Hao Sheng prepared for Davis Cup double duty

KUALA LUMPUR: Koay Hao Sheng is looking forward to taking on a new role as Davis Cup playing captain for the men's national tennis squad later this month.
Malaysia will be playing in Group IV of the Asia-Oceania competition on July 14-19 with home ground advantage at the National Tennis Centre here.
Hao Sheng tasted his first experience as captain of the Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) women's squad last month and led the team to a respectable top-four finish in the Asia-Oceania Group II competition which was also held in Kuala Lumpur.
"I am looking forward to being the playing captain for the Davis Cup," said Hao Sheng when met recently.
"I have played in the Davis Cup many times before but this time it will be more challenging as I will also be coaching.
"I will have to manage my recovery between matches more carefully as I will be on court (coaching courtside) throughout the day.
"I enjoyed my experience as BJKC captain and I learnt a lot. The players, association and head coach (Muliyadi Jamal) have been very supportive of me.
"Having said that, there is still a lot more I can learn in terms of understanding the players and how to communicate effectively with them."
Hao Sheng is set to turn 27 later this month but has already been a staple of the national squad for almost a decade now.
The Davis Cup squad will be on a mission to secure promotion after being relegated from Group III last year.
The other nations in Group IV, which is the second lowest tier of the competition, are Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Iraq, Nepal, Philippines, Malaysia as well as Pacific Oceania who were relegated alongside Malaysia from Group III last season.

‘Once-in-a-decade' heatwave grips Japan, alerts issued after Tokyo breaches safe limits

TOKYO, July 6 — Japan is sweltering under an intense heatwave, with temperatures hitting the high 30s across much of the country today, prompting authorities to issue heatstroke alerts in 19 prefectures — including the first warnings this year for central Tokyo and neighbouring Kanagawa. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the current heatwave is expected to persist until mid-July, marking a rare occurrence 'seen only once in a decade.' The agency attributes the extreme weather to climate change and a stronger-than-usual Pacific high-pressure system that has brought an unusually early end to the rainy season in western Japan. The Japan Times reported today that temperatures climbed to 38.3C in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, 37.9C in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, and 37.7C in several cities including Tajimi in Gifu, Hamamatsu in Shizuoka, and Kofu in Yamanashi. The Japan Sport Association advises cancelling outdoor sporting events if the heat index — which factors in temperature, humidity and solar radiation — exceeds 31. In Tokyo, the index reached 32.2C by 11am, prompting the Japan Association of Athletics Federations to reschedule events during its three-day national championships at the Japan National Stadium in Shinjuku. Today's adjustments followed similar delays on Friday and Saturday. The early heat has been exacerbated by the premature conclusion of the rainy season in regions such as Chugoku, Shikoku, Kinki, and northern Kyushu, where the season ended nearly 20 days ahead of schedule — the earliest on record. June was Japan's hottest ever, with average temperatures 2.34C above the historical norm, the Meteorological Agency said. The trend is in line with rising global temperatures, as the agency warned that climate patterns are shifting due to global warming and changing wind systems. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions against heatstroke, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activity during peak hours, and seeking cooler indoor environments.

JDT add Brazil-born Figueiredo to heritage player ranks

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) may have won the Super League 11 consecutive times, but that doesn't mean they are about to rest on their laurels. And the Southern Tigers have wasted no time in strengthening their squad by adding new national heritage player Joao Figueiredo to their ranks as they set their sights on conquering everything in front of them in the coming season. The signing, announced via the club's official social media platforms today, also stated that the Brazilian-born forward will don the No. 25 jersey. 'Joao Figueiredo brings his commitment and determination to Johor Darul Ta'zim FC. Joao Figueiredo makes Johor home with a move to the Southern Tigers,' the club added. Figueiredo joins JDT from Istanbul Basaksehir, where he grabbed seven goals and two assists in the Turkish Super League last season. The 29-year-old announced his arrival in style when he scored the opening goal en route to helping the Harimau Malaya to a 4-0 win over Vietnam in second 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifying match at Bukit Jalil National Stadium here on June 10. With Figueiredo joining their ranks, JDT now have three heritage players to spearhead their Super League challenge, with the other two being Dutch-Malaysian midfielder Hector Hevel and Spanish-Malaysian centreback Jon Irazabal. — Bernama

Novak Djokovic Hits 100 Wins at Wimbledon with Dominant 3-0

SEVEN-TIMES Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic roared his way to a rare century at the grasscourt Grand Slam on Saturday when he outclassed Serbian compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 6-0 6-4 and reached the fourth round in his quest for a record 25th major. The sixth seed's stellar display ensured that he became only the third player to claim 100 match wins on the All England Club lawns after nine-times champion Martina Navratilova and eight-times winner Roger Federer. Djokovic started and finished the opening set with aces and grabbed the decisive break during the see-sawing eighth game. At one point he had the Centre Court crowd standing in ovation when he produced a spectacular diving winner at the net. His 49th-ranked Davis Cup teammate cracked on serve in the opening game of the second set and allowed Djokovic to quickly reel off the games and double his advantage in what suddenly became a lopsided contest. Kecmanovic raised his fist to applause when he stemmed the flow at the start of the third set but a double fault gifted his opponent the break in the third game and there was no stopping Djokovic as he booked a clash with 11th seed Alex de Minaur.
