UK airport's baffling passport warning after huge £100m extension update
A long-awaited revamp to a tiny UK airport has resulted in a rather strange passport warning being issued to Brits.
Earlier this month, Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) revealed it had completed the first phase of its ambitious terminal expansion project, which is slated to cost a whopping £100 million. The upgrade boasts a host of new facilities including additional seating, two new lounges, an improved baggage reclaim area, and an upgraded passport control area.
The new terminal, which all arriving and departing passengers will go through, has 83 per cent more seating, a range of food and drink offerings including a Burger King and a new bar, as well as a brand new Six Eight One Premium Lounge. LBA chief executive officer Vincent Hodder said it was the 'first major improvement to our terminal since its opening in 1968 and is long overdue'.
Details of the refurbishment were first announced back in 2018 as part of bold plans to create a new terminal at the south end of the runway. However, the original blueprints were axed several years later due to 'excessive delays'. Buildings for the new extension then started in 2023.
Part of the upgrade also includes new e-gates - which have appeared to have sparked confusion online. In a recent TikTok video, LBA showed off the machines, which require passengers to scan their boarding pass before being allowed through automatic gates, stating: "Do you hear that? You don't need your passport. You don't need your passport. You don't need your passport."
LBA captioned the post: "You only need your boarding card (paper or digital) to go through our e-gates, NOT your passport!" However, some viewers misconstrued the post into thinking they no longer need to bring their passports along to the airport at all.
"How would one get back [to the UK] if one never took a passport?" one person commented. Another wrote: "Oh this ain't going to go down well when people start turning up without passports," while a third pointed out: "Bold move from the graphic design team." Others criticised the airport for relying on the 'common sense' of the public to understand the post properly.
The airport clarified in the comments section, that travellers 'obviously' do need a passport to leave the country, and that the post was explicitly referencing the e-gates. In a separate video, the hub joked about the confusion with a video captioned: "Can't believe we've got to say this but please don't try [and] travel without your passport..."
Speaking to the Mirror about the humorous TikTok videos, a spokesperson for LBA said: "It's often best to take a light-hearted approach with some of the more routine airport processes that help us ensure customers are prepped and ready to travel in the best possible way. We've recently shared some light-hearted content to help customers use our newly installed security e-gates as well as responding to customers wanting to smoke after security.
"For most, travelling through an airport is a fun time. We want to ensure customers have the necessary information to help make their journey run as smoothly as possible."

To make it easy for travellers, the Government and British border forces are clear about how much of each product you can bring in. Importing alcohol to Britain Bringing alcohol into the UK is legal, but there are strict limits on how much alcohol you can take with you through customs. You can bring a total of 4 litres of a spirit over 22 per cent ABV (alcohol by volume) or 9 litres of an alcohol under 22 per cent ABV. However, you cannot bring both quantities. If you have a variety of alcoholic products with you, then they must total the same amount listed above. For example, 4.5 litres of cider (a drink under 22 per cent ABV) and 2 litres of a spirit above 22 per cent ABV would be allowed into Britain. This is because each quantity is equivalent to 50 per cent of the legal amount. Meanwhile, 4 litres of a spirit and 9 litres of cider would be double the amount which you can import. Failing to follow customs law could see you being handed a £2,500 fine per contravention. UK airport reveals new security rules for passengers If the amount of imported alcohol is exceptionally high or you are a repeat offender, you could be slapped with a prison sentence. The length of the sentence could vary greatly, depending on your crime. There are strict limits on tobacco products too UK law allows you to bring a maximum 200 cigarettes OR 100 cigarillos OR 50 cigars of 250g of tobacco (including shisha) OR 200 sticks of tobacco for heating to Britain. Like alcohol, you must combine these allowances. That would mean you could bring 100 cigarettes and 25 cigars, for example, as each is at 50 per cent of the total allowed in. Tobacco products, like alcohol, can only be brought into the country by someone over the age of 17. Also, tobacco and alcohol quantities are counted as entirely separate so you don't get a larger quantity of one by taking none of the other. Luxury goods at the border Luxury goods, including perfume or electrical items, can often be imported into the UK without paying duty or tax. However, if the sum total of the items exceeds £390, you will have to pay tax on every item - not just the ones which push you over the limit. For people arriving by private plane or boat for leisure, the allowance is £270. Meat, milk and plants are banned The importation of meat, honey and dairy is strictly prohibited. The only exception to this rule is to infant milk or medical food, though both amounts cannot exceed 2kg. Failing to follow these rules could see you being slapped with a staggering £5000 fine. EU arrivals are the only group allowed to take high-priority plants into the country, though they will need to apply beforehand for a phytosanitary certificate. Restrictions on cash Cash up to a total of £10,000 can be brought into Britain, though this must be declared 72 hours in advance of your arrival. Declarations on all products listed here must be made, even if you are just transferring flight. Failing to declare something could result in you receiving a criminal sentence.

As passengers board their flights for summer holidays, a flight attendant has shared the 'filthiest parts' of a plane that you should avoid touching - and it's more places than you might expect A flight attendant has shared important advice to passengers wanting to wash their hands on a plane, suggesting it could introduce more germs than it removes. Cher, a seasoned flight attendant with five years under her belt, took to social media to expose the "filthiest parts" of an aircraft as holidaymakers begin boarding flights for their much-deserved summer breaks. Known as @cherdallas on TikTok, the cabin crew member revealed: "I've seen people vomit inside the bathroom sinks numerous times so if you drop sometimes in there, I would consider it a loss. Never ever have I seen the sinks get cleaned out. The sink water that you wash your hands with is also filthy. You're not allowed to drink it because it has too much bacteria in it so washing your hands with it is probably not great. "I don't know what's in it but it constantly degrades my nails and makes them extremely brittle whether I have paint on them, gel or dip, it completely degrades the outside of it." She also claimed she has never witnessed anyone clean the window shades and has only once seen anyone clean the toilet seat. She advises passengers to always keep their shoes on as the plane carpet is riddled with germs and doesn't receive the care it needs between flights. In her post, she warned: "Sorry in advance if this grosses you out the next time you fly but everyone should have the facts." Reacting to her post, one user admitted: "I just realised that no matter how much I sanitise and clean everything around me on a plane, it's still awful." Another user chimed in: "I mean, if they wouldn't clean the sink and toilet seats when landing in a destination I am quite sure you couldn't even use them anymore. Normally when landing cleaners come to clean them - flight attendant." A third user commented: "Seat pockets are filthy too. I've seen the cleaning crew wipe stuff down real quick, but in general airplanes are dirty. I was sick for months when I first started as a flight attendant, no wonder." Another user remarked: "One of the reasons I take Dramamine so I can sleep throughout the flight. Also no to skincare on flights! You just need a face oil if your skin feels dry and SPF." Yet another user added: "I carry alcohol wipes and clean all surfaces around me. I also carry hand sanitiser and rub it before eating or rubbing my face."
