Velvet hopes to spark renewed interest in Dusun with new album
Published on: Wed, May 14, 2025 Text Size: Velvet's ambition is to encourage a new generation to embrace their mother tongues, using music as a medium for cultural revival and pride. Kota Kinabalu: Sabahan singer-songwriter Velvet Aduk hopes to spark renewed interest in indigenous languages with the release of her long-awaited Dusun-language album, Ogingol, which dropped on May 10 across all major streaming platforms. The nine-track album is a deeply personal tribute to her Dusun and Kadazan roots, blending contemporary musical styles with ancestral dialects to produce something fresh and meaningful. Titled after its lead track, Ogingol, which translates to 'beautiful', the album features original songs that explore themes of identity, belonging, and cultural pride. Other tracks include Nokosuai, Bolintuongon, Mintogod, Miang-Miang Keladi, Kaandaman, Nouyan (a duet with Arddley Nicholas), Kopiruba Wagu Insan Tadau, and Koupusan Ginawo Ku. Most of the songs were written and composed by Velvet herself, and the album was co-produced and co-arranged by longtime collaborator Brandon Laurie, with Andy O'Mail on lead guitar. Notably, Kaandaman, written in Kadazan, marks Brandon's debut as a songwriter, expanding the creative team's contribution to preserving native expression. 'This album is my way of promoting and preserving my culture, just as we do every year during Kaamatan,' Velvet said. 'It is not just music – it is my way of learning, remembering, and giving back,' she added, describing the process as both educational and emotionally grounding. Raised in Kampung Inobong, Penampang, Velvet grew up immersed in the language of her ancestors, a connection that profoundly shaped her songwriting. Through her lyrics, she captures the richness of Dusun and Kadazan dialects as spoken across Sabah, weaving linguistic diversity into the fabric of her melodies. Far from a traditional folk collection, Ogingol pushes the boundaries of Dusun music, delivering polished arrangements that range from introspective ballads to radio-ready pop. 'I want Dusun songs to sound elegant and classy,' she explained, highlighting her desire to balance artistic authenticity with listener accessibility. Each track blends Velvet's distinctive vocal style with modern instrumentation, setting a new benchmark for contemporary indigenous music. The duet Nouyan features Arddley Nicholas, the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 23 Best Male Vocal award winner, further boosting the album's musical intensity. Velvet's ambition is to encourage a new generation to embrace their mother tongues, using music as a medium for cultural revival and pride. The album is now streaming globally on Spotify, iTunes, YouTube Music and other digital platforms, inviting listeners everywhere to discover the beauty of Sabah's native languages. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #SHOWBIZ: Sabahan celebration of family values marks start of MIFFest 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: "Ninavau", a heart-warming, 90-minute family drama that showcases Kadazan-Dusun culture and highlights indigenous family life in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, heralded the start of the week-long 8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) yesterday. Directed by Sabahan Bebbra Mailin, who is marking her big screen debut, "Ninavau" tells the story of a young woman who studied in Kuala Lumpur and returns to her hometown Kota Kinabalu, with a "secret" that her widowed father Edward and feisty younger sister Elvira struggle to accept. To complicate matters, Edward has been scammed into parting with a six-figure sum of money, and Elvira is preparing for a marriage that she is not ready for. At the launch of the festival in MyTown Mall, Cheras yesterday, Bebbra said that "Ninavau" not only showcased the customs and culture of indigenous Sabahans, but also highlighted their interactions with their friends from Peninsular Malaysia, and the "hiccups" that had to be navigated. "Most of our actors and actresses are newcomers, but they were very dedicated to bringing each of their characters to life. The story of our heroine, Ninavau, and her family members is rooted in reality," she said. The main actress Jovinea Jim said that she could identify with Ninavau, as she had encountered somewhat similar experiences as the character. "The story is told from her point of view, but each major character is well-developed and speaks directly to the audience. Here's a story that's close to Malaysians' hearts and can be appreciated by everyone," she said. Besides Jovinea, "Ninavau" also stars Edward Sinsong as the protagonist's father and Tati Eliana Tonny as her sister. MIFFest's founder Joanne Goh said that this year's festival, with the theme "Infinity," continued its predecessors' mission of championing homegrown storytelling and embracing international co-productions. She said: "MIFFest also partners with the 25th European Union Film Festival to present 15 European titles. The "MIFFest x EUFF" opens with Czech drama "Year of the Widow" and features Denmark's "The Girl with the Needle" and Ukraine's "Taste of Freedom." Goh added that MIFFest highlights six Southeast Asian movies, including Vietnam's "Cu Li Never Cries" and Singapore's "Stranger Eyes." "It has 62 films from 48 countries," she said, adding that 38 Malaysian films are in the event. The festival honours Hong Kong action hero Thomas Tam, or Ti Lung, with a lifetime achievement award. The 78-year-old star will receive the honour at the Malaysia Golden Global Awards ceremony at Zepp KL, on July 26. "MIFFest celebrates Indian movie legend Raj Kapoor's centenary with screenings of "Awara" and "Bobby"," said Goh. She added that MIFFest was honouring Indonesian actor Reza Rahadian, who will receive the Award for Excellent Achievement in Film. He is in the festival's jury panel alongside British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, Malaysian actress Diana Danielle, Hong Kong actress Jennifer Yu, and Indian filmmaker Rima Das. Goh said that the competition features nine movies, with Palestinian drama "All That's Left of You" by Cherien Dabis leading the race with seven nominations. Goh said: "Since our establishment in 2016, we have offered a wide range of opportunities and platforms for filmmakers to showcase their work. "MIFFest offers audiences a chance to embark on a cinematic journey through films from diverse cultures. We aspire to be a space where global and local voices unite." This year, singer-songwriter and actress Daiyan Trisha, actress Siti Saleha Baharom, and actor Bront Palarae serve as MIFFest ambassadors, while United States-based Malaysian filmmaker Rachel Tan is promoting her new romantic comedy, partly set in Kuala Lumpur, "Worth the Wait".

With ‘Jump', Blackpink becomes first K-pop act to score two Spotify Global No. 1s (VIDEO)
SEOUL, July 20 — Blackpink is proving once again that they're not just queens of K-pop — they're a global pop force. The quartet's latest single Jump has skyrocketed to No. 1 on Spotify's Global Weekly Top Songs chart, making them the first K-pop group ever to top the chart twice, reported The Korea Herald. The song, released earlier this month, follows the group's 2022 hit Shut Down — also a chart-topper — and now cements Blackpink as the K-pop act with both the first and most No. 1 entries on the global chart. According to their label YG Entertainment, Jump racked up more than 44.7 million streams in a single week, the biggest debut for any song released in 2025 so far. It also held the No. 1 spot on Spotify's global daily chart for six consecutive days. Their Spotify success is only part of the story. Jump debuted at No. 18 on the UK Official Singles Chart, marking Blackpink's highest placement to date and their ninth overall appearance on the British chart. Over on YouTube, the music video for Jump — which dropped on July 11 — made an immediate splash. It was the most-viewed video globally within 24 hours of release and has remained No. 1 on YouTube's Global Daily Top Music Videos chart for a full week. The group is currently on the road with their Blackpink World Tour, covering 16 cities and 31 shows, including Bangkok, Jakarta, Bulacan and Singapore.
