Celtic flop 'expected' to leave EPL club as ex-winger is released

The central defender joined the Parkhead outfit in the summer of 2023 on an initial six-month loan.
Phillips' tenure in Glasgow's east end ultimately didn't go to plan, as he played just eight times in all competitions.

The 28-year-old promptly returned to Anfield, although he is now expected to leave Liverpool this summer, claims The Athletic.
Phillips spent last season on loan at Derby County in the English Championship, although it remains to be seen where he may end up come the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign.
News of his potential exit comes shortly after ex-Celtic winger Gary Mackay-Steven was released by Kilmarnock.
The Rugby Park club recently provided a squad update following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
Mackay-Steven was named as one of 15 players whose contracts are expiring and are set to depart.
The wide man played 62 times in the green and white of Celtic in a two-and-a-half-year spell at the club after joining, alongside Stuart Armstrong, from Dundee United in 2015.
Elsewhere, Rennes are said to have held positive talks with Brentford over the sale of Kyogo Furuhashi.
It was reported earlier this month that Kyogo is 'expected' to leave the French club, with Bournemouth interested in finding out the terms of a potential transfer.
Now, a new team from England's top flight has emerged in the race in the form of Brentford. Indeed, reports from Le Parisien [via RecordSport] claim that Rennes have held 'positive' talks with the London club regarding a potential deal.
Thomas Frank's side finished 10th in the Premier League last season.

The 27-year-old winger's Old Trafford future was deemed practically over when the club handed his No10 shirt to new signing Matheus Cunha. And the England star has finally secured his dream move to Barcelona, who now have an option to BUY the Red Devils academy graduate come the end of next season for a reported £26million. The move will be Rashford's second consecutive loan spell after a six-month stint with Aston Villa in the second half of last season. Barcelona are understood to be paying 100 per cent of Rashford's whopping £325,000-a-week wages - which he's unlikely to get should he permanently move to the Nou Camp in 2026. READ MORE ON MAN UTD ROLL WITH IT Rashford endures journey from hell as Barcelona move almost scuppered by OASIS Taking Rashford on an initial temporary basis helps Barca as they continue to navigate a difficult financial situation, with the player also eager to secure a place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup. The deal does not allow United to recall the forward and a permanent switch will see Rashford end his 20-year association with United. The Red Devils will save £15MILLION in wages over the next year, which could provide Amorim with vital funds to overhaul his squad. Rashford has not featured for United since the Europa League clash against Viktoria Plzen on December 12, having first been left out of the squad for the Premier League win over Manchester City on December 15. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS United have never publicly closed the door to Rashford being reintegrated, although it's believed he can never play under Amorim again. The local lad joined United at the age of seven and has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances since his breakthrough debut in 2015. Marcus Rashford gives the thumbs up as he arrives to seal loan move to Barcelona 6 Joining Barcelona has been Rashford's No1 option since he declared in December that he was ready for a new challenge after being iced out by Amorim. He will be the first England international to wear Barcelona colours since Gary Lineker, who played there between for three years between 1986 and 1989. Rashford will also wear the historic No14 shirt at the Camp Nou outfit, previously worn by legends such as Johan Cruyff and Thierry Henry. Current Bristol City midfielder Marcus McGuane joined Barca's B Team in 2018, making one first-team friendly appearance after coming off from the bench with 13 minutes remaining in 2018. Asked by a Spanish influencer if he would like to play alongside Lamine Yamal a few months back, Rashford said: "Yes, for sure. Everyone wants to play with the best. Hopefully... we'll see." SunSport exclusively revealed that he arrived in sunny Spain on Sunday night after a nightmare private plane journey was derailed by none other than Manchester City supporting rock band Oasis. The forward completed a medical with the LaLiga champions on Monday, with the aim of being able to join their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea on Thursday. A debut could even come as soon as Sunday morning against Vissel Kobe. It is thought Liverpool forward Luis Diaz was a priority target for Barca, but the Catalans' advances were rejected earlier in the window. I find the whole episode very soul-destroying Sheringham 6 Hansi Flick's side also agreed personal terms with Nico Williams before the Spain international opted instead to stay at Athletic Club and sign a new contract until 2035. Rashford will still have two years left on his United deal when this proposed loan move ends. Villa turned down their £40m option to buy. But his career at Old Trafford has appeared to be over since Amorim claimed he would rather put his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach on the bench than the forward because of what he considers a lack of effort. He enjoyed his short-term loan at Villa, scoring four goals in 17 appearances for Unai Emery's side and often pipping United target Ollie Watkins to the starting line-up. It saw him get recalled to the England squad for Thomas Tuchel's first two games, but he missed out on a second call-up after his season was curtailed by a hamstring injury picked up in April. But after a summer of intense training in Marbella, Rashford - who has been training alone at Carrington away from the first-team squad - has now fully recovered and is ready for action. But ex-United star Teddy Sheringham weighed in on the "soul-destroying" Rashford debate before his second loan deal was confirmed. Sheringham told Sky Bet: "I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club. "From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step that he hasn't deserved." With one of the five "Bomb Squad" players sorted, Amorim is still trying to shift Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia. 6 Rashford is in top shape after training throughout the summer

Ex-Rangers star seals lucrative move to big-spending outfit just days after controversial release from historic EFL club

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FORMER Rangers star has become the latest recruit to Wrexham's assault on the Championship. The ambitious Welsh side, backed by Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney, sealed promotion from League One to the second tier last season. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 An ex-Rangers star has won a big move to Wrexham this summer Credit: Keith Campbell - The Sun Glasgow So far this summer they've forked out just over £2million to sign defender Liberato Cacece from Empoli and a further £1.2m to bring veteran midfielder George Thomason from Bolton Wanderers, while Wales international Danny Ward came in on a free. Ex-Rangers starlet Ryan Hardie was signed for £700,000 last month and he'll now be joined by another former Gers ace at the Racecourse Ground. That man is Josh Windass, who only days ago was released by Sheffield Wednesday following a controversial stand-off with the historic EFL club. The 31-year-old demanded to have his contract ripped up following Wednesday's descent into financial meltdown under owner Dejphon Chansiri. It was reported he could be lined up for a shock return to Rangers but the Owls' new Championship rivals have swooped in first. He has signed a three-year deal, having spent the last five years of his career at Hillsborough. A statement from the Welsh club read: "Wrexham AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Josh Windass on a free transfer following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday, pending registration and international clearance. "The attacking midfielder joins the Club on a three-year deal until the end of the 2027/28 season. "Windass, 31, made 153 appearances for the Owls in total, scoring 53 goals and winning promotion to the EFL Championship in the 2022/23 season. "The creative midfielder played an integral role during that campaign, scoring the winning goal in the play-off final and being named in the EFL League One Team of the Season. Rangers fans unfurl giant tifo ahead of Russell Martin's first match "He also counts Accrington Stanley, Rangers and Wigan Athletic among his former professional teams." Windass said: "I'm looking forward to getting going. I've spoken to the manager, who has showed me his plans for the season and what he expects from the group, and I've really bought into that. "I'd describe myself as honest and hard-working, I like to contribute goals and assists from midfield and that's what I'm looking to bring to Wrexham. "First and foremost, I want to get into the team and earn the respect of my team-mates – I want to be professional, be someone to look up to and then get the team as high up the league as possible." Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: "I'm delighted to welcome Josh to the Club. He's a player with a lot of Championship experience and I'm looking forward to working with him over the coming seasons." 2 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
