Ludhiana West bypoll: AAP seeks to retain seat as Cong, SAD ready for fight; BJP to name candidate

The counting will be held on June 23 simultaneously with four other Assembly seats -- two in Gujarat and one each in Kerala and West Bengal.
The state Aam Aadmi Party in February announced Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora as its candidate for the Ludhiana (West) Assembly byelection, while the main Opposition Congress has fielded former Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who is being accused in a multi-crore foodgrain transportation and labour cartage tender scam. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has nominated Parupkar Singh Ghuman for the bypoll. The BJP is yet to name its candidate.
By fielding the sitting MP, speculations in political circles are rife that AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, who's active in the state politics after facing humiliating defeat not only of his party but his bastion in Delhi Assembly elections, is going to the Rajya Sabha in his place in case Arora wins the bypoll.
However, the party has so far denied that Kejriwal is moving to the Rajya Sabha.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2024 carried out a raid at the residence of AAP candidate Arora in Ludhiana as part of a money laundering probe linked to a land 'fraud' case. The raid was in connection with a chunk of land that was allotted to Ritesh Properties and Industries Limited, one of the companies owned by Arora, by the state government for an industrial project, but it was used for a residential project.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, AAP's legislator Gogi, who joined the party in the run-up to the polls, defeated two-time legislator Bharat Bhushan Ashu in Ludhiana (West), a traditional Congress stronghold urban seat.
The BJP, which is expanding its footprints in the state's Hindu-dominated urban constituencies, is eyeing to field a strong and credible local face with grassroots connect to give a tough contest both to the state ruling AAP and the Congress.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has already launched a scathing attack on the three-year rule of AAP's governance in Punjab, accusing it of transforming the state into a 'rehabilitation centre' for Kejriwal's rejected Delhi loyalists.
The BJP leaders like Tarun Chugh and Manjinder Singh Sirsa claim that AAP is systematically placing its favoured individuals in key administrative positions, effectively undermining Punjab's autonomy. They argue that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been reduced to a 'rubber stamp' while Kejriwal operates as a remote puppet master.
The allegations suggest a broader critique of AAP's political strategy of transplanting its Delhi network into Punjab's political ecosystem.
Reacting to the appointment of three Delhi-based lawyers -- Mohammad Irshad, Prashant Manchanda, and R.V. Sinha -- as Additional Advocate Generals in Punjab, Chugh last week questioned whether Punjab lacked its own legal talent or whether it had now become a 'shelter home' for Kejriwal's 'blue-eyed boys'.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of a discussion in Parliament on Operation Sindoor, the Congress on Sunday recapitulated the events forming the backdrop to the debate, prominent among them US President Donald claiming "26 times" since May 10 that he stopped Operation Sindoor by threatening to cut off trade with India. The opposition party said the debate was a long time coming, but "better late than never." "The Lok Sabha is scheduled to begin a 16-hour debate on Pahalgam-Op Sindoor tomorrow and the Rajya Sabha is set to do so the day after tomorrow. The INC had been demanding a special two-day session of Parliament immediately after Operation Sindoor was abruptly halted. That demand was ignored. Nevertheless, better late than never," party leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. The Pahalgam terror attack took place on April 22, but the terrorists directly responsible have still not been brought to justice, the party's general secretary, in-charge, communications, said. And just the day before yesterday the US Secretary lauded Pakistan in his meeting with its Deputy PM," Ramesh said. He said the outlandish claims made by sections of the Indian media during Operation Sindoor, "with instigation by the PM's media managers," led to a mockery of whatever serious narrative was sought to be built up. The narrative had more takers at home than in countries where an outreach took place, Ramesh said. Opposition parties have agreed to a special discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor on Monday in Lok Sabha and the next day in Rajya Sabha. The debate is hoped to bring normalcy to Parliament after a virtual washout of the first week's proceedings.

BJP urges K'taka govt to act against firms selling fake seeds, fertilisers
Accusing the ruling Congress of 'failing' Karnataka, state BJP President B Y Vijayendra on Sunday urged the Siddaramaiah-led government to file a criminal case and take strict action against companies that are supplying fake seeds and fertilisers to farmers. He said a police vigilance team should be formed to take strict action against the networks that cheat farmers. The BJP chief was responding to reports about fake seeds and fertilisers being supplied to farmers in some parts of the state. "The efforts to trouble the food-providing farmers and exploit them within the system have been ongoing for a long time. Companies supplying fertilizers and seeds are engaging in the despicable act of sabotaging agricultural activities by providing fake seeds to the enthusiastic farming community that are expecting a good harvest in the backdrop of a promising monsoon this time," Vijayendra said. "I urge the government to file a criminal case against such companies in this regard and take strict action, and also to take all necessary measures to ensure that the farming community gets quality seeds and necessary fertilizers in a timely manner," he said in a post on 'X'. Stating that it should be the government's top priority to ensure that the farming community, which is the largest human resource of the country and who live by trusting nature, does not face any problems, Vijayendra said, in this context, Prime Minister Narendra Modi- led central government, along with agricultural incentive schemes, has taken precautionary measures to protect farmers. "The state government too needs to take committed steps in this regard, so that the lives of farmers are not affected," he said. To strengthen the Agriculture Department and to take strict action against the networks that cheat farmers, a police vigilance team should be formed, the BJP leader said, adding hashtag "CongressFailsKarnataka". Targeting the Congress government citing media reports about farmers protest in some parts, against urea shortage, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R Ashoka said, the Congress government should have been alert and paid attention towards ensuring storage of necessary amount of fertilizer and its timely distribution, when the monsoon arrived a month in advance this time. Instead, those in the government completely neglected the farmers in the heat of factional fights for power or chair, Ashoka said in a post on 'X'. "The curse of the farms will affect this Congress government," he added.

Over a million Americans data 'hacked': Allianz Life says majority of customers' data stolen; FBI notified
Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America has suffered a major hacker attack affecting millions of customers. A 'malicious threat actor' gained access to a third-party, cloud-based system used by Allianz and obtained personally identifiable data related to the majority of customers as well as financial professionals and some employees, Allianz Life said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg. Hackers gained access to personal data on the majority of the 1.4 million customers of Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, the company confirmed. 'The threat actor was able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majority of Allianz Life's customers, financial professionals, and select Allianz Life employees, using a social engineering technique,' the statement added. Allianz Life said its investigation is ongoing and that the company has begun reaching out to the impacted individuals and disclosed it in a filing with the Maine attorney general's office. The company claimed that its own systems were not accessed, just the third-party's platform. It said the incident involves only Allianz Life in the U.S., not other Allianz corporate entities.
