Mohammed Ali Bemammer set standard for NorthEast United FC's new era

India Gazette11-07-2025
New Delhi [India], July 11 (ANI): NorthEast United FC have seen players come and go. The club has rarely enjoyed a lot of stability when it comes to the coaching staff or the squad. So, seeing a player depart should be par for course. In the case of Mohammed Ali Bemammer, it isn't.
The Moroccan midfielder was more than just a name in the Highlanders' roster. He embodied the values that the new-look NorthEast United FC team under Juan Pedro Benali represented - excellence, hard work and fighting spirit. Bemammer had everything in abundant supply and was a source of inspiration for the team, as per the ISL official statement.
While life goes on at football clubs when a player departs, Bemammer's departure is certain to leave a void in the NorthEast United FC's dressing room simply because he was so good at so many things that were central to Benali's football.
A shield in front of the defence, Bemammer was as good as anybody in protecting the back four. While his defensive action numbers were impressive as he topped the Highlanders' tackling charts in 2023-24 with 33 successful tackles, his reading of the game and positional sense were exceptional, allowing him to be at the right place at the right time to halt the opponent's charge. This ability provided great balance to the team, allowing the more creative players up front more freedom to express themselves.
The Moroccan's involvement wasn't just limited to shielding the back line. He was the key link between attack and defence. Bemammer topped NorthEast United FC's passing charts in both seasons he featured for the club, meaning he was central to progressing the ball upfield. And he wasn't a mere enabler; he was also the orchestrator at times.
Bemammer created 23 chances in the 2024-25 season, the fifth most in the Highlanders' set up, as per the ISL official website.
He also added goals to his game in his second season, scoring thrice in the ISL, which included some real screamers, making him a complete midfielder.
NorthEast United FC may replace his skillsets with the ball with one or even two players if needed, but it will be hard for the Highlanders to find a substitute for the character he was.
A real physical and motivational presence in the heart of the team, Bemammer guided those around him and ensured they got their best out of them. He was key in making sure Benali's plans were translated into performances on the pitch.
He wasn't always shouting at his player, but letting his game do the talking. Bemammer led by example, putting every ounce of precision in every pass, putting his heart into every tackle and using every fibre in his brain to make his clever runs, setting a benchmark for the rest to follow.
From joining a bottom-placed team that scored 20 goals and conceded 55 in return the Highlanders turned into a team that scored 46 and conceded just 29 in reply in 2024-25 in the league stage. Bemammer was the heartbeat of this transformation, the press release added.
Even as he leaves, leaving NorthEast United FC with big boots to fill, he leaves behind a blueprint, a manual of what it takes to be a NorthEast United FC player in this new era of reformation. And those who are still there and those who will join in the future can find a reference in Bemammer's work in the ISL when they try to uphold the standards of this improving NorthEast United FC side.
When the situation is bleak, you need to make your own role models, and with Bemammer, NorthEast United FC did just that. (ANI)

Durand Cup 2025: NorthEast United Begin Title Defence With Ajaraie Hat-Trick

Last Updated: NorthEast United FC started their 134th Durand Cup with a 3-1 win over Malaysian Armed Forces. Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie scored a hat-trick. Defending champions NorthEast United FC began their 134th Durand Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, securing a convincing 3-1 win over Malaysian Armed Forces FT (ATM FA) in their Group E opener at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, the top scorer from last season's ISL, starred for the Highlanders with a stunning hat-trick (23', 29', 70') to kick off the title defence in style. Mohammad Amir's 88th-minute strike was a mere consolation for the visitors. How NorthEast United FC Beat Malaysian Armed Forces? NEUFC head coach Juan Pedro Benali opted for his familiar 4-3-3 formation, with skipper Miguel Zabaco anchoring the defence and Dipesh Chauhan in goal. Up front, the trio of Ajaraie, Jithin M.S., and Parthib Gogoi spearheaded the attack. ATM FA, under coach Mohamad Khairil Hafiz Mohd. Zanggi made five changes from their previous outing against Shillong Lajong FC, with Hairi, Nasir Yasa, and Ibrahim Muhamat forming the attacking line, and Mohamad Faizal Hussin starting in goal. The match began with both teams pressing hard and battling for possession in midfield. However, the breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when debutant Andres Rodriguez delivered a sublime through ball for Ajaraie, who coolly slotted it past the keeper with his left foot, sending it into the right corner. It was a composed finish from the Moroccan, who wasted no time in opening his account for the 2025-26 season. Just six minutes later, the Moroccan doubled the lead after a sublime team move. Initiated by Ajaraie himself, the forward played it wide to Jithin, who dazzled the defence with close control inside the box before unselfishly squaring it back. Ajaraie made no mistake from close range, smashing it into the roof of the net Lalbiakdika had an opportunity to make it 3-0 in the 39th minute but failed to keep his volley down. Moments later, Jithin floated in a cross for Ajaraie, but the Malaysian keeper was quick off his line to cut out the danger. The best chance for the visitors came just before halftime, when Ibrahim Muhamat's curling effort from the edge of the box was palmed away by Dipesh Chauhan. The second half began on an even footing, with both sides probing but unable to create any clear-cut chances early on. In the 59th minute, a shot from Muhammad Amir Faizal was blocked by Highlanders' defender Lalbiakdika, who had come on at halftime to replace Zabaco. A minute later, Nunez let fly a shot from outside the box, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by the Malaysian goalkeeper. The Malaysian Armed Forces began to show more attacking intent through Faizal and Muhammad Hamid, coming close on two occasions in the final ten minutes. However, they failed to capitalise, with poor finishing letting them down. Despite the Malaysian Armed Forces enjoying a momentary better spell, it was Ajaraie again who delivered the knockout blow. In the 70th minute, Bekey Oram delivered a lofted diagonal from the right half-space that found Ajaraie on the left. The Moroccan danced past defenders before curling a majestic left-footed shot into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick and seal the game. Spanish forward Jairo Samperio nearly added a fourth with a thunderous strike from distance that rattled the crossbar in the 81st minute and gasp from 7500 plus in attendance, including NorthEast United owner and bollywood star John Abraham. The Malaysian Armed Forces finally pulled one back in the 88th minute, with Muhammad Amir Faisal converting from close range, but it proved no more than a late consolation. With a confident 3-1-win, NorthEast United FC made a commanding statement to their Durand Cup title defence. The Malaysian Armed Forces FT, though outplayed in the first half, showed flashes of resilience and attacking promise in the second and will look to regroup ahead of their last fixture. Defending champion Northeast United FC rode on its Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie's hat-trick to beat Malaysian Armed Forces 3-1 in a Group-E match and begin its campaign in style in the Durand Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday. Ajaraie first capitalised on a through ball after receiving it on top of the box. Then he finished off a well-coordinated move to put NUFC 2-0 up at the break.
