Ancelotti-favourite Real Madrid star will start vs Barcelona after overcoming injury

Yahoo25-04-2025
Real Madrid will lock horns with Barcelona tomorrow night in Seville with the Copa del Rey trophy on the line.
Having been beaten by the Blaugrana twice already this season, Carlo Ancelotti & co. will be eager to exact a measure of revenge and get their hands on a third trophy this season.
Boost for Real Madrid as Ferland Mendy set to start
Heading into the game, Real Madrid have been handed a boost as MARCA reports that Ferland Mendy will start at left-back in Saturday's Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

The French left-back has proven in recent training sessions that he has fully recovered from the injury sustained in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid.
Following the match against Getafe, Mendy participated in the last two training sessions without issue, confirming his fitness.
As a result, manager Ancelotti has opted to include him in the starting eleven for the high-stakes clash at Estadio de La Cartuja.

Ancelotti values Mendy's experience in major fixtures over what Fran Garcia might bring in what would be his first significant appearance as a starter.

Throughout the season, the Italian coach has consistently shown greater trust in Mendy than in the academy product.
The initial plan had been to deploy Eduardo Camavinga at left-back. However, the injury he suffered in Getafe has ruled him out for the final and the remainder of the season.
While Ancelotti considered his options, Mendy's strong return in training has made him the clear choice.
Meanwhile, Federico Valverde is set to start at right-back, with Antonio Rudiger and Raul Asensio expected to form the central defensive pairing.
The main tactical uncertainty lies in whether Ancelotti will stick with his usual setup, typically involving four attacking players, or opt for a more conservative approach with four midfielders.

Real Madrid not planning to sell two players this summer

Real Madrid are focusing on sales, given that their four signings so far have ensured that the first team quota of 25 players is full. There are a number of players that have been linked with moves in recent weeks, but a couple of those have now been cooled. Real Madrid are said to be interested in adding a new midfielder to Xabi Alonso's squad before the end of the summer, although that can only happen if someone leaves. Fran Garcia and Rodrygo Goes have both been linked with exits, but given the area of the pitch, it is perhaps more likely that a pivot leaves. Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde are guarantees, so neither will leave. In regards to Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos, their situation is more open, but according to Cadena SER, neither player is planned to leave this summer. Of the two, Ceballos has been most linked with a move. He will be behind the aforementioned three in the pecking order, as well as a new midfielder if one joins. And in recent weeks, he has been linked with a return to Real Betis. Image via Diario Sport Real Betis react to Dani Ceballos interest On this matter, Betis president Angel Haro recently spoke, but he made it clear (via Marca) that a deal would only be possible on their terms. 'Betis does not close the door to any player and even less to those who have played here before. The players simply have to enter into economic parameters, there is work behind the sporting quality of the players. 'It is not a matter of closing. I already said the issue of Dani, he had the opportunity two years ago when the negotiation was between two parties, now there are three, that complicates it a lot and Betis are not going to pay a big transfer for Dani because it would not make sense.' It remains to be seen how the situation with Ceballos plays out, but like this Camavinga, Real Madrid are not actively looking to sell.

Barcelona star's departure set to take ‘longer than expected'

The departure of an out-of-favour member of the first-team ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona is not progressing at the speed which the club had hoped. That's according to , who point towards Iñaki Peña as the player in question. Peña is for his part fresh off something of a difficult campaign in Catalunya's capital in 2024/25. Thrust into a surprisingly prominent role owing to the long-term injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen, the 26-year-old, for the most part, went on to impress in Hansi Flick's XI. Before long, however, Peña was forced to watch on from the bench once more, as free agent signing Wojciech Szczęsny usurped the Spaniard in the Blaugrana goalkeeper pecking order. With Szczęsny having since been rewarded by way of a two-year contract extension, and Joan García's arrival from Espanyol long confirmed, it has in turn come as no great surprise to hear of Peña eyeing a new challenge. As alluded to above, however, if the latest word stemming from the Spanish media is anything to go by, then Peña's exit is unlikely to be confirmed any time soon… As per a report from MD: 'Iñaki Peña knows he's not in Flick's plans and that the best course of action is to move on. However, the offers he's received don't meet his expectations, and although he's open to negotiations, the deal could take longer than expected.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Barcelona to miss out on 30% of fee for upcoming player sale

La Liga giants Barcelona will receive only 70% of the total fee from their incoming sale of Pau Víctor. That's according to journalist Nil Solà of SER, who has on Wednesday provided an insight into the situation. The name of frontman Víctor has of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya's capital across the day to date. This comes after confirmation was forthcoming that, somewhat out of the blue, the 23-year-old is on the verge of a move to Portugal with SC Braga. Surplus to requirements in Hansi Flick's squad following the arrival of Marcus Rashford, the Barcelona board showed little hesitation in giving the green light to Víctor's sale. The figures landed upon in negotiations with Braga, it is understood, are a base fee of €12 million, and a further €3 million in bonuses. As alluded to above, though, the entirety of this sum will not land in the accounts at the Spotify Camp Nou. As per a report from the aforementioned Nil Solà: 'Girona have a 30% share of Pau Víctor's sale in this summer transfer market. Girona had agreed on 50% in the first transfer window and now have 30%.' Conor Laird – GSFN
