Why Amazon's massive retail business is no longer enough

Why Amazon's massive retail business is no longer enough

Mint3 days ago
Amazon's retail business is raining profits these days. But that alone won't cut it in the age of artificial intelligence.
The company's generally strong second-quarter report late Thursday was marred by what was considered a disappointing showing by its Amazon Web Services cloud-computing business. AWS revenue grew 17% from a year earlier to about $30.9 billion, which was largely flat with the growth rate shown the previous quarter and merely in line with Wall Street's projections. That came after rivals Microsoft and Alphabet's Google reported accelerating growth in their own cloud units for the same period.
When pressed about AWS growth on the company's earnings call, Amazon Chief Executive Andy Jassy noted that 'we have a meaningfully larger business in the AWS segment than others." He is right—to an extent. Microsoft said Wednesday that its Azure cloud-computing arm just surpassed $75 billion in annual revenue, which is about 36% below the $116 billion AWS is currently generating.
But Azure doesn't include all of Microsoft's cloud offerings, or even all of its efforts in generative AI services such as Copilot. Microsoft said Wednesday that revenue for its total Microsoft Cloud business increased 27% year over year to $46.7 billion for the June quarter. And that was a sharp acceleration of 7 percentage points from the growth reported for the March quarter. Microsoft's shares rose nearly 4% Thursday after its report. Amazon's stock was down more than 6% in after-hours trading after its results.
The irony is that the relative weakness in Amazon's cloud business comes as the company's retail side is humming. The online stores division—which reflects the products Amazon sells itself over its website—saw sales jump 11% year over year to $61.5 billion. That is the best growth rate for that unit since early 2021 when Amazon was still benefiting from a Covid-19-induced online shopping spree. North American operating income that reflects the bulk of Amazon's retail business hit $7.5 billion—34% ahead of Wall Street's projections. And that comes in a quarter clouded by questions about tariffs and the health of consumer spending.
Still, given what Amazon, Microsoft and Google are spending to build up generative AI capabilities, trends in their respective cloud-computing arms are watched closely for signs of a return on that investment. And those amounts are getting even more staggering. Amazon said Thursday its cash capital expenditures of $31.4 billion in the second quarter are 'reasonably representative" of what it will spend in the next two periods, which would bring the year's total to about $118 billion.
That is nearly double what Amazon averaged over the previous five years, which included a massive step up in investments in the company's order-fulfillment network. And that isn't cheap even for a company that now sells $670 billion of goods and services annually. Amazon's free cash flow is expected to slip 6% this year despite a projected 9% increase in sales, according to consensus estimates from Visible Alpha.
Amazon's big-spending, Big Tech rivals are in the same boat. But Microsoft, Google and Meta Platforms gave investors plenty of good news in their latest reports that softened the blow of those big bills. If Amazon is going to sell its AI vision, it will need AWS to pack a bigger punch.

Satya Nadella's BIG move, Microsoft stops 30-year-old practice and drops Apple, IBM, Meta, NVIDIA from its list of…

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Microsoft has moved from its 30 years old tradition and stopped identifying individual competitors in its annual regulatory filings. They had this practice and had maintained it for decades. The tech giant's 2024 annual report, released Wednesday of 101 pages but does not mention any of its historical adversaries like Apple or IBM, nor does it name new rivals like Anthropic or Databricks. What Was Microsoft's Tradition? In last year's report, Microsoft officially listed over 25 companies as competitors and which was part of the pattern they were following since 1994. However the new report states that Microsoft faces competition across markets like productivity software, PC operating systems, and cloud infrastructure. According to a CNBC report, citing sources the change shows a shift toward categorizing competition by sector rather than by company, aligning with the fast-paced nature of the tech industry. How Apple, Meta, Nvidia Mention Their Rivals? While Microsoft has opted for vagueness, many peers continue to identify their rivals by name. Apple, Meta, and Nvidia still follow the industry norm but they have also moved big names from it. Amazon hasn't named competitors since 1999, Tesla stopped in 2020, and Alphabet dropped the practice in 2022. But Microsoft executives haven't stopped acknowledging rivals altogether. CEO Satya Nadella referenced Amazon during the company's earnings call this week. And in May, Microsoft Cloud and AI head Scott Guthrie indirectly called out AWS for lagging behind in advanced GPU systems, noting that some providers 'still haven't launched a GB200 offering,' a nod to Nvidia's powerful NVL72 systems.

