
Databricks launches Lakebase Postgres database for AI era
Databricks has launched Lakebase, a fully managed Postgres database designed specifically for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and made it available in Public Preview.
Lakebase integrates an operational database layer into Databricks' Data Intelligence Platform, with the goal of enabling developers and enterprises to build data applications and AI agents more efficiently on a single multi-cloud environment.
Purpose-built for AI workloads
Operational databases, commonly known as Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) systems, are fundamental to application development across industries. The market for these databases is estimated at over USD $100 billion. However, many OLTP systems are based on architectures developed decades ago, which makes them challenging to manage, inflexible, and expensive. The current shift towards AI-driven applications has introduced new technical requirements, including the need for real-time data handling and scalable architecture that supports AI workloads at speed and scale.
Lakebase, which leverages Neon technology, delivers operational data to the lakehouse architecture — combining low-cost data storage with computing resources that automatically scale to meet workload requirements. This design allows for the convergence of operational and analytical systems, reducing latency for AI processes and offering enterprises current data for real-time decision-making. "We've spent the past few years helping enterprises build AI apps and agents that can reason on their proprietary data with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform," said Ali Ghodsi, Co-founder and CEO of Databricks. "Now, with Lakebase, we're creating a new category in the database market: a modern Postgres database, deeply integrated with the lakehouse and today's development stacks. As AI agents reshape how businesses operate, Fortune 500 companies are ready to replace outdated systems. With Lakebase, we're giving them a database built for the demands of the AI era."
Key features
Lakebase separates compute and storage, supporting independent scaling for diverse workloads. Its cloud-native architecture offers low latency (under 10 milliseconds), high concurrency (over 10,000 queries per second), and is designed for high-availability transactional operations. The service is built on Postgres, an open source database engine widely used by developers and supported by a rich ecosystem.
For AI workloads, Lakebase launches in under a second and operates on a consumption-based payment model, so users only pay for the resources they use. Branching capabilities allow developers to create copy-on-write database clones, supporting safe testing and experimentation by both humans and AI agents.
Lakebase automatically syncs data with lakehouse tables and provides an online feature store for machine learning model serving. It also integrates with other Databricks services, including Databricks Apps and Unity Catalog. The database is managed entirely by Databricks, with features such as encrypted data at rest, high availability, point-in-time recovery, and enterprise-grade compliance and security.
Market adoption and customer perspectives
According to the company, hundreds of enterprises participated in the Private Preview stage of Lakebase. Potential applications for the technology span sectors, from personalised product recommendations in retail to clinical trial workflow management in healthcare.
Jelle Van Etten, Head of Global Data Platform at Heineken, commented: "At Heineken, our goal is to become the best-connected brewer. To do that, we needed a way to unify all of our datasets to accelerate the path from data to value. Databricks has long been our foundation for analytics, creating insights such as product recommendations and supply chain enhancements. Our analytical data platform is now evolving to be an operational AI data platform and needs to deliver those insights to applications at low latency."
Anjan Kundavaram, Chief Product Officer at Fivetran, said: "Lakebase removes the operational burden of managing transactional databases. Our customers can focus on building applications instead of worrying about provisioning, tuning and scaling."
David Menninger, Executive Director at ISG Software Research, said: "Our research shows that the data and insights from analytical processes are the most critical data to enterprises' success. In order to act on that information, they must be able to incorporate it into operational processes via their business applications. These two worlds are no longer separate. By offering a Postgres-compatible, lakehouse-integrated system designed specifically for AI-native and analytical workloads, Databricks is giving customers a unified, developer-friendly stack that reduces complexity and accelerates innovation. This combination will help enterprises maximise the value they derive across their entire data estate — from storage to AI-enabled application deployment."
Integration and partner network
Lakebase is launching with support from a network of partners, including technology vendors and system integrators such as Accenture, Deloitte, Cloudflare, Informatica, Qlik, and Redis, among others. These partnerships are designed to ease data integration, enhance business intelligence, and support governance for customers as they adopt Lakebase as part of their operational infrastructure.
