US Job Growth Weaker Than Expected In July As Unemployment Rises
US job growth missed expectations in July, government data showed Friday, while revisions to hiring figures in recent months brought them to the weakest levels since the Covid-19 pandemic. The employment numbers point to risks in the key labor market as companies grapple with President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs -- putting pressure on the central bank as it mulls the best time to cut interest rates. The world's biggest economy added 73,000 jobs last month, while hiring numbers were revised significantly lower for May and June, the Labor Department said. The jobless rate nudged up from 4.1 percent to 4.2 percent. Experts have warned that private sector firms appear to be in a wait-and-see mode due to heightened uncertainty over Trump's rapidly changing trade policy. With tariff levels climbing since the start of the year, both on imports from various countries and on sector-specific products such as steel, aluminum and autos, many firms have faced higher business costs. Some are now passing them along partially to consumers. On Friday, the Department of Labor said hiring numbers for May were revised down from 144,000 to 19,000. The figure for June was shifted from 147,000 to 14,000. This was notably lower than job creation levels in recent years. During the pandemic, the economy lost jobs. Average hourly learnings rose by 0.3 percent to $36.44 in July, the Labor Department said. It added that employment continued rising in health care and in social assistance, while the federal government continued shedding jobs. "This is a gamechanger jobs report. The labor market is deteriorating quickly," said Heather Long, chief economist at the Navy Federal Credit Union. She added in a note that of the growth in July, "75 percent of those jobs were in one sector: healthcare." The US economy has added an average of just 35,000 jobs per month since May, data showed. "This is not a healthy job market. The economy needs certainty soon on tariffs," Long said. "The longer this tariff whiplash lasts, the more likely this weak hiring environment turns into layoffs," she added. A sharp weakening in the labor market could push the Federal Reserve towards slashing interest rates sooner to shore up the economy. On Friday, the two Fed officials who voted this week against the central bank's decision to keep rates unchanged for a fifth meeting warned against a "wait and see" approach. Putting off an interest rate cut "could result in a deterioration in the labor market and a further slowing in economic growth," Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said in a statement.

In Numbers: How the populations of European countries have changed
The EU population grew by almost 1.1 million in 2024, reaching an estimated 450.4 million residents on January 1st 2025, according to data published by the European statistical office Eurostat. The year 2024 was the fourth consecutive year of population growth in the EU, after a drop recorded during the pandemic. The increase is largely due to net migration (the difference between the number of people arriving and those leaving) rather than natural change (the difference between births and deaths). Only six EU countries – France and Sweden, together with Ireland, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta – recorded more births than deaths, in addition to positive net migration. Effects of migration Historically, the difference between births and deaths in the EU was positive – yet slowing – until 2011. Since 2012, more deaths than births were recorded but the total EU population has kept increasing due to positive net migration. Only during the Covid-19 pandemic was the negative natural change not compensated by migration, Eurostat says. In 2024, deaths (4.82 million) outnumbered births (3.56 million), resulting in a negative natural change of 1.3 million people. On the other hand, positive net migration was 2.3 million, lower than the almost 3 million of 2022. These factors together made up for a population increase of 1,070,702. On a country level, 19 EU member states saw their population growing while eight saw a decline. The highest growth rates compared to the total population were recorded in Malta (the smallest EU country by population, at 0.6 million), Portugal and Ireland. Denmark was the only EU country with zero natural change and its population was stable at around 5.9 million. Advertisement Except for Latvia, where people emigrating keep outnumbering those immigrating, all EU countries had positive net migration in 2024. In 13 EU countries (Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland), this was the reason for population growth. Largest countries Germany, France and Italy are the largest EU countries by population (19 percent, 15 percent and 13 percent respectively, and comprise almost half of all EU residents. In 2024, Germany had 83.5 million inhabitants compared to 83.4 in 2023, France 68.6 million compared to 68.4 the previous year, and Italy 59.7 million people, a slight decrease over 2023. Spain follows with 49 million people, compared to 48.6 in 2023. In Sweden, the total population reached 10.5 million, and Austria 9.1 million, both representing a slight increase compared to 2023. Norway followed a similar trend, at 5.5 million, and Switzerland's population reached 9 million people, compared to 8.9 in 2023. Advertisement Countries losing population In 2024, the population declined in eight EU countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), as the negative natural change was not offset by immigration. The largest declines were recorded in Latvia, Hungary, Poland and Estonia. Latvia was the only country with both negative natural change and negative net migration. Future trend The EU population grew by about 0.9 million each year between 2005 and 2024, compared to 3 million per year during the 1960s. In 1960, the population of the current EU countries was 354.5 million. In the future, due to the ageing population, the number of deaths is expected to further increase, and if fertility rates remain at current levels, the negative natural change could continue . This is in line with a global trend with a growing number of older adults and fewer under 25, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Centre . This also shows that Europe's median age is 43, making it the oldest region in the world.

