Durand Cup 2025: Kokrajhar welcomes football's grand return with a spectacular opening ceremony
The grand opening ceremony was graced by Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) as Chief Guest, and Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command and Patron of the Durand Cup Organising Committee (DCOC), along with other dignitaries.
Also present were Dasho Dr. Lotay Tshering, former Prime Minister of Bhutan and Guest of Honour, and Indian football legend

The political leadership of Assam and Bodoland was represented by Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Minister for Handloom, Textile and Sericulture, Soil Conservation and Welfare of Bodoland Department; Rwngwra Narzary, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha; and Shri Joyanta Basumatary, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha.
Senior officers of the armed forces, including Lt. Gen. Gambhir Singh (GOC 4 Corps), Major Gen. Rajesh Arun Moghe (GOC Bengal Sub Area & Vice Chairman, DCOC), Maj.
Gen. Rohin Bawa (GOC 21 Mountain) and Brig. Akshay Kapoor (Commander 107 Mountain Brigade), were also in attendance. Speaking on the occasion, Pramod Boro said, 'We are writing a new story where football has taken the role of harmony in Kokrajhar. We have given the youth a platform through football to give them more confidence to move ahead in life.
Football has united our villages and has given us a path to move forward.
Sports have played a huge role in eliminating violence from Bodoland. I am thankful to the Indian Armed Forces on behalf of the people of Bodoland by bringing the Durand Cup to Bodoland Territorial Region for the third consecutive time. I also thank all the people of the organising committee, SAI and everyone else involved for working towards a successful Durand Cup.'
Football icon Sunil Chhetri inspired the packed stadium with his words and said, 'I hope that everyone realises that whatever you want to dream in sports, it is not too far.
Nothing changes or galvanizes a place better than sports and football is the best sport in the country to do that and I urge everyone to make use of the facilities that are provided. I thank the people of Bodoland for all the warmth, and I wish everyone the best of luck.

Joi Baruah and his band entertained fans before and during halftime, while a recorded message by the Hon'ble President of India unveiling the Durand Cup trophies in Delhi (on July 4) was screened during the felicitation of dignitaries.
The cultural richness of Assam was on full display with Bagurumba, Bihu, Bardwi Sikhla and Dahal Thungri performances. In parallel, the crowd witnessed aeromodelling stunts and an exhilarating Paramotor fly-past by the 10 PARA Special Forces. Artist Geeta Shri energised the crowd with a rendition of

, followed by a thrilling Khukri performance by the Gorkha regiment.
The highlight of the evening came with a fly-past by Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter jets of the Indian Air Force, leaving the stadium in awe. Chenda Drummers with Kalaripayattu (Kerala's martial art) and Chau dancers from West Bengal brought the cultural segment to a powerful close.

Odisha FC suspend contracts of men's team
Kolkata: Days after being part of joint initiative seeking a meeting with All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey regarding the uncertainty of the Indian Super League (ISL) season, Odisha FC suspended contracts of players and staff with effect from Tuesday. (Adimazes) The 2023-24 Super Cup runners-up, who have skipped the ongoing Durand Cup, are the first ISL team to invoke the force majeure clause because the future of India's top tier football competition is unknown. The letter sent to players and staff on Friday says that the start of 2025-26 ISL season has been 'indefinitely suspended' because AIFF's commercial partners are not keen till an agreement replacing the one that ends this December is signed. Following a Supreme Court observation in April that no major decision be taken at AIFF till its verdict on the federation's constitution is given, discussions on the master rights agreement have been put on hold. 'The unfortunate development has placed Odisha FC in an extremely challenging position, arising from circumstances that are entirely beyond the Club's control… After careful and thorough consideration, and in alignment with the evolving situation, the Club has arrived at a difficult decision' to place contracts 'under suspension with effect from 5th August, 2025.' The letter signed by Ajit Panda of Delhi Soccer Private Limited, Odisha FC's parent company, says players and staff are free to pursue 'other professional opportunities that may be available to you.' The club is also willing to discuss mutual termination, the letter said. A post on Instagram from club owner Rohan Sharma said the club has not shut down. 'Key staff members are retained, and our women's team will be operational,' Sharma wrote on Instagram. 'However, it becomes harder to justify to my stakeholders to sink Crs upon Crs (crore upon crore) with nothing to show for it, and no end in sight.' On X, Sharma said the club hopes the issues will be resolved, 'maybe doing this will prompt people to fast-track solution' so that the club can resume normal service. Recently, Sharma also said the club did not know if they could host matches at Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Stadium because they have not heard from the state sports association. 'We are done with this government in Odisha. Poorly run compared to the previous admin,' he said on X. Odisha FC remain part of the group of eight ISL clubs who have written to AIFF seeking a meeting with Chaubey where they can, hopefully, contribute to trying to end this impasse. The clubs expect a meeting to come through next week, according to an official of one of the clubs. Not authorised to speak to the media, the official requested anonymity. Odisha FC finished seventh in ISL last term narrowly missing out on a play-off berth. Their women's team went from being IWL champions in 2023-24 to being relegated. Current India women's coach Crispin Chhetri, on whose watch India qualified for the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup, is also the Odisha women's team coach.

