Asean backs fair free trade as it moves forward with US tariff talks, says Thai minister
BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): "Asean reaffirms its stance, uniting to tackle global economic challenges and seize US tariff relief for constructive talks."
Thailand's Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said this on Sunday following his participation in the Asean Ministerial Caucus, held alongside the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting in Jeju, South Korea.
He was joined by economic ministers from Asean member states within APEC, including Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei.
Pichai explained that the meeting had discussed the volatile global economic landscape, exchanging strategies for regional trade cooperation and strengthening relations with the United States amid global economic uncertainties.
"Asean also reaffirms its collective commitment to supporting an open, fair and rules-based free trade system, while urging the avoidance of protectionist measures," he stated.
"Asean also sees the 90-day suspension of US tariff measures as an opportunity to initiate constructive negotiations to resolve trade disputes."
Pichai further elaborated that Asean ministers agreed that regional unity and a timely response to global economic fluctuations are crucial factors in maintaining Asean's prominent role on the global stage.
The bloc will accelerate proactive cooperation, such as modernising the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) to align with the contemporary economic landscape while emphasising the importance of a multilateral trade system in ensuring long-term economic stability.
Pichai also highlighted Thai government's commitment to maintaining domestic economic stability while supporting businesses affected by international developments, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are considered vulnerable.
The government has introduced short- and long-term measures such as low-interest loans, knowledge development programmes, and export market expansion under free trade agreements (FTAs), with a particular focus on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
Currently, Asean is the world's fifth-largest economic bloc, with a population of approximately 680 million people (8.5% of the global population) and a combined nominal GDP of around US$3.9 trillion (129.31 trillion baht). - The Nation Thailand/ANN

BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira on Thursday (July 31) provided an update on the ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, revealing that Thailand had submitted its final draft of the tariff proposal. He expects to receive an unofficial response on the matter later this evening, ahead of the critical August 1, 2025 deadline. 'We've been working on this since early this morning, maintaining continuous communication with the US. We've addressed their feedback from yesterday and are now fine-tuning the details. It's a delicate matter, but we're doing our best. While it's challenging, I'm confident we will receive good news tonight,' said Pichai. He explained that while the result would not be officially confirmed tonight, it would serve as a signal that the uncertainties are diminishing, providing Thailand with clearer direction for planning its economy for the second half of the year. Pichai emphasised that the proposal was not based on concessions from Thailand alone, but rather the result of careful and comprehensive negotiations that aimed at a "win-win" situation for both countries. Thai media groups suspend ties with Cambodian journalists over ethics row
BANGKOK: Three major Thai media organisations have suspended relations with their Cambodian counterparts and issued a strongly-worded rebuttal to accusations of unethical reporting on the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict. The Thai Journalists Association (TJA), the Society for Online News Providers (SONP) and the National Union of Journalists Thailand (NUJT) jointly responded to statements from the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ) that accused Thai media of lacking ethics in their coverage of the border dispute. Rejecting ethics accusations The Thai organisations categorically rejected what they described as defamatory information about Thai media and expressed "extreme dissatisfaction" with the CCJ's statement accusing Thai journalists of unethical reporting practices. "This constitutes contempt that cannot be accepted," the joint statement declared, describing the Cambodian accusations as an unacceptable insult to Thai media professionalism. Three key demands The Thai media groups issued three specific demands to their Cambodian counterparts: 1. Suspension of relations Due to what they characterised as the CCJ's role as a "mouthpiece for the Cambodian government rather than functioning as an independent professional organisation," the Thai Journalists Association announced it was temporarily suspending its memorandum of understanding with the CCJ. The association, which had previously maintained cooperative relations with the CCJ aimed at using media relationships to foster mutual understanding between both nations' peoples, said the suspension would remain in place "until the situation returns to normal." The joint statement represents an escalation in tensions between media organisations in both countries, mirroring the broader diplomatic and military dispute along their shared border.