Should Indians travel to Vietnam to buy a cheaper MacBook? We did the maths

Buying a MacBook in Vietnam could be so much cheaper than in India that the savings could pay for your trip. This idea gained traction after an Indian man reported buying a MacBook for roughly ₹1.48 lakh after a refund, saving about ₹37,000 compared to the Indian price. This saving is enough to cover a budget trip to Vietnam, he claimed. So, instead of just buying a laptop locally, he travelled to a new country and enjoyed a holiday with his purchase. However, while this approach seems appealing, there are finer details to consider. MacBooks in Vietnam are cheaper than India but your trip may not end up being free.(AFP) 'Free Trip' Breakdown Before booking tickets, understand that the "free trip" concept relies on very strict budgeting. The widely reported trip was a budget one, which isn't for everyone. The man's ~ ₹4,000 for 11 days stay (about ₹350 per night) suggests a hostel. If you're not comfortable sharing a room, a decent hotel in Hanoi will cost at least ₹2,500 per night, significantly increasing the cost. A 10-day hotel stay alone would be ₹25,000. Budget flights are another factor. A return trip from New Delhi to Hanoi might be advertised for about ₹20,000, but there's a catch. These fares often exclude checked baggage. Exceeding the typical 7 kg cabin limit can lead to hefty fees, easily pushing you to spend more. Food can also be a challenge, especially for vegetarians. While vegetarian food is available in Southeast Asia, it can be rare and more expensive than non-vegetarian street food. This might limit you to pricier restaurants, further increasing your trip's cost. Finally, consider the significant discounts available in India. On Amazon, a MacBook M4 Pro listed for ₹1.83 lakh can have over ₹9,000 in card discounts, bringing the total saving to about ₹25,000 off the MRP. Similarly, the base M4 Pro model can see discounts of about ₹20,000. With local discounts of ₹20,000 to ₹30,000, the Vietnam plan becomes less compelling. Let's Compare The Costs A comfortable 10-day trip, budgeting for hotels ( ₹25,000), flights with baggage ( ₹25,000), food/activities ( ₹20,000), and a visa (about ₹2,200), would cost approximately ₹70,000. Add the ₹1.48 lakh MacBook, and the total comes to over ₹2.20 lakh. Note: Apple sells the MacBook Pro M4 Pro for 49.089.000đ in Vietnam, which works to around ₹1.64 lakh. You may have to look for discounts. In contrast, a tight budget trip might cost around ₹40,000 ( ₹19,000 for basic flights, ₹5,000 for hostels, ₹10,000 for food/activities, plus visa). The total with the MacBook Pro (M4 Pro chip) would be about ₹1,88,000. This is often still more expensive than buying the same MacBook with available discounts in India. Ultimately, it's your call. If you are happy to spend a little more to include a trip to Vietnam with your purchase, it could be a worthwhile experience. But, it isn't going to be exactly 'free,' especially if you are not comfortable doing a budget, backpacker-style trip. Amazon backs India as next global AGI powerhouse with Rs 1,11,000 crore AI push

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is making one of its biggest moves in India yet, with a fresh Rs 1.11 lakh crore ($12.7 billion) investment aimed at turning the country into a key global centre for artificial general intelligence (AGI). The investment, which will run through 2030, focuses on expanding cloud infrastructure and preparing the ground for next-generation AI plan includes building advanced data centres, improving networking systems, and setting up powerful computing resources that can support large-scale AI projects. According to a report by Business Standard, AWS believes India's fast-growing developer base and startup culture offer the right environment to support such ambitious Sivasubramanian, vice president at AWS for Agentic AI, recently visited India and spoke about the scale of this push. He said the world is seeing a big shift in what AI can do, and setting up the right infrastructure is crucial to keep up. 'You need all these investments in computer infra to power those future developments in a big way,' he said. This move comes as competition in the global AI space heats up, especially between the United States and China. By backing India with a major capital infusion, AWS appears to be supporting the idea of India becoming the third big force in the AI also praised India's tech talent. 'The Indian developer community is one of the most vibrant,' he said, adding that developers here are eager to learn and adopt new Rs 1.11 lakh crore commitment adds to AWS's existing operations in India, which already include two cloud regions in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The company has been present in India since 2016 and has already trained over 4 million people in cloud skills, helping to build a strong tech says its upcoming AI tools like Amazon Q Business, Bedrock, and SageMaker will help more Indian businesses and government bodies use generative AI. The company also plans to launch AWS Marketplace in India by the end of 2025, which could make software buying for businesses easier—similar to the impact UPI had on digital from supporting AI development, the investment is expected to boost the Indian economy. A part of this investment, which is $8.3 billion allocated for Maharashtra, is projected to create over 81,000 full-time jobs every year and add around $15 billion to India's GDP by 2030.- Ends
