Cruelty is Britain's biggest export

The Mayflower's transatlantic voyage took 66 days. Love Island's has taken six years. But at last, the grotesque staple of Britain's late-2010s summer evenings is having its moment in the Yankee sun. We should only be surprised that it took so long.
In one of this week's episodes, the islanders competed in the traditional heart-rate challenge – a pseudo-sexual ritual where the winner is whoever most dramatically spikes another contestant's pulse. Huda Mustafa, a 24-year-old influencer from North Carolina, caused villa-wide fervour with her performance. She straddled and kissed her friend's partner, before doing something so outrageous that the cameras cut away. Other islanders fumed. Social media frothed, speculating furiously. Not long afterwards, Child Protective Services received reports from viewers accusing Mustafa of being unfit to look after her children.
Love Island USA first aired in 2019, but it was only with this season, the seventh, that steady growth has exploded into cultural ubiquity. Some 39 per cent of this season's viewers are new to the show. The entire American internet has put in their two cents, then their next two cents, again and again, like addicts at a Vegas slot machine. Each plot twist has been dissected with the feverish moralism once reserved for cable news. Debates about who's right and who's toxic have established Love Island USA as reality TV royalty.
British fans hardly need reminding of Love Island's 2017-2018 heyday: Casa Amor, Ian Stirling, 'I've got a text', 'Can I pull you for a chat?', 'heads being turned', 'my type on paper', Molly-Mae. They also hardly need reminding what followed it. In 2018, a former contestant, Sophie Gradon, died by suicide. In 2019, Mike Thalassitis, another contestant, died the same way. The following year, the show's host Caroline Flack took her own life.
There have been countless attempts to translate British television for an American audience, but very few successes: something about the sarcasm, the derision, the ironies of class, schooling and character simply do not translate. One notable miss was the 'bus wankers' scene from The Inbetweeners: 'bus turds' just didn't hit right. Shows that did thrive – The Office, Shameless – did so only by sanding off the sharp British edges and offering cleaner, happier arcs.
But one side of British TV has always flourished in America: degrading reality TV. Simon Cowell's scornful empire of false idols and no-talents was a smash hit when it transferred to the States. And American audiences delighted in Anne Robinson's savage put-downs with gleeful surprise. The British recipe for humiliating members of the public proved a covetable commodity, which stateside producers and viewers alike salivate over.
The French artist Antonin Artaud developed the concept of the 'Theatre of Cruelty'. In theatre, he said, we should make a 'believable reality which gives the heart and the senses that kind of concrete bite which all true sensation requires'. But Artaud was writing in the 1930s: he did not foresee how catharsis would curdle into abuse.
The American version of Love Island turns the screws even tighter. Ad breaks come twice as often, so scenes must be faster, louder, crueller. There's no time for exposition or heart-felt scenes. Every overproduced moment has to be a sound-bite or a story. And of course, viewers watch with one eye on their phone, the online reaction being as much part of the entertainment as the show itself. Love Island may have reached American shores but the transformative #BeKind movement that emerged in the UK after Flack's death must have drowned somewhere in the Atlantic. Britain imports crude oil from America, but exports something far filthier: cruelty.

Cierra Ortega exits 'Love Island USA' villa following backlash over resurfaced racial slur posts

