Godiva Festival 'a must' for The Specials' Neville Staple

BBC News18 hours ago
"I love being on stage and I had to do Coventry."Despite serious health concerns, there was no way The Specials' Neville Staple was going to miss playing the city's Godiva Festival.Staple, one of the founders of the legendary ska revivalists, has been told he can only play five gigs a year, after having to cancel several gigs and festival sets last year when he was diagnosed with a serious heart defect. His Godiva performance on Saturday saw him back in the city where The Specials first took to the stage after forming in 1977.
"I've missed being on stage so much," Staple told BBC CWR, explaining that after discussions with his wife and his doctor he accepted he had to cut back on gigs.Staple's wife and fellow musician Christine "Sugary" Staple knew his heart was immediately set on playing Godiva, where she also played in the band's line-up."He said I've got to do Coventry – out of the five [shows], Coventry is a must," she said.
The three-day Godiva festival, which showcases local acts as well as famous bands, will end later with a headline set from Ocean Colour Scene. The Specials were at the forefront of the 2 Tone movement that started in Coventry in the late 1970s, quickly gaining national acclaim. The genre blended Jamaican reggae, ska, and British punk music.Along with the likes of The Beat, The Selecter and Madness, the band captured the mood of the late 1970s, when future prospects for young people looked bleak. Now firmly fixed in Coventry's cultural heritage, 2 Tone continues to inspire successive generations, with tributes posted across the city when The Specials' frontman Terry Hall died in 2022.One of Hall's piano's has been on display at Godiva this year, alongside a stall from Tonic Music for Mental Health, a charity he supported.
"Sugary" Staple described the gig as "a homecoming" and added that "we love Godiva, we've got history at Godiva."The couple have also been involved with anti-knife crime campaigning in recent years, after their grandson Fidel Glasgow was fatally stabbed in Coventry in 2018.On Saturday, Staple's message to people in the city was: "Stay positive, love one another, and put away those knives."

‘I don't know whether I'm going to be invited back' – Comedian given death stare after bodychecking Lewis Hamilton at F1

LEWIS HAMILTON was accused of giving a 'death stare' to comedian Jack Whitehall at the British Grand Prix. Whitehall accidentally bumped into Hamilton moments before Sunday's thrilling race, while attempting to mingle with the drivers on the grid walk. 4 4 4 Hamilton was walking behind George Russell and Lando Norris, on their way to start the rainy race. While Russell and eventual winner Norris passed through the cordoned off walkway without any problems, Hamilton was stopped in his tracks by Whitehall coming out in front of him. The comedian had been signalled to quickly pass through by a Mercedes team member, before almost body-checking the seven-time world champion. Speaking to Sky Sports, Whitehall said: "Just now when I was being invited to the grid I nearly body-checked Sir Lewis Hamilton. "I don't know whether I'm going to be invited back again, it was a very cold stare." The Bad Education star, who took his mum along to Silverstone, speculated that his icy reception may have been payback for past jokes about Hamilton. Whitehall added: "Maybe that was for the jokes I made at F1 75 as well and not just the body-check. "My mum is very excited to see Martin Brundle, and I brought her with me. She said that he is her hall pass, whatever that means...' Whitehall and Hamilton have met several times before, including on The Graham Norton Show seven years ago. Despite the pre-race chaos, it didn't affect Hamilton in the early stages at Silverstone. After qualifying fifth, the 40-year-old moved up a place after overtaking ex-teammate Russell on the opening lap. Max Verstappen initially kept his lead from the start, ahead of McLaren stars Oscar Piastri and Norris. The Aussie driver soon got ahead just as rain started to fall heavily, but was handed a 10-second penalty after stewards said he drove erratically during the restart after the first Safety Car. Piastri was penalised for slowing too much when preparing to lead the pack away following another Safety Car restart, while a spin for Verstappen moments later saw the Dutchman drop backwards. As conditions changed and drivers started to switch to slick tyres later on, Piastri served his penalty during his final pit stop and Norris took the lead. Nico Hulkenberg, 37, took his first podium finish at the 239th attempt - setting a new record for the longest time before finishing in the top three - after a strong race for Sauber. The German managed to keep Hamilton 's Ferrari at bay in the closing laps as Verstappen came home fifth. Meanwhile, Norris would later leave Silverstone with a cut on his face after a cameraman fell on top of him as a fence collapsed during his celebrations. 4

Amanda Holden puts on a cheeky display as she recreates iconic raunchy tennis moment for Wimbledon beauty campaign

Amanda Holden put on a cheeky display as she recreated an iconic raunchy tennis moment for a Wimbledon beauty campaign. The radio presenter, 54, took to Instagram on Sunday to show off her assets for a Revive Collagen campaign. Amanda opted for a sporty ensemble in the snap, wearing a pink racer-back sports bra with a matching high-waisted pleated tennis skirt. But she added a racy edge to the picture as she lifted up her skirt exposing her bottom. The snap was a recreation of a photograph taken by then-30-year-old Martin Elliot of his 18-year-old girlfriend Fiona Butler, where she was seen on the tennis court lifting up her dress exposing that she was wearing no underwear. It was first published as part of a calendar by Athena for the 1977 Silver Jubilee. 'Cheeky? @revivecollagen. Are you enjoying Wimbledon? ☀️' she captioned the snap. It comes days after Amanda put on a leggy display in a brown skort for a go-karting race in central London against F1 legend Jenson Button. After showing off her look in an Instagram video earlier in the day, Amanda was snapped arriving in sunny Leicester Square looking noticeably tanned. Sporting an all-brown ensemble consisting of the £125 skort from The Frankie Shop and a coordinated silk tank top from Mint Velvet, Amanda seemed thrilled to be trying her luck at go-karting. However it seems Jenson, who enjoyed a 17-year career in Formula 1, unsurprisingly got the best of the rookie as he was pictured whizzing around a corner in-front of Amanda. The contest was played in great spirits however, with the blonde stunner and the victorious Jenson embracing with a hug afterwards. Earlier in the day Amanda had posted videos to her Instagram showing off her look, in particular the rarely-seen skort. A skort is a pair of shorts covered by a flap over its front and sometimes back giving it the appearance of a skirt. And the Britain's Got Talent judge certainly pulled the look off, looking as sensational as ever while putting on a leggy display in the all brown outfit. Amanda was eager to show off her unique fashion-choice for the day, making absolutely sure her followers knew 'it's a skort!' Sharing a video to her Instagram Stories, Amanda displayed her long tanned legs in the outfit, saying: 'Good morning, happy Thursday! 'I'm excited because the sun's coming out and hopefully today is going to be a good day. 'I'm wearing this extraordinary top which is from Mint Velvet, who I'm telling you are smashing it. 'It pairs really nicely with this skort, it's a skort! You think it's a skirt but (pulling up the flap) it's a skort from The Frankie Shop. 'I'm basically very brown today. It's Thursday and on Thursdays we wear brown.' Amanda no doubt topped up her tan during a recent trip to Greece with comedian Alan Carr, which she only returned from earlier this week. The pair of presenters had jetted off to film their BBC renovations show, named Amanda and Alan's Greek Job, which has been in the works for months. But Amanda and Alan made sure the trip was not all work no play as they made time between scenes to film a lip-syncing video to the hit Together from the Gypsy musical. In the clip, Amanda sizzled in a black and white Away That Day Cannes One-Piece as she danced and sang next to Alan, 49, who wore green shorts and a blue T-shirt.
