
Why AI Is Ending The Era Of The End User
I was first introduced to the limitations of 'end user' thinking a decade ago when I managed the rollout of an oil & gas exploration toolset. I expected clear processes and defined user roles. Instead, I found the corporate Wild West: geoscientists and engineers working in open-ended collaboration. There were no playbooks, just expert judgment and debate.
Trying to reducing those interactions to 'end user' terms missed the complexity that made the work succeed. Today, that same mistake is being made as AI reshapes the labor landscape. In AI-driven environments, data, expertise, and curiosity combine to shape critical decisions. Calling someone an 'end user' of AI doesn't just sound outdated; it misrepresents our responsibility to direct (and more importantly challenge) the outcomes of intelligent systems.
So let's talk about why this language is holding us back and how to move beyond it.
Where 'End User' Came From and Why It Stuck
The term 'end user' was born from 1960s systems engineering, where it described non-technical staff operating finalized tools. It marked the final point of waterfall-style system design: processes (and value) flowed one way, with 'end users' at the end of the flow as passive recipients.
Forty years later, Agile software development methodology updated this framing with the 'user story' format: As a [role], I want [function]. While this appears to be a more nuanced understanding of how a tool is used, the 'roles' in this sense generally refer to software license types and security groups, not organizational roles.
From a technology perspective, this makes standardization across environments easier, improving supportability and scalability. The unintended result however is that the actual people who use the tool are often missing from design conversations. Modern technology is not built for the people using it. The people are fit into the technology.
As the co-founder of a change firm that explicitly bridges the gap between technology partners and their clients, I am perhaps especially sensitive to this dynamic. While our consultants have a variety of methods to bring these perspectives together, I am keenly aware that the gap (and the risk for clients) is widening with the introduction of AI.
Because humans are so accustomed to adapting to technology, the greatest danger of AI is our likelihood to trust it blindly. We have never worked in a space where the outputs of our tools carry the risk of such blatant errors and hallucinations.
Research shows humans are prone to automation bias, the tendency to over-trust automated systems even when they're proven wrong. Recent incidents, from lawyers submitting briefs with fabricated case law to employees publishing unverified AI outputs, underscore how this bias results in real damage.
With AI, interacting with technology can no longer be a passive activity. We cannot approach AI as a tool we are simply using; we must remember we're collaborating with intelligent systems. Our decisions don't just shape the quality of work, they determine the outcomes themselves. We must understand where accountability starts and ends with AI.
Microsoft's idea of calling humans 'agent bosses' who manage AI like junior employees gets part of this right. But it still defines people via their relationship to the tool, not their responsibility for decisions. As AI systems become more modular and agent-based, authority, visibility, and accountability will fragment across organizations. Labels like 'end user' or 'agent boss' don't just oversimplify this, they erase it.
5 Ways to Rethink End Users in the Age of AI
We need to move away from grouping stakeholders into a single bucket (no matter the name) and towards a more nuanced and informed understanding of how they will interact with each other. Here are five things organizations can do to mitigate the dangers of irresponsible AI usage:
The term 'end user' belongs to an earlier era of linear systems and passive tools. Today, people are not just recipients of data and outputs. Our shared success depends on remembering that humans are no longer endpoints; we're the ones steering the system.
To move confidently into this new future, we must name roles with precision, embed accountability into design, and foster active oversight at every level. AI will not replace judgment and critical thinking, but it will amplify the consequences of neglecting it.

Meta names ChatGPT co-creator as chief scientist of Superintelligence Lab

"In this role, Shengjia will set the research agenda and scientific direction for our new lab working directly with me and Alex," Zuckerberg wrote in a Threads post, referring to Meta's Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who Zuckerberg hired from startup Scale AI when Meta took a big stake in it. Zhao, a former research scientist at OpenAI, co-created ChatGPT, GPT-4 and several of OpenAI's mini models, including 4.1 and o3. He is among several researchers who have moved from OpenAI to Meta in recent weeks, part of a broader talent arms race as Zuckerberg aggressively hires from rivals to close the gap in advanced AI. Meta has been offering some of Silicon Valley's most lucrative pay packages and striking startup deals to attract top researchers, a strategy that follows the underwhelming performance of its Llama 4 model. Meta launched the Superintelligence Lab recently to consolidate work on its Llama models and long‑term artificial general intelligence ambitions. Zhao is a co-founder of the lab, according to the Threads post, which operates separately from FAIR, Meta's established AI research division led by deep learning pioneer Yann LeCun. Zuckerberg has said Meta aims to build 'full general intelligence' and release its work as open source — a strategy that has drawn both praise and concern within the AI community.

Meta names Shengjia Zhao as chief scientist of AI superintelligence unit
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Friday that former OpenAI researcher Shengjia Zhao will lead research efforts at the company's new AI unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Zhao contributed to several of OpenAI's largest breakthroughs, including ChatGPT, GPT-4, and the company's first AI reasoning model, o1. 'I'm excited to share that Shengjia Zhao will be the Chief Scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs,' Zuckerberg said in a post on Threads Friday. 'Shengjia co-founded the new lab and has been our lead scientist from day one. Now that our recruiting is going well and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalize his leadership role.' Zhao will set a research agenda for MSL under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI who was recently hired to lead the new unit. Wang, who does not have a research background, was viewed as a somewhat unconventional choice to lead an AI lab. The addition of Zhao, who is a reputable research leader known for developing frontier AI models, rounds out the leadership team. To further fill out the unit, Meta has hired several high-level researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Safe Superintelligence, Apple, and Anthropic, as well as pulling researchers from Meta's existing Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab and generative AI unit. Zuckerberg notes in his post that Zhao has pioneered several breakthroughs, including a 'new scaling paradigm.' The Meta CEO is likely referencing Zhao's work on OpenAI's reasoning model, o1, in which he is listed as a foundational contributor alongside OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Meta currently doesn't offer a competitor to o1, so AI reasoning models are a key area of focus for MSL. The Information reported in June that Zhao would be joining Meta Superintelligence Labs, alongside three other influential OpenAI researchers — Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren. Meta has also recruited Trapit Bansal, another OpenAI researcher who worked on AI reasoning models with Zhao, as well as three employees from OpenAI's Zurich office who worked on multimodality. Zuckerberg has gone to great lengths to set MSL up for success. The Meta CEO has been on a recruiting spree to staff up his AI superintelligence lab, which has entailed sending personal emails to researchers and inviting prospects to his Lake Tahoe estate. Meta has reportedly offered some researchers eight- and nine-figure compensation packages, some of which are 'exploding offers' that expire in a matter of days. Meta has also upped its investment in cloud computing infrastructure, which should help MSL conduct the massive training runs required to create competitive frontier AI models. By 2026, Zhao and MSL's researchers should have access to Meta's 1 gigawatt cloud computing cluster, Prometheus, located in Ohio. Once online, Meta will be one of the first technology companies with an AI training cluster of Prometheus' size — 1 gigawatt is enough energy to power more than 750,000 homes. That should help Meta conduct the massive training runs required to create frontier AI models. With the addition of Zhao, Meta now has two chief AI scientists, including Yann LeCun, the leader of Meta's FAIR lab. Unlike MSL, FAIR is designed to focus on long-term AI research — techniques that may be used five to 10 years from now. How exactly Meta's three AI units will work together remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Meta now seems to have a formidable AI leadership team to compete with OpenAI and Google. NC-based app uses AI to fight denied health insurance claims
A new app developed in North Carolina is using artificial intelligence to fight denied health insurance claims.
