRD officials said tenders will be floated this week, and a government order is expected soon. Of the total cost, ₹63.5 crore has been earmarked for the retaining walls along Panthalkudi, and ₹6.9 crore for revamping six existing culverts. Additional flood protection measures are also planned for Eachan Oadai near Mattuthavani and low-lying areas in Uthangudi, which were flooded during last year's rains. The Panthalkudi channel, which carries overflow from the Sellur tank to the Vaigai, is one of the city's oldest and most vital water channels. However, unchecked sewage discharge and garbage dumping have turned it into an open drain. "The stench is unbearable, and the canal overflows onto the streets during rains," said M Saravanan, a Sellur resident. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Official IQ Test: What is Your IQ? | Answer 30 Questions to Find Out IQ International Undo "Sewage from several wards enters the canal. What's the point of underground drainage if it doesn't work?" he added. Chief minister M K Stalin had inspected the channel on May 31 and directed civic officials to expedite the restoration. But delays have sparked public concern ahead of the northeast monsoon. "This isn't just an infrastructure issue — it's a matter of public health and safety. The work must start immediately before the next round of rains," said M Sankara Pandian, a civic activist from Sellur. MSID:: 122936201 413 |

Association urges Madurai corporation to open school for special kids

Madurai: The Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) has urged Madurai corporation to establish a dedicated school for special children. At the association's conference in Madurai on Sunday, A Balamurugan, district secretary of TARATDAC, said, "There is no corporation-run special school in Madurai. Inclusive education infrastructure is essential, along with accessible toilets, reserved parking, and 5% shop allocation in corporation markets for disabled." Nearly 200 people from across the district took part in the meeting. While the association acknowledged that Madurai has made some progress in supporting persons with disabilities, it noted that basic facilities are still inadequate. Members pointed out that even dispersing disabled protesters becomes an ordeal due to the absence of a proper vehicle or support system. The association also sought monthly pension of 6,000 for all people with disabilities and 15,000 for bedridden individuals. "At present, most receive only 300 under the Indira Gandhi Pension Scheme," a member said, adding that financial stress forces many to compromise on their health and lodging. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pune: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo It also sought the removal of the 80% disability threshold for central assistance, arguing that many in the lesser levels of disability face serious hardship. TARATDAC also flagged concerns over accessibility at the Madurai railway station. "Wheelchairs must be available on platforms, and drinking water taps should be at usable heights," said a member. They also called for disability-friendly waiting halls and accurate medical certificates indicating the extent of disability. The association also sought free land pattas, priority housing under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam scheme, 35kg of rice under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, a separate TNPSC exam, fee exemptions for disabled students in govt and aided colleges, and job reservations in public and private sectors.
