What is the Edgar Berlanga vs Hamzah Sheeraz fight purse and is there a rematch clause?

The Sun12-07-2025
BRITISH talent Hamzah Sheeraz has one eye on a potential world title shot when he goes punch-for-punch with American star Edgar Berlanga - and the other eye will be on his bank account.
Sheeraz, 26, narrowly missed out on becoming the new WBC champion, having drawn with Carlos Adames in February.

While Berlanga bounced back from his 2024 Canelo Alvarez loss in emphatic fashion by landing a first-round knockout on Jonathan Gonzalez earlier this year.
But the one thing that both boxers would have had in common is seeing an increase in their bank balance.
And the middleweight duo are expected to have another nice payday once the dust has settled from their headline clash.
What is the Berlanga vs Sheeraz fight purse?
The official figures for Saturday night's main event are yet to be disclosed.
But reports suggest that Edgar Berlanga took home a total of around £7.3millon ($10m) in sponsorship and pay-per-view.
So the American is expected to take home something similar while Sheeraz will potentially get less.
Famous boxing chronicler Dan Rafael claimed that Berlanga's manager, Keith Connolly, would have secured an eight-figure package for his client.
But that is unlikely, taking into consideration his previous paydays of a reported $800k for the fight with Padraig McCrory and around $700k for his bust-up with Roamer Alexis Angulo.

Is there a rematch clause?
It has not been confirmed whether a rematch clause has been inserted into the contract.
However, it is unlikely as the winner is expected to earn a shot at the world title for their next encounter.
When is Berlanga vs Sheeraz?
Edgar Berlanga vs Hamzah Sheeraz will take place THIS Saturday, July 12.
Ring-walks for the main event is expected to get underway at 2:55am BST / 9:55pm ET meaning that the first bell should go approximately 15 minutes later at 3:10am BST / 10:10pm ET.
However, timings could change depending on the length of the undercard bouts.
Coverage of the card will start from 11pm BST / 6pm ET.
The Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York is the chosen venue for this huge event.
Berlanga vs Sheeraz full card
Fans are most looking forward to Berlanga's brawl with Sheeraz.
But before that, Shakur Stevenson will meet the undefeated William Zepeda in the co-main.

Lennox Lewis fires back at claims he ducked rematch with Vitali Klitschko

Lennox Lewis has hit out at critics who have claimed that he avoided a rematch with Vitali Klitschko. Lewis was accused by a fan on social media of ducking a second fight with the Ukrainian great and opting to retire instead. But in a lengthy response on Wednesday evening (23 July), Lewis explained why he chose to walk away from the sport. Lewis said: 'Let me clear this up for you. Vitali was always supposed to be my last fight, but it got moved up. I took it on 10 days' notice. No champ has ever taken on a #1 contender on such short notice.' After seriously considering a rematch, Lewis decided his aspirations of starting a family and living a life not dictated by boxing were too tempting to resist, he said. Lewis added: 'I looked forward to the moment of starting a family and no more camps. I seriously considered a rematch but, in the end, decided to go with the original plan.' Their initial encounter in 2003 was halted by the referee at the end of round six after Lewis opened up a deep cut over the eye of the Ukrainian. The consensus was that Klitschko was leading at the time. Lewis retired as lineal and WBC champion in 2004 after much speculation surrounding Klitschko and a rematch. This left the title vacant for the Ukrainian to claim and begin his dominant reign as champion. He received criticism, but Lewis retired on his terms and at the very top of the sport, which very few fighters get to do. The former undisputed champion gave Klitschko credit for being a stellar champion and admitted that he was aware of his age disadvantage in a rematch, as he turned 38 in 2004. He concluded: 'Vitali went on to be a great champion in his own right. I was also aware that Father Time was not in my corner.'

Oleksandr Usyk ordered to defend WBO heavyweight title against Joseph Parker

Oleksandr Usyk has been ordered by the World Boxing Organisation to defend his heavyweight world title against Joseph Parker. Saturday's spectacular knockout of Daniel Dubois in front of more than 80,000 people at Wembley ensured the Ukrainian was crowned undisputed world champion once again. Both parties have 30 days to agree terms or the WBO will proceed to a purse bid. Parker, the former world champion, is on a five-fight winning streak, including impressive wins over the former WBC world champion Deontay Wilder, Martin Bakole and Zhilei Zhang. Parker's impressive performances had earned him his first chance to win a world title in seven years against Dubois in February. However, Dubois withdrew because of an infection two days before the bout. Instead, Parker fought Bakole, winning with a second-round KO. The fight against Dubois was not rescheduled and the British fighter then signed to fight Usyk, leaving Parker waiting even longer for his world title opportunity. Parker's scintillating form has been much aided by his coach Andy Lee, who has also helped Hamzah Sheeraz and Ben Whittaker earn breakthrough stoppage victories against Edgar Berlanga and Liam Cameron respectively. Usyk, the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO champion, mentioned the possibility of defending his titles against Parker on Saturday, with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua being other possibilities. Oleksandr Usyk's next opponent lined up days after Dubois victory

Oleksandr Usyk has been officially ordered by the WBO to face Joseph Parker, his mandatory challenger, for the heavyweight title. The WBO issued a statement on Thursday, 24 July, giving both parties 30 days to negotiate an agreement before proceeding to a purse bid. Usyk regained his undisputed heavyweight status by defeating Daniel Dubois for the second time on Saturday, 19 July, at Wembley Stadium. Joseph Parker secured his WBO interim title by knocking out Martin Bakole in February, following the cancellation of his bout with Dubois. Usyk has the option to relinquish the WBO title to avoid the fight, a strategy he previously employed by giving up the IBF title to facilitate his rematch with Tyson Fury.