How Might Trump's Tariffs Hurt Brazil?
With Donald Trump's punitive tariffs against Brazil poised to take effect within days, Latin America's largest economy is bracing for a virtual embargo on its planes, grains, and crude oil. The mercurial US president has penciled in 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian goods starting August 1, swatting aside centuries-old ties and a US trade surplus which Brasilia put at $284 million in 2024. Trump has not attempted to hide the political motivation behind the sanctions -- citing a judical "witch hunt" against his right-wing ally, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. The former artillery officer is on trial, accused of plotting a coup after losing re-election in 2022 to now-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. While Brazil's seasoned trade diplomats rush to avoid a damaging trade war that would hurt the country's already slow-growing economy, key sectors are bracing for impact. Brazil is the world's largest exporter of beef, chicken, soybeans, corn, coffee, sugar and orange juice. Its main exports to the United States are crude oil, semi-finished iron and steel products, coffee and aircraft. The agriculture sector alone is projecting losses of $5.8 billion, according to the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock. Other sectors, such as aeronautics, fisheries and defense, allocate more than half of their exports to the US market and may suffer "an impact on jobs," according to economist Felipe Salto, former secretary of finance of Sao Paulo state. In the aeronautics sector, the tariff hike is "almost an embargo" and may lead to a "workforce adjustment similar to the Covid-19 pandemic," according to Francisco Gomes Neto, CEO of Brazil's Embraer, the world's third-largest aircraft manufacturer. Trump has become notorious for changing his mind on tariff rates, for stalling deadlines, and for claiming epic deals that fail to materialize. He may yet change his mind again. But in Brazil, the impact of his threats is already being felt. There is a preventive suspension of shipments of meat, fruit, fish, and grains, according to industry sources. About 77,000 tons of fruit are sitting in containers awaiting a diplomatic resolution before they spoil, according to the Brazilian Association of Fruit Export Producers. New shipments of beef to the United States are "under analysis" as they would only arrive after August 1, the powerful Brazilian Beef Association said. The political nature of the spat seems to make a last-minute deal less likely. Brazil has insisted the case against Bolsonaro will go ahead unless prosecutors decide otherwise. Trump "doesn't want to talk," leftist Lula lamented recently, reiterating that his Plan A is to continue "negotiating." Lula has tasked Vice President Geraldo Alckmin with reaching out to the White House. But a Brazilian negotiating proposal sent in May has received no response, according to Brasilia. Ricardo Alban, president of the National Confederation of Industry, believes Brazil will continue trying to negotiate as long as possible. Its "largest bilateral trade relationship in manufactured products is with the United States," he said. As a Plan B, Lula's government is already considering offering credit lines for tariff-hit companies. In the longer term, Brazil is trying to "restructure" its trade ties with countries beyond the United States, top government official Rui Costa said recently. The European Union, Mexico, and Canada are all potential partners. When it comes to increasing exports to China, economists see a more difficult path for some sectors. "It's easier to redirect oil or coffee production to other countries than aircraft parts," said Marcos Mendes of the Insper research center. "Highly specialized sectors will suffer more," he explained. Lula promised to apply "reciprocity" if Trump's tariff threat materializes, measures that could deepen the economic impact on both economies.
