Perak appoints 658 new village chiefs
Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said that another 170 village chiefs will be appointed in the second round, bringing the total to 827 across the state.
"Those appointed must not exceed 65 years old. If they are, we have to replace them," he told reporters after officiating the Simposium Komuniti Orang Asli Perak 2025.
Saarani explained that appointments in phases are made based on age limit and requests from political parties.
'There were also changes following requests from ruling political parties. For instance, following internal branch-level elections in PKR, there were changes in positions," he said.
When asked whether there were many new faces among the appointees, Saarani said yes.
'Yes, quite a number, although I don't have the exact figures. Many were replaced due to age.
"When appointing new individuals, we must be cautious. They must live in the village they serve, we can't appoint someone who resides elsewhere to lead another village," he said.
On whether youth representation was included, Saarani said there were younger individuals appointed.
'For example, in Lenggong, we appointed village chiefs aged 31, 32, and 33. We want a balance between experience and fresh perspectives. Younger appointees also have more time to grow in the role,' he said.
When asked about female representation, Saarani added that women were also appointed.

Fuziah denies PKR branch dissolutions amid wave of resignations, says party structure remains intact
KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 – PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh has reportedly confirmed that no party divisions or wings have been dissolved, despite a recent wave of grassroots resignations. She said the number of resignations remains below the constitutional requirement for dissolution, which mandates that at least two-thirds of a committee must step down, a figure that varies based on branch size. 'The party constitution clearly outlines the requirements, and unless those are fulfilled, the structure remains intact,' she was quoted telling Free Malaysia Today. Using the Lenggong branch as an example, Fuziah noted that 15 members had resigned from a 31-member committee, falling short of the 21 resignations required to trigger dissolution. Fuziah said the party treats all resignations seriously but urged members to use internal mechanisms to address grievances. She added that the leadership is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to maintaining party stability and discipline. 'There may be those trying to disrupt or discredit the party from within or outside, but we remain focused,' she said. This comes as Ahmad Nizam Noh, who lost the contest for Lenggong branch chief, reportedly lodged a complaint with the Registrar of Societies after all 15 members of his faction resigned in protest. Several youth leaders in the Selayang branch also reportedly stepped down after their allies were defeated in recent internal elections. In May, Fuziah had dismissed speculation of divisions within the party following the results of its division-level elections. The results for all 220 PKR divisions nationwide were recently completed and subsequently confirmed and finalised by the party's central leadership council. Fuziah said PKR had appointed a third-party auditor based overseas to examine the election results, and the findings showed no irregularities.

GRS to Sabah PKR: Look at own mirror
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Nizam (left) was responding to Mustapha (right), who recently said PKR would reconsider its cooperation with GRS in the state election. TAWAU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) will continue prioritising the Sabahan development agenda despite recent legal issues involving several political figures in the state, said its Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and Apas Assemblyman, said GRS, particularly Gagasan Rakyat, had been monitoring the situation and is prepared for any developments ahead of the coming state election. 'These issues appear to be driven by certain political interests and will not derail our coalition's focus on delivering what has been promised to the people of Sabah,' he said. 'We must remember that no one is guilty until proven so in court. We have confidence in the justice system and believe all individuals should be treated fairly under the law,' he added. He told reporters after officiating the Durian Crop Technology Transformation Course organised by the Sabah Agriculture Department at Dewan Sri Tawau, here. Nizam was responding to PKR State Leadership Council (MPN) Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, who recently said PKR would reconsider its cooperation with GRS in the state election. Mustapha's comment followed allegations linking six political leaders from GRS component parties; three from Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and three from Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) – to a reported mining-related controversy. Nizam said PKR should also reflect on its own situation, as some of its aligned parties are also facing legal scrutiny. 'There's no need to name anyone, but all parties are facing similar circumstances,' he said. He believes the situation will not disrupt the overall direction set by GRS under the leadership of the Chief Minister. According to Nizam, the current administration has managed to reposition Sabah on the right development track and will continue working towards long-term plans aimed at improving the state's future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