Lakebase is now available in Public Preview with further enhancements planned in the coming months. Customers can access the preview directly through their Databricks workspace.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) agents into business and cybersecurity operations is rapidly shifting from experimental trials to real-world deployment, as organisations across sectors seek to harness the power of automation, efficiency, and data-driven decision-making. In the realm of cybersecurity, the accelerating sophistication of threats driven by AI is a growing concern. Fabio Fratucello, Field Chief Technology Officer World Wide for CrowdStrike, highlights that malicious actors are increasingly using AI, including large language models (LLMs), to launch more convincing phishing scams, business email compromise, and social engineering attacks. "AI is lowering the barrier to entry for adversaries, allowing them to automate social engineering, misinformation campaigns, and credential harvesting at unprecedented speed and scale," Fratucello notes, citing findings from CrowdStrike's 2025 Global Threat Report. This surge in AI-powered attacks is amplifying the pressure on security teams, already hampered by overwhelming alert volumes and a shortage of skilled analysts. According to Fratucello, the key to regaining the upper hand lies in deploying AI-enabled tools that automate detection and triage of threats. CrowdStrike's Charlotte AI, for instance, uses machine learning to validate and prioritise security alerts with more than 98% accuracy. By automating repetitive tasks, Charlotte AI reportedly saves security teams up to 40 hours per week, enabling them to concentrate on proactively hunting advanced threats and halting breaches before escalation. Importantly, Charlotte AI operates within a "bounded autonomy framework," allowing organisations to set specific parameters for automated decision-making. Analysts retain control by defining thresholds and determining when human review is required, ensuring that the balance between automation and human oversight is maintained. Fratucello stresses, "This combination of machine speed and human-defined guardrails returns the AI advantage to defenders and ensures organisations can operate at the speed of threats." Elsewhere in the enterprise technology space, companies are contending with the challenge of bringing AI agents out of the prototype lab and into large-scale, reliable production. Nick Eayrs, Vice President, Field Engineering, APJ, at Databricks, observes that while enthusiasm for AI agents is high, moving beyond proof-of-concept still eludes many organisations. "The challenge is not just building them – it is making them scalable, efficient and reliable enough to stand up in the real world," Eayrs explains. Too often, businesses rely on trial-and-error approaches and are forced into trade-offs between operating costs and performance, which undermines the requirements of enterprise-grade use cases. In response, Databricks has launched Agent Bricks, a system designed to streamline AI agent creation using real enterprise data. Agent Bricks deploys automated evaluation benches, generates synthetic data, and leverages custom judges to test agent quality and efficiency. This reduces the manual, repetitive work typically involved in agent development, freeing AI engineers to focus on higher-value tasks. Eayrs says that common industry uses of such AI agents already include structured information extraction, knowledge assistance, customised data transformation, and multi-agent orchestration. "Ultimately, it is about building production-grade AI agents that are useful, reliable and ready for deployment — that is what we are focused on," he adds. The potential benefits of AI agents are also being demonstrated at the customer coalface. At the property services company hipages Group, AI agents have transformed backend operations. Jeremy Burton, Chief Technology Officer, reports that the introduction of Agentforce has reduced lead response time by 60% and automated verification processes, dramatically speeding up license and registration checks for tradespeople. "Agentforce and Data Cloud are now a core part of our ecosystem, helping us connect better with our customers and tradies," he states. By bringing disparate data and customer touchpoints onto a unified platform, hipages has streamlined work for staff and improved satisfaction levels for both customers and end users. Hospitality firm Urban Rest has leveraged Agentforce to scale up its service operations in step with rapid growth. Jeff Baars, Chief Commercial Officer, explains that Agentforce's centralised knowledge base provides round-the-clock self-serve support for guests, enabling the business to operate without on-site staff across 800 properties in four countries. This has increased productivity by 50% for the operations team, while anticipated field service visits have dropped by up to 40%. Baars notes, "Agentforce empowers our guests with instant, self-serve access to everything they need to know about their apartment, freeing up our guest relations team to focus on support that requires a human touch." At Kudosity, an AI agent named 'Emily' now handles up to 40% of general customer support queries, ensuring prompt responses and reducing the workload for support staff. When a query is too complex, Emily refers it to a human agent, preserving personalised service where it matters most. The evolving landscape of AI agents in the real world demonstrates the transformative potential of the technology, balanced by the need for systematic deployment, human oversight, and ongoing adaptation to rapid changes in both business and cybersecurity domains. As enterprise adoption accelerates, the focus is squarely on building reliable, scalable, and human-aligned AI agents that deliver tangible benefits across sectors.