Cierra Ortega, a contestant of this summer's 'Love Island USA' left the villa just a week before the finale of the hit reality series is set to air on Peacock. Her departure, announced Sunday, followed weeks of uproar from viewers after old posts from Ortega resurfaced that contained a racial slur against Asian people. The show's narrator, Iain Stirling, announced Ortega had departed 'due to a personal situation' early in Sunday's episode. Ortega becomes the second contestant this season to depart the show amid controversy due to past social media posts. Yulissa Escobar abruptly exited last month in the second episode after clips of her using racist language resurfaced online. Her departure was also not explained in the show. A spokesperson for the show declined to comment Monday. Ortega's family posted to her Instagram story Sunday evening following the announcement of her departure, asking the public 'for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency. 'While Cierra is not in the villa anymore, she is still away. She hasn't had the chance to process any of this or speak for herself," her family wrote. "But we know our daughter. We know her heart. And when she returns, we believe she'll face this with honesty, growth, and grace.' Her family said they, along with Ortega's friends and online supporters, have received threats, attacks and cruel messages on social media, noting that 'no one deserve that kind of hate, no matter what mistakes they've made.' 'Love Island USA' is an American spin-off of the original U.K. series and is airing its seventh season. The show airs daily except Wednesdays and brings young singles together in a remote villa in Fiji to explore connections with the ultimate goal of finding love. Couples undergo challenges and are encouraged test their romantic connections as new contestants are introduced. Islanders are routinely 'dumped' from the villa throughout the series as stronger couples form. The winning couple receives $100,000. The show, which strips contestants of their phones or access to the outside world, has previously asked fans to avoid cyberbullying contestants. Host Ariana Madix called for fans to stop doxxing and harassing the show's stars in a recent interview with The Associated Press. Ortega entered the villa at the end of the first episode as a bombshell, one of the first in a steady stream of new contestants who come in after the show began, often expected to disrupt existing couples and create new relationship dynamics. Ortega quickly coupled up with Nic Vansteenberghe, whom she remained with up until her departure. Her exit broke up one of the few consistent couples of the season. The couple had just announced a few episodes prior they were 'closed off,' a popular 'Love Island' phrase to indicate neither contestant was interested in exploring a connection with any other islander. 'Before Cierra had left, my mind was clear. I knew what the future would look like, and now, I'm lost,' Vansteenberghe said during Sunday's episode. Vansteenberghe stayed on the show as a single islander after Ortega left, and he ultimately re-coupled with fellow contestant Olandria Carthen before the end of the episode. Belle-A Walker, a contestant who was dumped earlier this season, took to Instagram to express heartbreak over Ortega's resurfaced posts. Walker, who is Asian American, said she is 'deeply appreciative' of the show's producers 'for taking a stand and making it clear that racism of any kind is not tolerated.' 'Asian hate is oftentimes overlooked and dismissed. But being a first-generation American, I have personally witnessed and experienced how real and hurtful comments like these are," Walker wrote on her Instagram story page. "It is my hope that this situation can help shed light on how big of an issue anti-Asian hate really is.'

Love Island fans laud Meg for 'FINALLY waking up' to the cracks in her romance with Dejon - as he's tempted to stray in Casa Amor

She's been part of one of the most solid, yet still open, couples of the series. But it seems that Love Island's Meg Moore may finally be starting to doubt her romance with Dejon Noel Williams, to the welcome relief of fans. As Dejon's head was turned by Casa Amor bombshell Andrada Pop, Meg grew increasingly concerned about how they were yet to declare themselves 'closed off,' despite being coupled up for four weeks. Her doubts only grew following the Raunchy Race, which saw Dejon take part in an array of sexy challenges, which included kissing several Casa Amor girls. Confiding in the other girls, Meg questioned why Dejon had been so reluctant to declare their romance exclusive, unaware that he was slowly being tempted to explore things with Andrada. Fans took to X to praise Meg for seeing the light, especially as she had previously doubted Dejon's commitment to her on numerous occasions. Posts included: 'MEG FINALLY SEEING THE LIGHT???' 'The ''my Meg'' method is finally getting patched? MEG IS WAKING UP;' 'You can't call me ''my Meg'' if you still want to be open'' Is Meg finally having sense knocked into her? 'Meg and Dejon downfall is pending!' Earlier in the episode, a game of Raunchy Races sent tensions in the villa spilling over, as Shakira and Meg exchanged words in a dramatic spat. A text requested the boy with the most tattoos to snog the girl he thinks is relationship material. Questioning which guy would be taking part in the challenge for Casa Amor, Meg questioned: 'Who's got the most tattoos, D?' Alluding to Meg's reactions, Shakira tells the new boys: 'Trust me you don't want to see when D comes back off a date… Scary.' Things got heated as Meg responded: 'No it's not… I'm not laughing, Shakira.' Shakira then hit back: 'Aww, grow up Meg,' leaving things pensive between them. Elsewhere in the episode, one particular hunk's wild behaviour has sparked fury among fans, with Harrison Solomon quick to jump into bed with Lauren Wood, despite 'crying over Toni Laites' just days earlier. Harrison had insisted that he only had eyes for Toni after being tempted to couple up with Helena Ford, but this commitment proved to be short-lived. On his first night in Casa Amor, Harrison was quick to share a kiss with Lauren before sharing a bed with her, and he himself admitted that there was plenty of sexual tension between them. With Toni unknowingly waiting for Harrison back in the main villa, his behaviour led many fans to call for her to couple up with one of the male bombshells. Posts on X included: 'The Harrison is being on NIGHT ONE is actually mad considering he was crying over Toni a few days ago;' 'It took Harrison to lipse 4 girls in a challenge and a good night's sleep before realising he doesn't want to disrespect Toni?' 'Harrison needs to go. I hope Toni finds someone else during Casa;' 'It didn't take much for Harrison to turn his head;' 'Harrison is all over the place, I bet he will still want someone else' 'Harrison definitely has a type. She's literally Toni 2.0;' 'NGL Harrison and the new girl look great together. I hope Toni finds her man, cause this one is not hers;' 'I'd be so mad if Toni doesn't pick anyone, Harrison is actually worse than Harry to me. Ewww.' Love Island continues on Wednesday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Love Island viewers stunned as Emma shares huge revelation about ex Harry as she confronts him over their relationship

