Two Scottish cities named among world's top spots for exploring on foot
Edinburgh and Glasgow have been included in a top 100 global list by travel platform GuruWalk, thanks to their architecture, culture, and interesting and historical routes.
When it comes to exploring a city, nothing beats discovering it on foot. While open-top bus tours have their charm, the real magic lies in wandering down side streets, past hidden gems and through centuries of history that vehicles can't reach.
Walking not only gives you a closer look but keeps your step count high and your wallet happy.
Travel platform GuruWalk, which connects tourists with local guides offering free walking tours, compiled the list from March 2024 to April 2025, based on page views and booking trends across its global platform.
Edinburgh maintained its impressive 19th-place finish from last year, thanks to its captivating mix of history, architecture and atmosphere.
GuruWalk said: 'Edinburgh enchants with its blend of medieval architecture and contemporary atmosphere. From the Castle to the Royal Mile, the city invites you to explore it at a leisurely pace. Every corner here feels magical!'
Visitors to the capital can take part in free themed walks, including ghosts and mysteries of the Royal Mile, a Mary Queen of Scots tour, a Harry Potter-themed route and even a Trainspotting-inspired walk through Leith.
Further down the list, Glasgow secured 91st place, continuing to charm with its cultural buzz and striking architecture. GuruWalk said: 'Glasgow is renowned for its lively arts, music and cultural scene.
"Strolling through its streets means discovering impressive Victorian buildings, contemporary galleries and an ever-changing culinary scene that reflects its young and dynamic spirit.'
Guided walks in the city include tours along the River Clyde, the old Tollbooth, Buchanan Street, Glasgow Cathedral, and routes exploring the city's darker secrets.
London also made the cut, with GuruWalk praising its mix of past and present. They said: 'With an unrivalled combination of history and modernity, London fascinates travellers from all over the world with places such as Buckingham Palace, Camden Town and Soho, which are ideal for exploring at a leisurely pace on foot.'
Topping the list this year was Rome, followed closely by Budapest and Madrid. GuruWalk said: 'Rome tops this ranking once again. The Eternal City remains a key destination for travellers fascinated by ancient history.

"The Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Baroque squares make Rome an open-air museum that deserves to be explored thoroughly, step by step.'
On Budapest, they added: 'Known as the 'Pearl of the Danube', Budapest blends imperial architecture with a vibrant cultural scene. The Parliament, the Fisherman's Bastion and the thermal baths are some of the best places to discover on foot.'
And about Madrid, they wrote: 'The Spanish capital offers the perfect combination of art, urban life and iconic parks. Strolling through its streets from the Plaza Mayor to the Retiro is like diving into a lively city full of surprises.'

Donald Trump arrives in Scotland as President greeted at Prestwick Airport
The President was to be greeted by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray as he stepped off the Air Force One flight. Donald Trump has arrived at Prestwick Airport ahead of his four-day "private" trip in Scotland. The US President was to be greeted by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray after the Air Force One flight touched down at around 8.28pm on Friday. The Republican leader will now head from the airport to spend time at his luxury Turnberry Hotel and golf resort, which is 35 miles further south. Trump is expected to meet Keir Starmer in South Ayrshire in the coming days before they then both travel to Aberdeenshire, where the President will formally open a new golf course at his Menie Estate. Murray said yesterday the UK will extend a "warm welcome" to the president, given the historic ties between the two countries. "Of course it's a warm welcome,' he said. "We would always have a warm welcome for the president of the United States. "The office of the president of the United States and the office of the Prime Minister are ones that work very, very closely together, and should do, because it's in our national interest to do so. 'We should make sure those relationships are in place because it's important for our defence, our security, our economy – especially for jobs – and it's really, really important to the finer details of the US trade deal that's been done.' Murray's comments come despite a 2019 motion in the House of Commons which he backed – along with Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Health Secretary Wes Streeting – while in opposition which accused the president of 'misogynism, racism and xenophobia'. Pressed on his support for the motion, Murray did not answer, instead focusing on the importance of the relationship between the two countries. Murray said the Scottish Secretary has a 'duty' to welcome foreign dignitaries. Speaking to reporters before he began his travel to Scotland today, the US president described his Turnberry golf course as 'the number one course in the world'. Trump said he was going to have dinner at Turnberry with Starmer and 'then we're going to go to the oil capital of Europe, which is Aberdeen'. He added: 'We're going to have a good time. I think the Prime Minister and I get along very well.' Trump will also meet with John Swinney during his time in Scotland. Asked about meeting with the First Minister, President Trump said he has a 'lot of love' for Scotland. He added: ' The Scottish leader is a good man, so I look forward to meeting him.' Trump also indicated he and Sir Keir Starmer could 'approve' the US-UK trade deal when they meet in Scotland. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Protests are expected in parts of Scotland during the visit, with police expected to be stretched and requests for extra officers being issued to other forces in the UK. The Scottish Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said policing will be 'seriously affected'.