The Ceasefire Bolstered Confidence, And Commodity Currencies
The ceasefire between Israel and Iran captivated market attention last week. Risk appetite returned, and oil prices are back trading at levels seen prior to the conflict. We may have avoided a spike in petrol prices, but Kiwi households are still having to contend with a lift in food inflation. The cost-of-living crisis was meant to end. But inflation is rearing its ugly head once again. Talking currencies, our COTW looks at the highly unusual soft USD, in such an uncertain world. It has many talking about a new world order, and the end of the USD as a reserve currency. But we argue that we have NOT seen a material move out of USDs. Here's our take on current events Holding… holding… held. That pretty much sums up how we (and markets) were looking at headlines last week as news broke around a ceasefire between Israel and Iran – a truce 'orchestrated' by none other than President Trump himself. Despite a bit of a rocky start, the ceasefire continues to hold. The news bolstered risk sentiment, with equities rallying. Meanwhile, oil prices quickly unwound their recent spike and have returned to levels before the conflict broke out. To be honest, market movements during this period of escalated conflict had been more subdued than what you may usually expect in times of war, and potential disruption to oil supply. Maybe it was the more targeted and localised nature of the conflict. Or maybe the broader macroeconomic fundamentals of weaker global growth (thanks to tariffs) tempering oil demand. It's most likely a bit of both. But we also think markets may be becoming a bit desensitised to the constant stream of risk events that define today's environment. Meanwhile, movements across currencies continue to surprise us too. If we had spent the last 3 months deep in the Himalayan mountains, protecting endangered tigers, we would come out oblivious to market moves. If we were given the headlines only… we would have said the NZD should be in the low 50s (not 60s). Why? Well, a global trade war of such magnitude should hammer a (Kiwi) commodity currency. But it hasn't. A soft USD, highly unusual in such an uncertain world, has many talking about a new world order, and the end of the USD as a reserve currency (See our COTW for more). We're facing into many headwinds. But we're steadfast in our forecast for the Kiwi. We're sticking with our call for 60c by year end. Yes, given our brave calls of the past and because the Kiwi is basically oscillating around 60c today, it sounds boring. But boring it is not. We expect to see a typically wide trading range around 60c. If downside risks dominate, we could see the Kiwi dip back below 57c. A move less likely with USD weakness. And then there are the upside risks… low in likelihood, but could see the Kiwi pop into the 62-63c range. So, there's something for importers and exporters… and both will get their chance to play. Our forecast for 2026 sees a move in the Kiwi up towards 63c, as the global economy recovers (we hope) with further rate cuts delivered. That's our central scenario. Upside risks could see 65-67c (our 2027 forecast brought into 2026). But many are suggesting we're entering a very different world. And it's the beginning of the USD's end. That's hard to trade. Here at home, we may have avoided a spike in petrol prices like we saw in the fallout of the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war. But households are still having to contend with a recent pick up in food inflation as well as climbing energy bills, council rates and insurance premiums. In an op-ed in The Post, our Chief Economist Jarrod Kerr, penned his thoughts on inflation and the cost-of-living crisis. 'The cost-of-living crisis has ravaged discretionary spending. It has been a volatile, and gruelling few (too many) years. And lower income households have been hit the hardest. Sharp spikes in inflation act like a tax. Households are forced to spend more on essentials, and must then cut back on discretionary spending elsewhere. That hurts.' Charts of the Week: It's a diversification. Not a dumping of dollars. In this new world, searching for safer safe havens, we have seen a rebellious weakening in the USD. But the moves lack conviction. The USD DXY has traded as low as 97.90(ish), taking out the lows of 2023 and '24. Is that worrying? Not really. We were much lower over 2020-21, even lower in 2018, and much lower between 2005 and 2014 (averaging close to 80 in the DXY with lows as deep as 70). So, 97 isn't low. We are not seeing a dumping of dollars. What we are seeing is a mild diversification out of dollars and into assets like gold, currencies like the Euro, and more speculative assets that have the potential to disrupt, namely cryptocurrencies. And it must be said: Trump wants a weaker dollar. MACA: Make America Cheap Again. The dollar is still the global reserve. If it was the end of USD dominance, we would see a much more meaningful flight out of US Treasuries. The bond market vigilantes have made much noise, but little movement. The US 10-year yield is stable around 4.4%, a level consistent with the economic environment plus a little term premium. The yield would have to be 100bps higher, around 5.4%, to get us worried, and convinced in de-dollarisation. And such a move out of dollars would see a far more aggressive flight into gold. US$3,365 per ounce sounds high, and it is historically. But if you truly want out of fiat currencies, it should be higher. Although Bitcoin has had a fair run, cryptos would also get more (consistent) interest without USDs. The lack of conviction in the flight to safety trade may also reflect the fact that markets simply care less. Despite (depressing) headlines and daunting dealing room discussions ('are we on the brink of WWIII?'), financial markets are quizzically calm. There was more panic in the fallout of President Trump's Liberation Day back in April. The VIX – 'fear index – shot up above 50 for only the fourth time in history. In today's abnormal times, its back running at 'normal' levels. Getting out of US dollars is harder than you think. The Euro has been an obvious (next largest, next best) option. But we must remind readers that it was only 12-14 years ago when we had the European debt crisis… remember Grexit? Serious strategists at the time were predicting the end of the EU altogether… a view many still think is inevitable without fiscal union. So, the EU has problems. Clearly the Swiss francs and Japanese yen hold dear to the hearts of panicked investors. But they too have issues around the strength of their currencies at times… remember the Swiss dropping its peg in 2015? Now that's volatility. Yes, Francs always make sense, but to a point. So where else do you go? The British pound is an option… but they received a double notch downgrade in 2016 after Brexit. BRICS? Sure… but they've fallen around 30% in the last five years. And we only like the 'I' and 'C' in BRICS. So do you explore Asia? Yes, but slowly. We think the Chinese Yuan and Indian Rupee will have a much larger role to play in global finance… eventually. But they want weaker currencies. It's hard when every country wants a weaker currency to help their exports. We can't all fall together. Because currency is a relative price… one goes down, the other up… and you need to find another safe home.
