Over 150,000 flock to Ajwaa Al Ashkharah
Al Ashkharah in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate is abuzz as the Ajwaa Al Ashkharah 2025 Festival welcomed over 150,000 visitors in the first few days. This turnout signals a strong start for the annual summer event, which blends heritage, entertainment and family-friendly activities in a vibrant setting by the sea.
The festival, held at Al Ashkharah Public Park, has transformed the serene coastal town into a hub of cultural and social activity, attracting families, youth and tourists. Running through August 9, 2025, the festival aims to promote domestic tourism and showcase Oman's rich heritage in an interactive and engaging way.
The event features a variety of experiences for visitors: 'Abq Al Turath' Heritage Village, where artisans demonstrate traditional crafts, including live net-weaving, pottery and ship modelling; folk dances and music performances highlighting Oman's coastal heritage.
Children's entertainment zones with games, competitions and popular cartoon characters, Family-friendly theatrical and cultural shows, giving visitors a chance to immerse themselves in local traditions while enjoying modern entertainment.
The festival has also introduced upgraded infrastructure, including expanded green spaces, shaded rest areas and parking for over 300 vehicles, ensuring a smooth experience for all attendees.
Visitors have expressed admiration for the festival's unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Ranaad bint Yahya Al Marjabiyah, a local visitor, shared her excitement: 'I was surprised by the beauty of Al Ashkharah and the organisation of the festival. The heritage village was a highlight for me — it brings Omani culture to life in such an interactive and enjoyable way'.
Abdullah bin Ahmed Shaikh Belhadj, a tourist from Algeria, echoed the sentiment: 'The festival exceeded my expectations. I was impressed by the variety of cultural activities and the professionalism of the organisation. Experiencing Omani heritage firsthand was unforgettable and the pleasant summer weather made it even more enjoyable'.
For Salim bin Ali Al Sinaidy from the Wilayat of Ibra, the festival represents a perfect fusion of past and present. 'Ajwaa Al Ashkharah offers a modern take on traditional Omani life, which makes it enjoyable for the whole family. Watching artisans create fishing nets and other crafts was both educational and inspiring'.
Organised in collaboration with government and private partners, the festival is part of Al Sharqiyah South Governorate's broader efforts to boost local tourism and community engagement.
According to festival organisers, the event has also created around 90 temporary jobs, offering young Omanis opportunities to gain experience in event management, hospitality and tourism services.
With a strong start, organisers expect attendance to surge during the upcoming weekend and holiday periods, potentially surpassing previous editions. The combination of cultural exhibitions, live performances and family entertainment is solidifying Ajwaa Al Ashkharah as one of Oman's must-visit summer events.
As the festival continues to grow year after year, it stands as a model of community-driven cultural tourism, where heritage is not only preserved but also celebrated in ways that resonate with younger generations and international visitors alike.

He highlighted that the publishing house is a key supporter of Omani writers. He added that the idea of establishing the library was to empower Omani writers to have a presence on regional and international stages. Adel Metwally, a representative from Egypt's 'Boursat Al Kotob' (Book Exchange) publishing house, confirmed their continuous participation in the Khareef Dhofar Book Fair since 2015. He explained that this year's participation focuses on displaying Omani books, particularly those on history, as well as supporting young Omani writers and providing children's and scientific books. Ibri sees tourism boom as GCC travellers transit to Dhofar
Ibri – The wilayat of Ibri in Dhahirah governorate is experiencing a noticeable rise in tourist and commercial activity during the months of July and August, driven largely by its strategic location as a transit point for travellers from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries heading to Dhofar by road. This seasonal movement has led to a sharp increase in demand for accommodation, with many hotels and rest houses in Ibri reporting occupancy rates between 85% and 100%, according to Ali bin Khamis al Sudairy, Assistant Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Dhahirah. 'The governorate is witnessing significant hotel sector activity during the khareef season, which reflects growing interest from travellers using Ibri as a stopover en route to Dhofar,' said Sudairy. By the end of July 2025, the number of licensed hotels and accommodation facilities in Dhahirah had reached 55, up from 48 at the end of 2024—representing a 14.5% growth. The figure is expected to rise further by the end of the year, he added. Sudairy highlighted the strategic importance of the Rub al Khali border crossing, which links Oman to Saudi Arabia. He said the route has boosted land-based tourism and opened up investment opportunities along the corridor. 'New facilities such as fuel stations, express service centres, hotels and rest houses are contributing to the economic vitality of the governorate,' he said. Ibri's markets, malls, restaurants, cafés and other commercial establishments are also witnessing increased footfall during this period. Sudairy noted that the uptick in economic activity is creating both seasonal and long-term job opportunities for Omani youth across several sectors.

Salalah – As part of the khareef season 2025, Dhofar Municipality has launched the Literary Cultural Street—a key cultural attraction located within Attin Square in Salalah. Designed to spotlight the rich literary and artistic heritage of the governorate, the initiative blends interactive events with a festive atmosphere that appeals to diverse audiences. The Cultural Street features a wide range of activities, including musical performances, poetry readings, live storytelling sessions, visual arts displays, and the popular interactive event known as 'The Postman'. The space also hosts an impressive display of books and cultural publications through the participation of 27 publishing houses and libraries from across the Gulf and Arab world. Salem bin Mohammed al Yafei, Director of Literary Cultural Street and Chairman of the Dhofar Autumn Book Fair 2025, said that the exhibition has become a cornerstone of the autumn season's cultural programming. This year, Attin Square was selected as the venue due to its central location and high visitor traffic. He noted that the accompanying cultural events are designed to deepen public engagement and broaden cultural awareness. Among the exhibitors is Bayn Al-Sotor Publishing House, participating for the fourth consecutive year.