The Scottish island walk that was named country's 'best hike' by experts
The Daily Record is back with another Walk of the Week. For the latest edition of our regular series, which highlights Scotland's best hikes and beauty spots, we are heading to the Hebrides. Ben More is the highest mountain—and only Munro—on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. It is also the highest peak in the Scottish Isles aside from those on the Isle of Skye. The Munro was previously named the "best hike in Scotland" by Much Better Adventures. It topped the experts' country-wide list, triumphing over beauty spots such as the Uath Lochans in the Cairngorms and Ben Nevis. According to Much Better Adventures, Ben More is a moderate-to-challenging hike. This makes it ideal for those looking for more of a challenge as we approach the end of summer. The walk is approximately six miles in length, and should take between six and seven hours to complete. It starts from and finishes at the Ben More Car Park. From the car park, the route is "fairly apparent" according to the experts. Climbers will pass by streams, rock pools, and waterfalls as they make their way up Ben More, as well as "the ruins of some ancient houses". While the walk up to the top isn't easy, the views will be well worth it. On a clear day, the vistas stretch all across Mull. Much Better Adventures wrote: "The island of Mull is easily accessed on the ferry from Oban, and it's an island made for adventure. Follow the rolling roads—ideal for cycling—over to the west coast of the island, which is particularly scenic, with Loch Na Keal (a sea loch) providing a beautiful combination of Atlantic coastal beauty and Highland mountain drama. "The biggest mountain of all here in Ben More. At 966m (3,169ft), it's the only Munro on Mull, and indeed, the only Munro on any Scottish island that isn't Skye. It's also a beauty of a walk—and on a sunny day, it's not overly demanding, and provides sensational views from the summit over all of Mull and out to Ulva, the majesty of Staffa, Lunga and the Treshnish Isles beyond." See below for some photographs that showcase why Ben More is a great hiking destination. Meanwhile, the full list of the 26 "best hikes in Scotland" can be found on the Much Better Adventures website. Heathrow evacuated amid reports of fire at massive London airport
The airport has responded to concerns on social media and confirmed the evacuation. British holidaymakers have been evacuated from Heathrow Airport following reports of a fire. Travellers in Terminal Three were told to exit the airport, throwing queues of people about to embark on their summer holidays into chaos. The baggage claim has been closed as staff respond to the alarm. Heathrow is the largest airport in Europe, with more than 200,000 passengers passing through every day. The Airport has responded to concerns on social media and confirmed the evacuation. They said: "While the fire service investigate a fire alarm, some areas of Terminal 3 have been temporarily evacuated." Heathrow Airport has also apologised for any disruption caused by the evacuation, reports the Mirror. A spokesperson for the airport said 'Following an earlier fire alarm evacuation in parts of Terminal 3, the incident has now been stood down. We apologise for any disruption caused to journeys.' Travellers have addressed the chaos that has erupted at the airport. One person wrote on social media: "Border shut down been waiting here forever. "Why is there not a contingency plan for a situation like this? We can't stay here forever." Another commented: "Fire alarm in baggage claim which is where we exit from passport control. All sealed off for now." Holidaymakers reported being in a standstill as an alarm went off earlier near the baggage claim. One passenger said: "What the hell is going on, this is impossible, you've got everyone, kids, disabled people, crew all just waiting. "Border control is not processing anyone, they're must be at least 10 flights that have landed and is just waiting here. No announcements, no one knows what's going on."