Love Island viewers were left stunned during Monday's show when Emma Munro shared a huge relationship about her ex Harry Crossley. The lothario was left stunned on Sunday when his former girlfriend was revealed to be one of the six new Casa Amor ladies, with the brunette beauty wasting no time in giving him some harsh home truths. But in the latest installment of the ITV2 dating show, Emma dropped a bombshell about Harry whilst confronting him about how he treated her in their relationship. As they sat in the garden, Emma, who dated Harry for four years, fumed: 'You've brought girls into our home, and I wouldn't do that to you because that was the rules. 'And you think the rules don't apply to you. It's my house Harry. You think as soon as a boundary's in place, cross it. You think "oh yes, let me f**k this up." Like there's no need for any other women to be in my house.' As Harry tried to explain himself, he insisted he's 'always here' for her, recalling he said that very thing to her in a letter her wrote to her 'years ago.' However, Emma was quick to call him out on his mistake, revealing he's actually penned the note in February. Amid her ex's confusion about the date, Emma remarked: 'We make the choice not to be together because we know that you can't give me what I need. And that's why, it's not because we don't love each other, we have to be strong enough to stand on that decision.' Watching the scenes unfold, fans were left dumbfounded by Harry's audacity to cheat in the home he shared with Emma, with several taking to X to have their say. They penned: 'Harry cheated on Emma with multiple girls in THEIR OWN HOUSE??? Yh no that tells me everything I need to know 'Emma has clocked and embarrassed Harry on national television. She got the last laugh i have no choice but to applaud.' 'HARRY BROUGHT GIRLS INTO EMMAS HOME WHEN THEY WERE TOGETHER???' ''fact of the matter is, you brought girls into our home' Emma really said I'm going to air all your dirty laundry.' 'Harry was cheating on Emma in her own house??!!! Yeah Harry mate take a seat.' Watching the scenes unfold, fans were left dumbfounded by Harry's audacity to cheat in the home he shared with Emma, with several taking to X to have their say 'Harry is one nasty piece a man. Bringing girls to Emma's house and cheating. SLEEZEBALL.' 'Harry cheated and brought a woman into Emma's house? Diabolical, my God.' The revelation came after Harry was confronted by Emma over his 'disgraceful' behaviour as she branded him and Helena 'snakes'. After getting settled in Casa Amor, Harry and Emma step away to catch up one-on-one, and the beauty is quick to lay some home truths on Harry about his 'disgraceful' behaviour with Helena. He begins: 'Well welcome to the mad house. Are you just... you're looking for some fun? I mean, what are you thinking?' Emma explains: 'Well I'm here for the same reason as everyone else. I'm here to find someone.' However, as Harry tries to get flirtatious with her, she is quick to shut him down and tells him to 'drop the act'. He says: 'Why are you trying to be all wholesome? You little freak' causing Emma to hit back: 'Don't use that language with me. Drop the act. No, drop the act real quick. That chat, you can save that for Helena.' After getting settled in Casa Amor, Harry and Emma step away to catch up, and the beauty is quick to lay some home truths on Harry about his 'disgraceful' behaviour with Helena Attempting to continue, she says: 'But your behaviour Harry...' but Harry interrupts to complain: 'No, I don't need you to come and tell me off.' But Emma continues regardless, saying: 'It's disgraceful though… like, how are you still doing the same thing? The way you've been moving with Helena honestly…' She then tells him: 'You two deserve each other, I think you're a great couple' causing Harry to thank her, before she finishes: '…two snakes.' Love Island continues Tuesday at 9pm on ITV2.
