Somerset's Rebhan, Stevens are the Dade 3A-1A Softball Pitcher, Player of the Year

Miami Herald08-06-2025
Taylor Rebhan and Ava Stevens had waited for such a moment since they began playing for the Somerset Silver Palms softball team in middle school.
After coming up short at state each of the past two seasons, they Stallions left no doubt this year on their way to their first ever state championship.
'Every year we got so close and finally actually did it,' said Rebhan, a junior shortstop and University of Louisville commit.
Rebhan and Stevens were each key to the triumph as they have been to building one of the best programs in the state over the past few years.
Rebhan with her excellent glove at shortstop and prolific hitting at the plate, and Stevens with dominant performances in the pitching circle.
And so, Rebhan and Stevens are once again the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Softball Player and Pitcher of the Year for Classes 3A-1A.
Rebhan is the 3A-1A Player of the Year after another stellar hitting season in which she hit .430 with five home runs, seven doubles, four triples and compiled 24 RBI.
Stevens is the 3A-1A Pitcher of the Year after going 17-4 with 97 strikeouts in 144 innings pitched. She also hit .400 and scored 34 runs while driving in 15 more.
Stevens made more of an emphasis on becoming the most dominant pitcher she could entering her sophomore season and accomplished the goal with clutch performances throughout the postseason.
'My approach to failing improved. I'm used to hitting good every year, but this year I didn't hit as well,' Stevens said. 'But my pitching was most important. I handled it better. Just adjusting to knowing I had to do my job pitching and my team will pick me up was important.'
Stevens is likely to be offered by multiple Division-I schools once schools can after September 1.
Rebhan has the tools to be one of the next great players to come from South Florida and showed it again this season.
But things didn't start so well for the Stallions overall.
Somerset Silver Palms lost three of its first five games before an eight-game winning streak put it back on course toward a state title.
'The beginning started rough. I don't think, in the beginning, we had the confidence we could make it this far,' Stevens said. 'We felt like we're not this bad and we have to show that these teams we were playing aren't on the same level we are.'
With Stevens and Rebhan set to return next season along with several other players from a core which has been together for the past three years, Somerset's state title could only be the first in a sustained run of success.
'We've all been playing together since we were in sixth or seventh grade,' Rebhan said. 'We all know each other and how are mindsets work. So to finally win this together was great. We know we can beat any team together. We just have to come in with the mentality that we can lose to anyone, but we can beat anyone.'

Aaron Judge injury update: Yankees star undergoes testing for 'elbow issue'

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge is out of the lineup on Saturday, July 26 and underwent testing on what manager Aaron Boone called a right "elbow issue." Judge leads the majors with a .342 average and .711 slugging percentage, ranks second with 37 home runs and 85 RBI entering Saturday and is the favorite to win his third American League MVP award. "Obviously concerned but we'll wait and see as they read the imaging," Boone told reporters, adding that Judge couldn't throw very well during Friday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees had a seven-game lead in the AL East on May 30 but have struggled for the past two months, entering Saturday trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 5 ½ games for the division lead. Judge was the Yankees' primary center fielder last season with Juan Soto in the Bronx, but he moved back to right field in 2025. Ryan McMahon, acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies, makes his Yankees debut starting at third base on Saturday. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. MLB Insider Links Astros To Trade For $8 Million Slugger At Deadline

The Houston Astros have quietly placed themselves at the top of the league after losing Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman in the offseason. The team has also been missing Yordan Alvarez for a good chunk of the year. It doesn't seem like Houston's success is sustainable with its current roster. The front office is going to need to make a big trade or two in the coming days in order to secure the division down the stretch. FanSided's MLB insider Robert Murray recently suggested the Astros would look to add offense at the trade deadline and linked them to a trade for Baltimore Orioles slugger Ryan O'Hearn. CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 23: Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles hits an RBI sacrifice fly ball during the fourth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on July 23, 2025 in Cleveland,... CLEVELAND, OHIO - JULY 23: Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles hits an RBI sacrifice fly ball during the fourth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on July 23, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. More"The Houston Astros are prioritizing offense at the trade deadline, and one fit is Baltimore Orioles All-Star slugger Ryan O'Hearn," Murray wrote. "O'Hearn, 31, is having the best season of his career ahead of free agency, hitting .281/.375/.452 with 12 home runs and 37 RBI. After (Josh) Naylor was traded to the Mariners, O'Hearn is the best remaining first baseman on the market. He also has the ability to play the outfield, appearing in 16 games in right field this season for Baltimore." O'Hearn would be the perfect addition for the Astros. He can slot in at first base alongside Christian Walker in order to give the veteran some time off the field. O'Hearn can also play the outfield when Alvarez returns, but for the time being, he would be the perfect designated hitter in Houston. Adding him shouldn't cost the Astros an arm and a leg either. They should be able to part ways with a mid-level prospect or two in order to acquire him, though there's bound to be some competition to add the slugger. Either way, Houston is the dream landing spot for O'Hearn this year. More MLB: Mets Reunion? Why Latest Trade Rumors Make Perfect Sense For New York