Siraj pushes his limit to lead India's fightback
Mumbai: Even in a lengthy series, you can single out moments of inspiration that can prove defining. Mohammed Siraj's unrelenting spell of eight overs before tea on Day 2 at The Oval could prove to be one. The onus is on India as a collective to back up his brilliance. (PTI) It was immediately after India had lost the Lord's Test narrowly that Siraj doffed his hat to Ben Stokes for bowling tireless marathon spells. 'If you can learn from someone, there's no shame,' he said. No shame, indeed. Just like his English pace counterpart, the Hyderabad fast bowler strained every sinew and kept running in to keep India in the Test after their batters had folded up for 224 in the first innings. His spell could well prove the spark for an Indian win to level the series 2-all. Fast bowlers have to bowl long spells from time to time. But think of the strain the present-day pacer has to endure in a five-Test series, stuffed in between a great deal of white-ball cricket. After Chris Woakes' freak injury ruled him from further participation at The Oval, Siraj is the only one among the pace pack from either side to play in all the Tests and still in action – 154 overs and counting. When Siraj came on to bowl mid-day, England openers had already played a powerful hand before lunch in 16 overs of mayhem, scoring at over run-a-ball. India's total had begun to look insufficient. While the sun showed up now and then, the pitch still had plenty of juice. India's pacers had to hit their lengths and stay patient. Siraj was among the bowlers who had gone for plenty with the new ball. He needed an early spark and the bowler created it on his own by getting one to nip back in sharply to Ollie Pope (22), trapping him lbw. Siraj stayed patient, not just with his lengths but lines too. He needed to be against Joe Root. There are days when Siraj likes to have a chirp with the batter. Not on Friday. He left it to Prasidh Krishna. All Siraj wanted was to channel his energies on breaking through Root's defence. He had done it before in the series targeting the stumps and on the final ball of the fifth over of his spell, summoned another one of his scrambled seam deliveries that rammed into Root's pads. The lbw decision was reviewed by Root, but DRS confirmed it. England were now four wickets down, but India still had plenty to do. They didn't have a fourth seamer to exploit the green pitch and Shubman Gill had no choice but to stick with Siraj. As if asking Siraj to invoke the spirit of Ishant Sharma's nine-over spell in the Perth Test of 2008, Gill kept throwing the ball to him for one more over. Siraj bowled his 6th, the 7th and then the 8th. While he worked hard, Siraj was able to pin the talented newcomer Jacob Bethell down with a toe crusher following up on a series of wobble seam balls. This time England wouldn't review. It was obvious that the ball would have dismantled Bethell's stumps. Each of Siraj's three wickets were arrowing in on the stumps and went into the scoresheet as leg before dismissals. After starting the day with a spell of 4-0-31-0, Siraj's second spell read 8-1-35-3. He may have bowled more productive spells before, but few where he was the last fast bowler standing in a punishing series played on batter-friendly decks, barring this one. The Oval Test has offered just rewards to the pacers, to try and overcome the pain barrier, bend their backs and make it count. Siraj did with his four-wicket haul, adding Harry Brook in the end. Siraj has taken on the mantle of leading the pace attack in Jasprit Bumrah's absence. Even in Australia where Bumrah was phenomenal, it was Siraj who bowled the most number of overs. Here, with an innings to come, he is already the series' highest wicket taker. So good has Siraj been with his skills and pluck that he would have won an admirer even from the opposing side in Stokes, the injured England skipper watching from the dressing room.

‘No formal talks on F-35 jets yet': India clarifies after Trump tariff announcement
The Indian government on Friday clarified that there have been no formal discussions yet on the potential sale of F-35 fighter jets to India, despite a reference in the India-US joint statement earlier this year. In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said: 'The US will undertake a review of its policy on releasing fifth-generation fighters (such as the F-35) and undersea systems to India. No formal discussions have been held as yet on this issue.' This statement comes in the backdrop of PM Narendra Modi's February visit to US, during which the two sides elevated defence and strategic cooperation, but without finalising key hardware acquisitions like the F-35. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was also asked whether any proposal had been made by the US regarding the F-35, and about the role of American diplomats in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Singh noted that diplomatic conversations were held with various countries, including the US, between April 22 and May 10. 'All our interlocutors were given a common message that India's approach was focused, measured and non-escalatory,' Singh said. He added that on May 9, India had conveyed its position clearly to US Vice President J D Vance. 'With specific reference to the United States, it was conveyed to Vice President J D Vance on May 9 that India would appropriately respond if Pakistan launched a major attack.' Singh clarified that the decision to cease military action was taken bilaterally between India and Pakistan. 'The discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two-armed forces, and it was initiated at Pakistan's request.' Responding to a question on third-party mediation, Singh reiterated New Delhi's long-standing policy: 'As regards any proposal for third-party mediation, our longstanding position remains that any outstanding issue with Pakistan will be discussed only bilaterally. This has been made clear to all nations, including by the Prime Minister to the US President.' He emphasised that the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is underpinned by mutual trust and respect for sovereignty: 'The India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill and robust engagement between our citizens. The partnership has also benefited from growing strategic convergence and cooperation.' Singh also reaffirmed that India remains committed to strategic autonomy despite deepening ties with Washington. 'The Government of India closely evaluates all its external partnerships, including those in the defence and strategic domains, through the prism of India's national interest and commitment to strategic autonomy.'
